Flying Snail

Freedom of expression and freedom of speech aren't really important unless they're heard...It's hard for me to stay silent when I keep hearing that peace is only attainable through war. And there's nothing more scary than watching ignorance in action. So I dedicated this Emmy to all the people who feel compelled to speak out and not afraid to speak to power and won't shut up and refuse to be silenced. - Tommy Smothers

Dear Tinkers,

I need your help to accelerate some information (I have verified) within the physics and seismology communities.

My friend Randall created the VolksMeter, which is a gravitational-pendulum type seismograph that is fully digital.

It does not suffer from low frequency sensitivity loss that is customary with network type instruments, including even the fine instruments built by Gunar Streckeisen with influence from the well-known Erhard Wielandt.

On January 23, 2009 Dr. Sheng-Chiang Lee and Dr. Randall Peters submitted a paper titled, "A New Look at an Old Tool - the Cumulative Spectral Power of Fast-Fourier Transform Analysis":

"As an old and widely used tool, it is still possible to find new insights and applications from Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based analyses. The FFT is frequently used to generate the Power Spectral Density (PSD) function, by squaring the spectral components that have been corrected for influence from the instrument that generated the data. Although better than a raw-data spectrum, by removing influence of the instrument transfer function, the PSD is still of limited value for time varying signals with noise, due to the very nature of the Fourier transform. The authors present here another way to treat the FFT data, namely the Cumulative Spectral Power (CSP), as a promising means to overcome some of these limitations. As will be seen from the examples provided, the CSP holds promise in a variety of different fields."

The original description of this paper is located here, and I have restructured it in html format here.

"CSP is a powerful new approach to studying [seismic] frequency domain, because it allows one to overlay multiple plots at different times on the same graph-to see the spectral evolution.

We in physics found out a long time ago that frequency domain information is usually much better than being restrained to the time domain in trying to understand a lot of systems. Trying to do similar overlays with power spectral density (PSD) or plain spectra from the FFT meets with too much clutter to be useful."

Sheng-Chaing and Randall's work sparked my interest enough to pry into what they were explaining; and, as a result, I augmented their research by creating animated cumulative spectral power (CSP) plots.

I immediately noticed there was a relationship with something I am interested in, "Eigenmode seismic triggers" [similar to heart node signals] that is based on some Strings related Yantra experiments which are not quite accepted, yet, by some key players in the scientific community.

Explaining eigenmodes is somewhat difficult. Here is a general idea of what I am talking about:

Eigenmodes of a square plate

The above video is a nice depiction of how the eigenmodes of a plate change with increasing forcing frequency.

ARPSN Seismic FFT-CSP Comparison animations are currently painting an interesting picture. More animations are listed on the ARPSN page.

I am contributing free work to this project because of the possibility it may lead to an early seismic detection warning system, which could be used to save lives.... so, my dear Tinkers, please take a look at the research data and forward where there may be interest. Thank You, ~@~

The World Is Not Flat

Recently there was a large earthquake in the Tonga region. While trying to cover the event live, via dial-up, our phone lines went down for almost nineteen hours. This is a catch-up on that event as 'perceived' [recorded] by VolksMeter sensors; but first, a reminder of something I believe:

There are some things that need seriously to be clarified concerning theory of seismometers, since there is so much confusion; not only among amateur seismologists, but also even many professional geoscientists.

Ultimately, the ONLY source of seismograph excitation (no matter the instrument design) is ENERGY. Additionally, the ONLY thing that delivers energy to the seismometer is Earth's ACCELERATION at the site of the instrument. This is true not only for the instrument's response to earthquake waves whose periods are shorter than about 300 s, but also for earth 'hum' in which the instrument responds mainly to tilt, when the periods are greater than about 300 to 1000 s. - Dr. Randall D. Peters - http://physics.mercer.edu/

Seismic Microseism Surfing - 17 March 2009

The above spectrum of microseism amplitude modulation time records are band passed at 0.137 Hz (using the most narrow possible 32-pole filter).

The 0.137 corresponds to the peak of the March 17, 2009 microseism spread, both at Cobb [Mountain], CA and Redwood City, CA.

"The 'coming and going' of microseisms at this frequency is not random, as you can see from the spectrum of the 'rectified' signal after removing the 0.137 Hz carrier ripple (using exponential smoothing).

The 25 min. and 23 min. are probably eigenmode frequencies, which suggest ocean waves responsible for the microseisms are being modulated by the Earth's free oscillations." - Randall Peters

Earthquake Swarm

Earthquake swarms are events where a local area experiences sequences of many earthquakes striking in a relatively short period of time. The length of time used to define the swarm itself varies, but the United States Geological Survey points out that an event may be on the order of days, weeks, or months.[1] They are differentiated from earthquakes succeeded by a series of aftershocks by the observation that no single earthquake in the sequence is obviously the main shock. Earthquake swarms are one of the events typically preceding eruptions of volcanoes.

One example is along the Cerro Prieto fault near Mexicali, BC in Mexico where over 500 quakes and aftershocks hit in February, 2008.[2] Another is a swarm that's been dubbed "The Mogul earthquake sequence" that began in February 2008 near Reno, Nevada and continued for several months, ending in November 2008.[3] Between February and April the swarm produced more than 1,000 quakes of small magnitude, although the largest measured 4.7. - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An episode of stronger tremor at the volcano was in progress when the seismic signal from a M5.4 earthquake near Kodiak Island passed through the Redoubt area causing the tremor amplitude to appear to increase quickly.

The higher the sample rate, the less information in the CSP about the low frequency spectral components. This is because the CSP represents, for a specified value of the period, the amount of power starting at the Nyquist period (reciprocal of one-half the sample rate) up to that period value. So I've generated the attachment, using the Redwood City, CA PSN data, but saving for the record only every 10th data point.

Notice that the 24 hour record separates into three distinct branches: (i) the group at the start of the record that is elevated at long periods (broadly distributed branch), but contains little short period power, (ii) the group during the earthquake that is elevated at the start (sharply distributed at shorter periods), and with pretty much the same broadly distributed total power during the event as at the start, and (iii) the group at the end that is sharply distributed and everywhere lower power than the previous two groups.

We thought it might be fun to share some of the data collected by the Macon, Georgia VolksMeter IIs.

[Notes: As previously indicated, to see the features of the Georgia, USA earthquake M3.1 event, one has to use 10 sps data. Moreover, the CSP 'bogs down' if the duration at that rate is too long. So I did a 50 minute record straddling the earthquake (actually two, you see a small aftershock).

What's interesting are the several steps corresponding to different (high) frequencies characterizing the event. No doubt the local geology plays a part in the enhancement of various high frequency pieces, similar to what the larger Cobb mountain plots do by resonant enhancement of lower frequencies involving teleseisms. - Randall Peters - Examples are located in the 2009 April Archive. ~@~]

Maggie's Farm by Bob Dylan
[The Electric Version]

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more. No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more. Well, I wake in the morning, Fold my hands and pray for rain. I got a head full of ideas That are drivin' me insane. It's a shame the way she makes me scrub the floor. I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more. No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more. Well, he hands you a nickel, He hands you a dime, He asks you with a grin If you're havin' a good time, Then he fines you every time you slam the door. I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more. No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more. Well, he puts his cigar Out in your face just for kicks. His bedroom window It is made out of bricks. The National Guard stands around his door. Ah, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more. No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more. Well, she talks to all the servants About man and God and law. Everybody says She's the brains behind pa. She's sixty-eight, but she says she's twenty-four. I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more. No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more. Well, I try my best To be just like I am, But everybody wants you To be just like them. They say sing while you slave and I just get bored. I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

"Mr Businessman, you can't dress like me"
http://www.quotablequips.com/worklife-balance/

Ok, so this isn't an often quoted quote, but I really like it. If you don't recognize it, Jimi Hendrix sings it in his song "If 6 Was 9". And this is the reason I like it:

I think a lot of people are being pulled in two directions: one is in the direction of how they want to think and act, the other is in the direction of how they are told to think and act. For example, I have always had a fairly casual demeanor - I don't like to take things too seriously unless they really require it. Now in the area of work and school, this has caused me no end of problems, because they want to pull me in the direction of being "professional", or in other words, non-casual. So I have these conflicting forces: one is inside of me, telling me to act not necessarily casually, but appropriate to the situation (which often is casual, because I don't believe everything requires my full attention). The other force is from outside of me, which tells me to be "professional" or to "work hard". One force is the self, the other is the world.

I believe this polarity between self and world that I feel within myself is visible in all levels of life, not just in the individual. For example, art often centers around the "self", whereas business is centered around the "world". A good artist needs to go hard into exploring what their true self is, and disregard what the world says about that. Without a true self to express, their art would lack substance: after all, art is just a medium, not a message (thanks Steve Pavlina for clearing that one up). On the other hand, business (at least in the way most people think of business: going to work for a boss, trying to work up the corporate ladder etc) is all about the world. The same is true of the defense force, politics, and anything else that is worldly. You must adapt your true self to what is going on around you. Going hardcore into exploring your true self will do you no flavors, rather, you must know on a deep level what attributes your organization desires, and apply yourself as best you can to internalize those attributes.

Now, the reason I write this blog is because I notice a lot of people in current society are trying to get the best of both worlds. They want to put up with being a corporate ass-kisser 9-5 Monday to Friday in order that they can make money, money which allows them to be their "true selves" in their time off. I see these people at music festivals, concerts, galleries - anything which they can go to in order to feel like they are not ACTUALLY a corporate ladder-climber. They will discard their corporate identity for the weekend like a rag and dress in ways which completely depart from that world. Often, they are drawn to the world of the artist, the beatnik, the hippy... the world of the "true self". So we have guys like Jimi Hendrix, doing his thing and not worrying about the corporate bullshit world, then he sees these guys from that world all of a sudden trying to dress like him and be like him. So that they can get the best of both worlds: they can be rich like the fat cats, but authentic like the artists. It is at this point that Jimi says, "Mr Businessman, you can't dress like me". He knows that their attempt to be like him is pathetic, it is weak. It is inauthentic. It is also a slap in the face to the artists: "I can devote massive hours during the week to becoming a corporate slave, but during the weekend I can be just like you, even though you have to devote your whole life to your craft." And that is how a lot of people are living these days, including a lot of "artists". No wonder music is so shit these days.

"If 6 Was 9" by Jimi Hendrix

(yeah, sing a song bro...) If the sun refused to shine I don't mind, I don't mind (yeah) If the mountains ah, fell in the sea Let it be, it ain't me. (well, all right)

Got my own world to live through and uh, ha ! And I ain't gonna copy you.

Yeah (sing the song brother...) Now if uh, six uh, huh, turned out to be nine Oh I don't mind, I don't mind uh ( well all right... ) If all the hippies cut off all their hair Oh I don't care, oh I don't care.

Dig, cause I've got my own world to live through and uh, huh And I ain't gonna copy you.

White collar conservative flashing down the street Pointing their plastic finger at me, ha ! They're hoping soon my kind will drop and die but uh I'm gonna wave my freak flag high, high ! Oww ! Wave on, wave on...

Ah, ha, ha Fall mountains, just don't fall on me Go ahead on mister business man, you cant dress like me Yeah !

Don't nobody know what I'm talking about I've got my own life to live I'm the one that's gonna die when it's time for me to die So let me live my life the way I want to... Yeah, sing on brother, play on drummer...

Presentazione della nuova edizione del libro "Le parole e la lotta armata", un libro fondamentale per ridefinire la memoria storica dei movimenti in una nuova edizione completamente rivista e aggiornata

Intervengono Ermanno Gallo, Ada Negroni e Oreste Scalzone.

Remembering Marla Ruzicka

To have a job where you can make things better for people? That's a blessing. Why would I do anything else? - Marla Ruzicka

Marla Ruzicka (December 31, 1976 -- April 16, 2005) was an activist-turned-aid worker. She believed that combatant governments had a legal and moral responsibility to compensate the families of civilians killed or injured in military conflicts. She and her Iraqi translator, Faiz Ali Salim, were killed by a suicide car bombing on Airport Road in Baghdad on April 16, 2005.

In 2003, Ruzicka founded the Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict (CIVIC), an organization that counted civilian casualties and assisted Iraqi victims of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.

Born in Lakeport, California, Ruzicka attended Long Island University's Friends World Program, and spent four years traveling throughout Costa Rica, Kenya, Cuba, Israel/Palestine, and Zimbabwe. After graduating in 1999, Ruzicka volunteered for the San Francisco-based organizations Rainforest Action Network and Global Exchange. [Continue Reading]

Mount Konocti - Mike Wilhelm - Sprung Springer
Protecting the 'breathing mountain'

Written by James BlueWolf

Mt. Konocti, the “breathing mountain,” appears to be up for grabs.

It is, of course, not a “thing” that can be simply bought and sold – though humans pretend it to be so. Original inhabitants recognized it as a “relative” – like a grandfather or grandmother – imposing and worthy of respect beyond the usual sacred place that needs its space and solitude to fulfill its responsibilities to the earth.

Its nature and attributes, responses and communications may not easily be perceived but that does not mean they are not occurring. As with any living being, any kind of manipulation or domination implies unintended consequences.

There are other places in the world that we recognize as sacred – Bethlehem, Mecca, Bear Butte, Everest, Stonehenge, Nani Waya. Each of these places has its special recognition, protections and agreements for preservation. Each has inspired people to expound upon its “sacred quality.”

But people often talk out of both sides of their mouths. Take Everest for example. Every guide and climber that has ever gone there has felt its power and been willing to acknowledge its “sacred quality.” Yet the mountain of trash they have left there in their personal quests to “conquer it” belies their good intentions and exposes their first commitment – to themselves.

Domination has been the theme of western society. Using horses as an example – they perceive the horse’s agreement to be ridden (often achieved by a forceful coercion) to be an indication of human superiority when it is instead a simple collaborative agreement. Each species shares itself with the earth.

The mountain has chosen its co-inhabitants through time. Human beings may have a reason to go there – but that reason is best known by the native peoples who have a long relationship and communication with it. They know the restrictions and circumstances that govern the mountain’s relationship with humanity.

Before additional discussions occur to discuss acceptable uses and inevitable abuses are held, native people need to come together to formulate a proposal representing the needs of the mountain. The purposes of humanity have enough spokesmen.

Just because we can “open” the mountain does not mean we should. What is the nature of this compulsion to put our footprint upon all of creation?

My own opinion is that the mountain is like a spiritual leader and needs space and solitude to represent creation for all life forms. My wife says it more simply: Opening it to the public “is a bad idea!”

Oh, I hope that I see you again I never even caught your name As you looked through my window pane -- So I'm writing this message today I'm thinking that you'll have a way Of hearing the notes in my tune -- Where are you going? Where have you been? I can imagine other worlds you have seen -- Beautiful faces and music so serene -- So I do hope I see you again My universal citizen You went as quickly as you came -- You know the power Your love is right You have good reason To stay out of sight -- But break our illusions and help us Be the light - "Message" by Michael Pinder
