Soul band The Drifters have been involved in a serious car crash on the M1 in South Yorkshire.

The accident happened near Rotherham in the early hours of Monday when the band's car hit another vehicle that had crashed after swerving to avoid a deer.

One member of the band - Patrick Alan - suffered head injuries and is being treated at Rotherham hospital.

The other three band members - Peter Lamarr, Victor Bynoe and Rohan Turney - escaped with less serious injuries.

The Drifters were originally formed in 1953 and had dozens of hits in the US and UK throughout the subseqent three decades.

Among their best-known songs is 1964's Under the Boardwalk.

The group has undergone multiple line-up changes, including Ben E King in the late 1950s and again in the mid 1980s.

Lamarr, Bynoe and Turney were released after treatment and have continued their journey to London following a performance at Newcastle's Tyne Theatre on Sunday night.

Their driver suffered cuts to his hand and was treated for a chest injury.

Extensive damage

The other driver, a 21-year-old man from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, suffered airbag injuries and whiplash.

However, he got out of his vehicle to the safety of the hard shoulder before the band's Chrysler Voyager people carrier smashed into his stationary Skoda at about 70mph.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged, South Yorkshire Police said.

Pc John Scruby of the Road Policing Group attended at the scene of the collision, said " It is quite astonishing that we were not dealing with a fatal collision given the nature of the incident."

Pessimism growing among Iraqis

A new survey paints a pessimistic picture of Iraqis' confidence in their own government and in coalition forces.

Only 18% of Iraqis have confidence in US and coalition troops, while opinion is almost evenly split on whether to have confidence in Iraq's government.

About 86% of those questioned expressed concern about someone in their household being a victim of violence.

More than 2,000 people were polled, which was commissioned by the BBC, ABC News, ARD German TV and USA Today.

The survey was conducted by D3 Systems.

The latest findings contrast strongly with the outlook among Iraqis in 2005, when respondents to a similar survey were generally hopeful about the future.

Asked whether they thought reconstruction efforts in Iraq had been effective, some 67% said they felt they had not.

Religious divide

The poll paints a picture of an increasingly polarised Iraq, with acutely diverging views between Sunnis and Shias - Sunnis appearing more pessimistic.

Pessimism is most keenly felt across central Iraq, including Baghdad, where Sunnis are most numerous.

Religious differences are particularly displayed in attitudes towards the execution of Saddam Hussein.

Sunnis questioned largely regarded the manner of the former Iraqi leader's death as inappropriate and unlikely to help the cause of reconciliation; Shias predominantly took the opposite view.
No one however wanted Iraq divided along sectarian lines.

Bush has blown up the world. Now the onus is on Democrats to say how they would put it back together. Nice move.

I say, resist and tell it like it is. The war and the domestic crisis are the messes that Georgie made. Here are the steps I suggest to remedy this terrible situation.

1. Tell the people that George Bush and his friends are killers, liars, and thieves and that not only shouldn't they listen to him and them, but that they all belong in jail.

2. Get George and his friends out of the way -impeach, or if no time, wait till election-then put them in prison where they belong. No more reason to be afraid of what they say, calling opposition 'cut-and-run' Democrats. Let them say it from prison and see if they can 'cut-and-run' from behind bars.

3. Get the people he deployed to the disaster out of the disaster.

4. Rebuild the US first. Rebuild the schools, roads, infrastructure, housing, education system, medical insurance and other needs neglected by the Republicans over the last eight years, as they went on their killing spree and spent all of our money.

5. After cooling the Republicans by arresting most of them and shutting their stupid mouths forever, start working on reversing Global Warming.

6. Revoke all the tax cuts made by the criminal Bush clan.

7. Remove all the "Justices" put in place by the Bush clan, including on the Supreme Court.

8. Abolish all the bullshit programs put in place by Bush clan, including Medicaid "reform" and the provisions attached to the 'no-child-left-behind' scam. Surely Bush was left behind.

9. Consider the possibility that the Republican ideology contravenes the Constitution because its policies and beliefs endanger the well-being of the people. Consider making the Republican Party illegal.

10. Start a party that opposes the Democratic Party from the left of the Democratic Party and makes the Republican Party a detestable relic of the past akin to the slave-holding Southern rebels.

Soon after his comments, government sources revealed the secret identity of his wife to US media.

Ms Plame said she had always been aware that her identity might have been discovered by foreign governments but never expected her own to leak her role.

"It was a terrible irony that administration officials were the ones who destroyed my cover," Ms Plame told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A California woman with an inoperable brain tumor may not smoke marijuana to ease her pain even though California voters have approved its medicinal use, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Wednesday.

In a much-watched test case, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found there is no fundamental right to marijuana for medical purposes. The ruling agreed with a 2005 U.S. Supreme Court decision.

The split three-judge opinion from Judge Harry Pregerson expressed sympathy for some arguments by plaintiff Angel Raich, 41, an Oakland resident whose doctor testified she could die if she stopped smoking pot. But the ruling backed the 1970 federal Controlled Substances Act barring marijuana.

Raich, who suffers from many ailments, says marijuana keeps her alive by easing pain and bolstering appetite.

"Today I found out I am basically a dead man walking," Raich, who once worked as an accountant and massage therapist, told Reuters. "Today the court said I don't have the constitutional right to basically stay alive."

The mother of two said U.S. officials had never moved to arrest her or bar her from using marijuana and said she would continue to do so every two hours. "I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't," she said.

Raich said she would lobby Congress in Washington to change U.S. law. The court said use of the drug for medical purposes was gaining support but federal law still banned it. Please continue reading at:

Let me see if I've got this straight. Perhaps two years ago, an "informal" meeting of "veterans" of the 1980s Iran-Contra scandal - holding positions in the Bush administration - was convened by Deputy National Security Advisor Elliott Abrams. Discussed were the "lessons learned" from that labyrinthine, secret, and illegal arms-for-money-for-arms deal involving the Israelis, the Iranians, the Saudis, and the Contras of Nicaragua, among others - and meant to evade the Boland Amendment, a congressionally passed attempt to outlaw Reagan administration assistance to the anti-communist Contras. In terms of getting around Congress, the Iran-Contra vets concluded, the complex operation had been a success - and would have worked far better if the CIA and the military had been kept out of the loop and the whole thing had been run out of the Vice President's office. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - The campaign headquarters of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards was evacuated Wednesday after a staff member opened a letter containing white powder, a campaign official said.

"The health and safety of our staff and volunteers is obviously our paramount concern, so we contacted the authorities," said Jonathan Prince, deputy campaign manager. "The authorities have asked us to evacuate while they run tests on the substance, and we have done so."

Campaign spokeswoman Kate Bedingfield declined to provide other details about the letter. Chapel Hill police, who were investigating, didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

HONOLULU - A 16-year-old girl who caught a cold during a school trip to New York was kicked off her flight home because she was coughing.

Rachel Collier was removed from the Continental Airlines plane as it was about to leave Newark, N.J., for Honolulu earlier this week. She had fallen asleep after boarding the plane with about three dozen classmates and woke up coughing and gasping for breath as it was about to take off.

"Everyone was looking at me," she said. "I couldn't talk because I lost my voice coughing so much. I was panicking."

The flight attendants gave her water, and a doctor on the flight said she would be OK to make the 10-hour flight. But the captain returned the aircraft to the gate to drop off the girl and one of her teachers.

Rachel said she started crying when the captain told her to leave. She and the teacher finally made it home the next day.

Teacher Maile Kawamura, a chaperone for the spring break trip to New York and Washington, D.C., said she was shocked. The two didn't know what to do or where to stay, she said. They finally found accommodations in New York and bought clothes and toiletries.

Continental said in a statement that Collier was coughing "uncontrollably" on the plane Tuesday and that "the captain felt he was acting in the best interest of the passenger and other passengers on the flight."

Rachel's mother, Stephanie Collier, said Continental has agreed to reimburse her daughter's expenses incurred during the extra day, including the cost of the hotel."

I felt it was really extreme for a coughing fit," she said. "We've all had coughing fits."

Texas Teen's Imprisonment Sparks Protests

AUSTIN, March 28 -- Civil rights activists are rallying around a 15-year-old black girl who has been in a high-security juvenile detention center for a year for shoving a hall monitor at her school and whose sentence was just extended for what authorities call possession of contraband: an extra pair of socks and a plastic foam cup.

One of 4,562 juveniles in the Texas Youth Commission's custody, Shaquanda Cotton may have remained incarcerated in obscurity, fretted over by her mother and a handful of supporters in her home town of Paris, in northeast Texas near the Oklahoma border. But a Chicago Tribune article has prompted an inquiry by the Rev. Al Sharpton and spurred several hundred protesters to travel this week from Dallas to the courthouse where Cotton was convicted. Internet message boards and blogs have been flooded with postings crying "Free Shaquanda Cotton!"

Almost every bit of information in the Cotton case is in dispute -- from the allegation that on Sept. 30, 2005, Shaquanda shoved a 58-year-old white teacher's aide acting as a hall monitor to whether her mother was offered the opportunity keep the teenager at home under the less-onerous option of probation.

Her mother, Creola; the state NAACP; local African American activists and a few white lawyers in Paris contend that the girl and her mother are victims of a discriminatory school system.

They say that the Cottons have been targeted by the Paris school district because of Creola's involvement in a group that complained to the U.S. Department of Education about discrimination against black students. A spokesman for the Education Department said it is investigating whether the district discriminated during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 school years "in the administration of its discipline policies."

Cotton and her supports also say a white judge who gave a white 14-year-old girl probation after she was convicted of burning down her family's home treated Shaquanda unfairly.

Representatives of the Paris school district and the criminal justice system adamantly dispute the allegations. Lamar County Judge Chuck Superville, who sentenced Cotton and the arsonist, was not available for comment. But a spokesman for the Lamar County district attorney's office addressed questions.

"This girl was adjudicated delinquent by a jury . . . on assault of a public servant," Allan Hubbard said about Shaquanda. "She pushed the teacher down, and anyone who does that will continue to be prosecuted to the level of the law that is allowed under the Texas Family Code. It doesn't matter what color they are."

Hubbard said that Shaquanda was offered two years' probation if she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault, a plea deal that Creola Cotton refused because her daughter, who has no previous criminal history, said she did not shove or push the teacher's aide. Hubbard said that after a jury trial on the felony charge of assault on a public servant, the judge sentenced Shaquanda to a minimum of a year in a youth facility because the mother would not cooperate in establishing home-supervised probation.

Creola Cotton disputes that allegation. That issue is among several raised in the appeal of Shaquanda's conviction to the 6th Court of Appeals of Texas. "The judge sentenced her and he didn't have sufficient evidence to show there was not an alternative" to the youth facility, said Gary Waite, the attorney handling the girl's appeal. "The evidence was legally insufficient to establish that her mother couldn't provide the care and support to meet conditions of probation."

Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas chapter of the NAACP, called the circumstances of Shaquanda's incarceration "abominable."

"It's a clear miscarriage of justice. If you take the accusation, there is no way a colorblind court system would have allowed that situation to go forward," he said. "The facts don't justify the punishment. It is clearly excessive and has really harmed this young girl."

A spokesman for the Texas Youth Commission, an agency recently turned over to a conservator because of long-ignored allegations of sexual abuse of incarcerated juveniles by facility employees, said the extension of Cotton's sentence will be examined. Youth facility supervisors can extend a juvenile's sentence until he or she turns 21 for any number of infractions. About 45 percent of the more than 4,600 juveniles have received extended sentences in recent years. Allegations have been made that sentences were extended arbitrarily and to intimidate teenagers.

Although forbidden by law to comment on a specific juvenile, Youth Commission spokesman Jim Hurley said that "the publicly cited case of someone getting a term extended for having contraband which turned out to be an extra pair of socks is indescribable. It is beyond belief, if it is true, and we will have a panel reviewing each of these cases."

Freedom of information? Uncle Sam, get it right!

The Freedom of Information Act enables the public to obtain information from the federal government to ascertain, as stated by the Supreme Court, "what the government is up to." After all, a government shrouded in secrecy is not a government by the people and for the people.

With the coming of the electronic age, Congress enacted electronic-related amendments (E-FOIA) in 1997. These amendments required federal agencies to make available important records online, provide specific guidance to citizens on submitting information requests, and implement the technology necessary to post information proactively. The intent of E-FOIA was to increase public access to government information while at the same time reducing the burden created by FOIA requests.

All well and good, right? Wrong. A recent audit by the National Security Archive--an independent, nongovernmental research effort at George Washington University--paints a bleak picture of governmental noncompliance with E-FOIA a decade after its enactment.

Significant findings include the following:

• Only 21 percent of federal agencies post on their Web sites all four categories of records specifically required by the law (agency opinions/orders, statements of agency policy, frequently requested records and guidance to agency staff);

• A mere 6 percent of agencies post all 10 elements of essential FOIA guidance (where to send FOIA requests, fee status, fee waivers, expediting process, reply time, exemptions, administrative appeal rights, where to send appeals, judicial review rights, and an index of records/major information systems);

• Just 26 percent of agencies provide online forms for submitting FOIA requests; and

• Many agency Internet links are incorrect or missing.

This situation is unacceptable. Not only is it against the law as written 10 years ago, it also completely goes against the goal of freedom of access to government information.

Yes, it is true that certain government information deserves protection, such as when true national security is at stake, but that is why FOIA includes certain exemptions. Without a proper basis to invoke an exemption, government information should not be shielded from coming to light simply because the government has not seen fit to obey the law and enter the information age.

Even potential arguments of cost and burden fall by the wayside when this situation is analyzed properly. It is far less burdensome and costly for federal agencies to post basic and most frequently requested information online than to respond separately to many individual requests for the same information when that information cannot be accessed on agency Web sites.

While the National Security Archive audit highlights some chief offenders of E-FOIA, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (a Department of Homeland Security component) and the Air Force, the audit also compliments certain federal branches, such as NASA for proactively posting records of great interest to the public (like the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster) and the Department of Education for providing guidance and tools like online forms for FOIA requesters.

If NASA and the Department of Education can get it right, so should other federal agencies. It's not as if E-FOIA was just enacted yesterday. Ten years is plenty of time to come into compliance, and at the end of the fiscal year, compliance ultimately will reduce governmental FOIA burden and cost.
