Call for a Solution Energy Revolution:
A Special Message for the Younger Generation

In this speech, I depart from my usual professional restraint. I believe our dire situation calls for a much stronger expression.

Over the past 35 years I have researched both natural and breakthrough solutions for our sustainable survival. During the early years of my newly-found environmentalism, I became an advisor to presidential candidate Morris Udall and his U.S. House subcommittee on energy and the environment. We exposed the dangers of nuclear power and the merits of renewable energy and increased energy efficiency.

I was somewhat older then than you are now. I was idealistic and took to heart these warnings of the late great environmental thinkers I just quoted. They even inspired me to change careers at that time.

I'm sorry to say, things have only gotten much worse since then. I'm sorry to report that the state of the world you are inheriting is poised for utter destruction, largely because of the neglects of powerful people in my generation. Like a frog in a pot of water whose temperature is slightly raised every day until the water boils, our home planet is reaching the boiling point. I'm sorry we handed you such a mess.

The good news is, the solutions are there, waiting in the wings to bring forward now. The bad news is, they have been suppressed by the most destructive empire in world history.

For example, I have traveled the world and visited some of the most promising demonstrations of "solution" energy technologies that could provide us with a quantum leap in our ability to have clean, cheap and decentralized energy in the near future (e.g., vacuum energy, cold fusion and advanced hydrogen and water chemistries). I have also discovered that many of these courageous inventors have been isolated, threatened and sometimes assassinated.

By "solution energy", what we really mean is making wise choices from among a wide range of nonpolluting options--free of vested interests. I believe that breakthrough, or new, energy is by far our most promising solution energy. As a default, we should also consider the cleanest possible blend of traditional renewables, such as solar, wind, tides, waves and hydrogen fuels provided from these sources.

As my research deepened, thus revealing what we must do to sustain ourselves physically, so too our social, academic, political and economic organizations have solidified themselves into a resistance so strong, we cannot seem to get off the train that is hurtling towards sure disaster.

When ordinary, moral and innovative people weren't looking, our beloved republic-turned-protofascist-superpower has sunk into a morass of a criminal executive, a supine Congress, a corrupted judiciary, a bought-out media and an allowing public-- collectively bent on totalitarian genocide and ecocide rather than embracing true solutions.

We cannot, will not, allow this to happen any longer. The perpetrators must be removed from power. And the whole structure of our decayed system must be revitalized in positive directions. The U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights and international charters, conventions and treaties must be restored and re-invigorated.

In the U.S. we need a revolution, a nonviolent one. Citizens will need to hit the streets in large numbers demanding change. A new American Revolution has been long in coming, with warning signs coming from so many presidents and others for more than two centuries of a gathering storm that is reaching a climax now.

But how can we have a revolution if so few of us show up for it? On the fifth anniversary of 9/11, I spoke at a peace-and-truth rally in front of the White House. Barely thirty nonviolent demonstrators marched and gathered around the podium, while two snipers prowled across the White House roof. It was a nice day to come out, yet only one American in ten million joined our motley crew. Why so few? Do we care?

If this were Latin America, millions of people by now would be jamming Washington and banging pots on a constant vigil to demand the resignations of the president and his peers--until they leave. But not in the United States we have now. Whatever has happened to the kind of activism we have seen in the courageous leadership of a Patrick Henry or a Martin Luther King? In the absence of correct government behavior, the people have no choice but to take to the streets and stay there until we have the needed results.

Democracy is not a spectator sport. It can only die if we sit on the sidelines.

I am also astounded that President Eisenhower's 1961 warning about the severe consequences of the buildup of a military-industrial complex has gone unheeded. Now, almost fifty years later, this awesome power has become much further institutionalized and centralized into a hydra-headed beast opposed to all life on Earth--except for their own lives. Only we the people can remove this power and take control of our collective destiny.

But the crisis also presents opportunities we may have never imagined. First, though, we must clear the way by once again declaring our independence from King George and his cronies in power. We must impeach, remove, and convict them. We must throw their tea overboard if they don't slink away peacefully.

The reckless actions of the Bush administration are sealing the fate of an entire planet-- unless we have the courage to stand up and say "NO". It's our time to re-create our republic, it's our time to invite the world to join us in a new republic whose goals are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A peaceful, sustainable, just future.

Our top priority is to demand the resignations of BushCo, or that Congress should impeach the wrongdoers. Now. This is an essential first step towards restoring Constitutional government. All of us here should insist that impeachment be put back "on the table." Congress has not yet put it "on the table" because of their fears that the table which also supports their own careers might collapse from under them. What a rickety, corrupt "table" this is.

The only items now "on the table" are those that our dictators have piled up for us, a bill your generation will have to pay. Within this young century alone, that bill is greater than a trillion dollars more of weapons on Earth and planned for space, a trillion dollars more for illegal, immoral and preemptive wars in distant lands, a trillion dollars more for oil profits, a trillion dollars more in the pockets of cronies and speculators, a trillion dollars more of national debt, a trillion dollars more for the anti-Muslim lobbies, a trillion dollars more for the legal and illegal drug trade, and so on.

The new table we must take out of the closet is really a hearty old table that needs dusting off. It is the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, which have helped make our republic survive for this long. The Constitution is endangered by a tyranny so great, it is hard to imagine the consequences: the wanton environmental destruction, the unrestrained torture, the suspension of habeas corpus, the unprovoked wars of conquest and resource exploitation abroad; and the fixed elections and the potential for martial law and a police state dictatorship at home. Meanwhile, we only seem to hear imperial lies, lies and more lies, dutifully reported by a propagandistic media.

Our time calls for a number of systemic actions even beyond a cleaning out of those who have betrayed their oaths of office. It is a call for a restoration of proper vision.

Al Gore has recently given those of us in the industrialized world a mandate that he and many leading climate scientists feel will be necessary for our survival: act radically within ten years, leading to a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions of more than 90% by 2050. As an atmospheric scientist myself, I agree with that mandate, and I also believe that the solutions will come from outside the box of our retrogressive thinking.

But we need more: a restoration of truth in our public discourse. For only the truth can set us free from the tyranny that so imprisons us. We need to look squarely again at 9/11 truth, at depleted uranium truth, at war pretext truth, at torture truth, at electoral fraud truth, at solution energy truth, at UFO/ET truth, and all the other truths that our cancerous tyranny is trying to destroy.

And we will need to reconcile all these truths, which are as self-evident as they were when we declared our independence 232 years ago. We must eventually reconcile ourselves with ourselves and with the natural world. We Americans must apologize to the rest of the world for our aggressions and neglects.

As an elder American citizen, I owe you two apologies--generational and global--for the transgressions committed by some of my peers.

We can set goals, cajole governments and create NGOs geared towards peace, sustainability and justice. But we can never get close to achieving those goals by these modest approaches alone. The imperial system with its war machine can overwhelm the efforts of even the best-intentioned individuals and groups.

Our activism needs to go beyond our own parochial issues, which are based more on personal recognition, careers, advancement and the temptations of money. Albert Einstein said, "Try to become not a man of success, but try rather to become a man of value." This becomes ever evident as we organize ourselves and move into our higher collective purpose.

Our movements have become anemic, divided and conquered. We will need to ally our movements and declare those values that cut across all ethnic and interest groups, values that ring so true we cannot help but come on board. Values such as peace, sustainability, justice, freedom and equality for all.

But to achieve all this, we must go beyond declaring our independence from King George. We must declare our interdependence with each other and with all of nature in the global village. We must declare ourselves a sovereign world community comprised of an alliance of movements of various ethnic and religious identities who have a common and abiding interest in survival and good health. We must force our governments to serve us, not the other way around.

But we must do more than apologize. We Americans must also come together as never before with our brothers and sisters in all nations and collaborate, transforming American imperialism into a new initiative into a "global green republic" that embraces the higher purposes we all so yearn for.

To help facilitate the restoration of world peace and sustainability, my wife Meredith and I have moved to the Andes of Ecuador and have built a retreat and nature center, Montesueños (Mountain Dreams). Here we have found fertile soil to co-create with nature and other kindred spirits a prototype community for what-could-be locally and globally, far from the fears and distractions of a world gone mad. Our goals are world peace, sustainability and justice, our mission is research, education and action. Our values are truth, beauty, love.

We have found harmony here in Latin America as a crucible for new ideas, clear vision and radical social change. For example, we are working with the government of Ecuador to save the one-million-hectare Yasuni National Park, one of the most biodiverse rainforests on Earth, housing voluntarily isolated indigenous tribes and a superb botanical carbon dioxide sink. The Yasuni National Park also sits over a billion barrels of heavy crude oil, whose $30 billion extraction would ruin this precious Amazonian ecosystem. The thirst for petroleum is so overwhelming that the Bush government is pressuring Ecuadorian president Correa to let us destroy this spectacularly beautiful park even though the oil there would only provide twelve days of supply for the world!

No one issue compels our desire to embrace these new structures more than the possibility of a revolution in our energy policy. After a lifetime of study, I am convinced everyone in the world can have clean, cheap, safe, decentralized energy, water, food and a healthy environment. I am also convinced we can preserve our forests, wetlands, oceans, biodiversity, cultural identities, food and water supply.

But we cannot do so under the boot of a voracious "corporatocracy" bent on destroying our precious Earth habitat for their own selfish gain. I don't think I need to present the obvious statistics to prove my point.

It is essential to our survival that we openly examine the implications of having breakthrough new energy as one mega-solution to our crisis. We should create a forum for discussing this very real possibility, free from the shackles of suppression by those in control, unwittingly allied with an irrational scientific censorship. We must get beyond their debunking us as "pseudo-scientists" and "conspiracy theorists". The onus is on them, not on us, to try to demonstrate a negative. We're free to proceed, bearing in mind that the coveted "laws" of science are really only theories.

Let's also go beyond the focus on whether this gizmo or that gizmo will be the magic bullet or who will become the Bill Gates of new energy. Let's think beyond looking just at the technologies themselves. We absolutely must examine the larger context: What kind of social system can facilitate this? What do these developments mean for our collective future?

Clearly, we cannot allow Cheney et al run this one too. When massive profit and exploitation are not in sight, they always have suppressed--and always will--suppress it as long as they remain in power. It is clear they are destroying the world with an energy policy that will go into infamy as the most biocidal catastrophe in human history--with the possible exception of nuclear war (including the ones now underway that use depleted uranium as a weapon; this is a disastrous cancer-inducing radioactive substance that will affect untold future generations, up to 4.5 billion years!). Such wars and energy policies must be stopped.

We must look towards a future that cannot or will not resemble the past if we are to heed Al Gore's call for us to drastically reduce carbon emissions, if we are to reduce the perilous dangers of a nuclear energy economy, or if we are to lessen the extensive environmental impact of a biofuel economy that still emits CO2 and takes away from our forests and agriculture. Even if we create a "solartopia" or wind economy, these require massive infrastructure, and use a lot of valuable land and raw materials. Any sensible energy policy demands the broadest possible look at all alternatives, free of vested interests.

But the possibility of "solution energy" demands that we restore our democratic systems worldwide. It mandates social structures that can facilitate and regulate these technologies--if they are indeed found to be sufficiently clean and cheap--so they can become available to all of humanity. The main obstacle to a Solution Energy Age is a human question, not a technical one.

In summary, a solution energy revolution requires first a revolution overturning the actors and policies of our powerful and suppressive governments and corporations.

Short of divine intervention, we have no other choice but to act, if we are to survive this crisis. This goes beyond morality. It is necessary logic.

Humanity has moved nature to a tipping point, maybe beyond, according to leading atmospheric scientists and ecologists. Our current focus on fear and wars of conquest can only deepen the crisis. How we solve these problems demand of all of us the most revolutionary thinking and action we have ever dreamt of.

So let's jump ahead to the year 2050. What kind of world will you be inheriting then? I can see two extreme possibilities: the one where we are now headed and the one in which we (you) take the reins of power and declare a solution energy future The first is a totalitarian world in which the last drops of oil are squeezed out of the rainforests of the Amazon, the tundra and waters of the Arctic, and the tar sands of Alberta. A world of mass migrations from inundated coastal cities, a world without icecaps and glaciers, a world in which jungles become deserts, a world with few fish, a world where, ironically, Europe is placed into a deep freeze by the shutting down of the Gulf Stream conveyor system. A world devoid of fresh drinking water except for the rich. A world of cancer-inducing radioactive residue, toxic air, water and soil.

Or you could have a global green democracy and/or a revitalized United Nations. A world of clean cheap energy, food, water, and quality healthcare and education for a slowly dwindling population, now under benign control. A world in which you carry the torch as the new leaders and honest politicians of the future. You are the heirs of a reborn Gaia. The air and water are clean now. Carbon emissions are reduced by over 90%. People are happy and free. Nature is preserved, restored and sustained.

If you're 24 years old now, you will be my age (67) in 2050. I'll probably be long gone. The choices and consequences are yours to make! As a scientist and concerned world citizen, I have presented many things we must do to avert global catastrophe. How we implement our plan will be up to all of us, and will take great vision and courage.

We should start a "conspiracy of youth" to do the necessary long-term planning to create a peaceful, just and sustainable planet. Remember, the literal meaning of conspiracy is "breathing together"-- something we know how to do in the practice of yoga. This kind of approach will become necessary if we are to survive. We have a very big job to do, so let's roll up our sleeves and get going...and Godspeed!

Invitation for Solution Energy

I want to invite you to an auspicious Hiroshima Night gathering at our community center.

The evening will begin at 8:15 pm with an address by Leuren Moret, our planet's best informed person in the critically important matter of Depleted Uranium (DU). So she's so appropriate for any event marking the unspeakable Hiroshima atrocity!

Then we'll have some songs from Doug Adamz, who's quite well known and well liked by many here in town. He used to play with Greg Schindel and me back in the '70s at the place then called The Shop.

Finally, we'll hear from Brian O'Leary, who's arguably our planet's best informed person about optimum ways to replace coal/oil/nuclear energy swiftly.

Because I believe both these speakers have information tremendously important for our survival, I want to emphasize that you should not let money be a reason for not attending. You'll not be even slightly pressured to contribute even a dime.

Leuren Moret is an International Radiation Expert and Livermore Nuclear Weapons Lab whistleblower. After visiting the Peace Museums in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1991, she realized the horrific truth about nuclear weapons. She made the decision to dedicate her life to radiation issues and educating the global public about the Environmental and Public Health impacts of nuclear technologies. One of her most shocking discoveries was the link between radiation and diabetes, which she discovered in the vital statistics of Japan going back to 1899, and confirmed with Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Chernobyl, nuclear power plant, and Gulf War Syndrome studies.

She has been an expert witness at the International Criminal Tribunal for Afghanistan held in Japan, the first International 911 Conference in Tokyo, and is an Expert Witness on depleted uranium for the Canadian Parliament. Two years ago she started a depleted uranium bill movement to test returning veterans of the depleted uranium wars in the Middle East and Central Asia, and over 27 bills have now been introduced and/or passed in State Legislatures in the US.

Recently she started a citizen Geiger counter movement in Hawaii so that citizens could conduct air monitoring from their homes for radiation from depleted uranium blowing off of bombing and gunnery ranges all over Hawaii. This has quickly spread to Canada, the US, Australia, and Tasmania. This global movement empowers the citizens, intimidates the Pentagon and nuclear industry, and has become an effective deterrent to continued illegal use of depleted uranium weaponry.

Leuren Moret has been the target of severe whistleblower retaliation by the University of California and the Livermore Nuclear Weapons Lab, including the kidnapping of her daughter Zephyr when she was 13. She survived the Karen Silkwood experience including attempted assassination, and HAARP/satellite police radio electronic harassment. This is being used widely now since 1993 on activists, whistleblowers, and change agents not only in the US, but globally, especially in NATO countries. Her experience was described in a book called WARRIOR MOTHERS:

She is now known as the "Enfant Terrible" of radiation in Hawaii, but calls herself a "naughty scientist".

Over the past twenty years, Dr. O'Leary has researched, lectured and written extensively about new paradigms of science and global transformation. His most recent book Re-Inheriting the Earth: Awakening to Sustainable Solutions and Greater Truths describes how we can lift ourselves out of our current path of global destruction. Much of his work is based on extensive international travels to some of the best and brightest researchers of new science, new medicine and "free" energy.

Dr. O'Leary has published internationally ten trade books on the frontiers of science, space, energy and culture. He was a NASA scientist-astronaut, assistant professor of astronomy at Cornell University alongside Carl Sagan, and has also taught Physics for Poets at Princeton University and technology assessment at the University of California Berkeley School of Law and Hampshire College. He has published over 100 technical papers in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and another 100 popular magazine and Op-Ed pieces worldwide. He has appeared frequently on American national television and radio--including the Today Show, Larry King Live, the Donahue Show, Fox Television and the Art Bell Show.

A passionate environmentalist open to innovative solutions, Dr. O'Leary was special consultant to the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment, wrote speeches and was senior advisor to environmental presidential candidate Morris Udall. He also helped presidential candidates George McGovern, Walter Mondale and Jesse Jackson on economic policies to convert from polluting and military activities to green initiatives.

He is currently on the faculty of the University of Philosophical Research in Los Angeles, teaching in the Masters program in Transformational Psychology. He is cofounding President of a new activist group The New Energy Movement. He has recently completed the Sivananda Yoga Teachers Training Course and lectures widely at their ashrams and centers throughout the world. He is co-founder of the International Association of New Science and advisor to Dennis Weaver's Institute of Ecolonomics.

(Rome, Sunday, June 17, 2007)--Sunday afternoon Mark and I took the Eurostar train from Milano to Roma, a 4-1/2 hour trip that cost our sponsors just €51 for each of us. Our man Antoniello picks us up and drives us straight to the S.P.A. (Spazio Pubblico Autogestito) STRIKE in an abandoned bread distribution plant on the via U. Partini, where the Italian social critic Il Duca and I will introduce STRIKE’s screening of the David Zeiger film Sir! No Sir! We were slated to be joined by Bill Ayres, the Weather Underground organizer whose memoir Fugitive Days has just been published in Italian translation by COX 18 Books, but his father had just passed away and he wasn’t able to leave Chicago to fly to Italy.

Sir! No Sir! Is a document of the anti-war resistance movement within the American military during the War in Vietnam. It presents the movement from its tentative beginnings and follows it through the end of the war in 1975, speaking with many participants and close observers of the GI Anti-War Movement. It was an honor to be asked to address its audience in Roma and I would do it again the following week at a whole different venue. On the way out of the building we saw the STRIKE motto splashed onto the wall:

Finally it was time for Mark and me to check in to our little living spaces at Forte Prenestino. Maybe I will figure out how to post some photos to this Travelogue so I can show you what the Forte looks like, because it’s very difficult for me to describe. The key point is that it’s a former fortress, established circa 1853 and abandoned years ago before the gang of anarchist punks that runs it first occupied the grounds and declared it a Centro Sociale Occupato & Autogestito: An Occupied and Self-Governed Social Center.

When I was here last year the collective was celebrating the 20th anniversary of the day in 1986 that they seized the fort and turned it in to a social center, so they’ve been at it a long time. Like the COX 18 krewe in Milano, many of the members have outside employment but gather nightly at the Forte to have dinner and a few drinks, maybe watch some movies or dance to records or dig a performance by a local or visiting artist.

There are also a few crude residences on the grounds where the hard-core staff is housed which have been sort of tunneled into the sides of the hills that surround the two parade grounds within the fortress walls, spaced along a circular walkway about two conventional stories above ground level. This is where Mark and I will live for the next two weeks in our cozy little rooms dug into the hillside.

The two military parade grounds--suitable for training and marching army troops in preparation for battle but now utilized as staging areas for major concerts, dance parties, film screenings and disparate cultural events--are separated by a gigantic earthwork mound through the middle of which an elaborate series of tunnels has been constructed with rooms of various sizes staggered on both sides of the mammoth passageways. These rooms include the administrative office, a kitchen and dining area, a bar, a dance/concert space with full sound & lighting, a recording studio, practice rooms, workshops and spaces for other activities.

What a place! They used to house an army here, and stockpile their arms and ammunition, and march through the stone tunnels and around the parade grounds every day. Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love

Actually, the Summer of Love in 1967 was born on October 6, 1966, the day that LSD became illegal. In San Francisco, at precisely two o'clock in the afternoon, a cross-fertilization of mass protest and tribal celebration took place, as several hundred individuals simultaneously swallowed tabs of acid while the police stood by helplessly. Internal possession was not against the law. The CIA had originally envisioned using LSD as a means of control, but millions of young people became explorers of their own inner space. Acid was serving as a vehicle to help deprogram themselves from a civilization of insane priorities. The nuclear family was exploding. Extended families were developing into an alternative society.

There had always been a spirit of counterculture, taking different forms along the way. Just as the beats had evolved from the bohemians, the hippies were now evolving from the beats. No longer did you have to feel like the only Martian on your block. There were subcommunities developing across the country. "Make love, not war" had become more than a simple slogan. The banning of LSD also affected Bay Area underground papers. The political Berkeley Barb got psychedelicized and the psychedelic San Francisco Oracle got politicized. The CIA's scenario had backfired.

The blossoming of the flower children--encompassing sex, drugs and rock'n'roll--was at its core a spiritual revolution, with religions of repression being replaced by religions of liberation, where psychotropic drugs became a sacrament, sensuality developed into exquisite forms of personal art, and the way you lived your daily life demonstrated the heartbeat of your politics. There was an epidemic of idealism. Altruism became the highest form of selfishness.

Greek philosopher Socrates said, "Know thyself." Novelist Norman Mailer said, "Be thyself." And the '60s counterculture said, "Change thyself." Comedian George Carlin--who had entered show biz in the late '50s, wearing a suit and tie, performing traditional stand-up schtick--started surfing on that wave. He reinvented himself visually--jeans, T-shirt, beard, ponytail--and acknowledges that smoking marijuana really helped him to fine-tune his material.

"My comedy changed because my life changed," he says. "The act followed what was going on in me. Humor is very subjective, and what I was doing on stage didn't match up with what was going on in my life or the country--1967 was the Summer of Love, it was the height of the cultural revolution--love, peace, free sex, all crested that summer. Everything was changing. I was playing big shows like Jack Paar and Ed Sullivan, but inside I was anti-authority and I hated that shit. Parents might not have been able to relate, so I went to the kids. I was using my act to further my ideas about the times."

The mainstream media began to catch up with a whole new generation of pioneers traveling westward without killing a single Indian along the way. San Francisco became the focus of this pilgrimage. On Haight Street, runaway youngsters--refugees from their own famiies--stood outside a special tourist bus--guided by a driver "trained in sociological significance"--and they held mirrors up to the cameras pointing at them from the bus windows, so that the tourists would get photos of themselves trying to take photos of hippies. When Time magazine decided to do a cover story on hippies, a cable to their San Francisco bureau instructed researchers to "go at the description and delineation of the subculture as if you were studying the Samoans or the Trobriand Islanders."

This was at a time when a rumor that you could get legally high from smoking dried banana skins was eagerly spread across the country. In San Francisco, there was a banana smoke-in, and an entrepreneur started a successful banana-powder mail-order business, charging $5 an ounce. Agents from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs headed for their own laboratory, faithfully cooking, scraping and grinding thirty pounds of bananas, following a recipe published by the underground weeklies. For three weeks the FDA utilized apparatus that "smoked" the dried banana peels. The Los Angeles Free Press promoted another hallucinogenic--pickled jalapeno peppers, anally inserted. All over southern California, heads were shoving vegetables up their asses. After I mentioned on stage that the next big drug would be FDA, sure enough, Time reported that there would be "a super-hallucinogen called FDA." Silly me, I thought I had made that up.

And then there was Newsweek. Kate Coleman, who, before graduating from UC-Berkeley, was busted at a sit-in by the Free Speech Movement, got a job there in New York.

"In the summer of 1967," she recalls, "Newsweek indirectly bought enough grass and paraphernalia to warrant a felony sentence in New York of one to 15 years. Only three years behind the times, it was decided to do a cover story on marijuana, and naturally I was assigned to the story. I went down to the Lower East Side's Psychedelicatessen and purchased two beautiful water pipes, a hash pipe, roach holders, a dozen packets of cigarette papers, and a few little psychedelic toys. What a haul!

"I also bought two ounces of Acapulco Gold and one ounce of Panama Red from my favorite exclusive downtown dealer. Newsweek footed the whole bill without a ripple, and I got the payola of a lifetime. But it didn't end there. The fact that marijuana was to be legitimized twixt the pages of Newsweek gave rise to unexpected curiosity on the part of both the senior editor and the writer of the piece, both of whom decided, independent of each other, that their respective editing and writing would lack verisimilitude unless they tried the stuff. I was approached by people all over the magazine, asking me to get them some pot."

A highlight of the Summer of Love for me was an acid trip at the 1967 Expo in Montreal. I had been invited to speak at the Youth Pavilion and also to give my impressions, on Canadian TV, of the United States Pavilion, a huge geodesic dome engineered by Buckminster Fuller. Before entering the U.S. pavilion, which was guarded by marines who had attended a special Protocol School, I ingested a 300-microgram tab of LSD.

"This pavilion is really beautiful, with all these flowing colors," I said to the interviewer. "You don't see them, but I do. There's an interesting kind of symbolism, though. These military men, combat marines, I don't see that in any other pavilion, military men guiding you around, saying, 'Yes, there's the Little Girls room' or 'Would you like to touch my medals for killing Viet Cong?' I think it's very appropriate that we should be standing right here by the largest escalator in the western hemisphere, since my country is the greatest escalator of the war in southeast Asia....What I would like to do, as a gesture of my commitment--since I feel there's something lacking in the American Pavilion, which is a certain recognition of the fact that the country is really split in two--since we're a nation of symbols, I would like to indulge in a symbolic act. I have my draft card here."

"You're kidding."

"Would I kid about a thing like that?"

"It's his draft card."

(It was really a photostat of my draft card, since I burned one each time I was invited to speak at a college campus.)

"And I'll hold a match here."

"Are you sure you know what you're doing?"

"If I may."

"He's burning his draft card. How about that for a scoop, hey?"

"Now, the reason I'm doing this is, again, because we get hung up on symbols. People will be more upset about this than about the fact that children are being burned alive in Vietnam...."

The marine lieutenant called his captain. When the interview was finished, the captain told me it was against the law to burn my draft card. So I took out my draft card and showed it to him.

"But he burned it," the lieutenant insisted. "I saw him, sir. He burned it."

"I burned a photostat of my draft card. So I lied on television. That's not a crime. People do it all the time."

"It's also against the law to make a copy of your draft card," the captain said.

"Well, I destroyed the evidence."

I knew that political demonstrations were barred at Expo, but I had managed to smuggle one in, along with the acid. The interview was labeled an "incident," and there was a heated argument between the U.S. Information Agency and the Canadian Broadcasting Company, but the incident was already on tape, so now it had become a free-speech issue. It would be shown on TV that night and become front-page news in Montreal papers the next day.

Just as I was leaving the pavilion, a band struck up a fanfare. I made the mistake of projecting my own feelings, and suddenly I was convinced that LSD had been sprayed into the air, that everybody was tripping, that peace and love were breaking out all over the world at that very moment. As I was wallking along, I started smiling at families and waving to them, and they were smiling at me and waving back. But then a core of reality came to the surface, the force of my own feedback made me turn around, and I saw that those same people were now pointing at me. What an asshole! I still blush with embarrassment.

Now, a non-profit organization, the Council of Light, has organized a free 40th Anniversary all-day concert to be held at Golden Gate Park on September 2 "intended to not only celebrate the music, but also resonate with the consciousness raising of the '60s as represented by eight goals chosen to receive donations and publicity from the concert. They are: Environmental Sustainability, Relieve Poverty & Hunger, Raise Education, Promote Gender Equality, Reduce Child Mortality, Improve Maternal Health, Combat AIDS, and create a Global Partnership for Development in undeveloped nations. Charities chosen by the Council representing these eight goals will receive all money raised beyond basic costs of the production."

But you don't have to be present at the concert to celebrate this phenomenon that occurred four decades ago--an evolutionary jump in consciousness--exploding out of the blandness and repression of the Eisenhower-Nixon years. Currently, a mass awakening, exploding out of the blandness and repression of the Bush-Cheney years, seems to be happening again. Or is that just wishful thinking?

I asked several folks to recollect an aspect of what the Summer of Love meant to them.

Stephen Gaskin--author of Cannabis Spirituality:

When the Human Be-In of January 1967 at Golden Gate Park was conceived, it was against the background of sit-in's and teach-in's and was somewhat inspired by the civil rights movement. It was like a true rumor when the word on Haight Street was that all the hippies were supposed to come out to the Polo Field and see us all together.

I walked up to that gang of hippies filling the meadow, and I had to sit down and lean against a tree as if I was coming on to acid. While I was coming on, a mounted policeman rode up to look at the crowd and was addressed by a woman, also surveying the crowd.

She said, "Officer, my son is down there. Help me find him."

The officer replied, "Ma'am, everybody down there is smoking marijuana. I can't go down there."

Later on, down by the stage, I saw a guy who seemed to be trying to hypnotize a young woman who was on acid by waving an incense stick in her face and rapping on her intently. I thought he was messing with her mind and she seemed to be in trouble. I tapped her on the shoulder to get her attention and said, "Do you need to be rescued?"

She said, with evident relief, "Yes, please!"

She and I walked over to the edge of the crowd and sat on the grass and she laid her head on my knee and finished coming on until she felt strong enough to go dig the rock and roll.

It was the first time we got to see how many of us there were.

Stewart Brand--publisher of The Whole Earth Catalog:

As I recall, it was either late in 1967 or early next year that just the torso of the lovable dope dealer Superspade was found hanging from a tree out by Ocean Beach, signalling that the Mob was taking over from the amateurs, and the high times were not over, but the luv was.

The displaced amateur dealers, now skilled entrepreneurs, took their budding business acumen elsewhere in the 1970s, starting all manner of companies, such as Whole Earth Access (same name as my Catalog, quite different people).

Roberta Price--author of Huerfano: a memoir of life in the counterculture:

In the summer of 1967, between junior and senior year, I got job in London as assistant to the Young Ideas editor at British Vogue. I was a very young 21, but nobody asked if I had any ideas. I got sandwiches for Mandy Clapperton, the acting Young Ideas editor (the previous one was out with hepatitis). I went for clothes at Mary Quant and peeked over the office partition as a Beatle or Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithful walked through the office. They all seemed frail and vulnerable in person.

My U.S. friend Pam was studying in London that summer, and at night we swung through Swinging London together. At Granny Takes a Trip, I bought a white crocheted dress that stopped a few inches below my crotch. Pam bought dope from a young Englishmen. We couldn't find rolling papers, so Pam used tampon wrapper paper to roll joints, which worked. On Carnaby Street, we bought bubble dresses for us and Nehru jackets for the guys back home.

On weekend nights we went to the UFO, which had a constant light show and a staff who sold acid. The Liverpool Love Festival, Procul Harem, Tomorrow, the Pink Floyd, Arthur Brown, Eric Burdon and Fairport Convention played. We danced with men but couldn't hear their names; the flashing lights were enough to give you an epileptic fit. The crowd was a bit international, the space was dark, flash lit, grimy, vast.

Pam and I got $79 round-trip tickets on a German student train from London to Athens. It took three days, and all day long they piped American rock music over the sound system. Their musical taste wasn't as good as at the UFO. I heard "When you go to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair" at least 50 times. We danced in the aisles anyway.

In Greece, we rented a VW bug with two young Englishmen we met on the train. We drove around for a week, camping out at Delphi on the full moon. I was restless and dreamed of the Oracle. She was younger than I but looked like a hippie with her ethnic leather sandals and the wreath in her hair. She told me that after that summer, everything would be different. I already knew it.

Darryl Henriques--author of 50 Ways to Pave the Earth.

I began my professional show business career in 1967 when I joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe, earning the princely sum of $5 a performance. We were doing an antiwar Commedia play called The Military Lover. The Fillmore, the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, the Doors, the Beatles, the Stones, the Byrds, the Animals--all of God's creatures--you remember, don't you? That was the year Captain Kirk hot-rodded around the galaxy in the Starship Enterprise and Dustin Hoffman graduated with Mrs. Robinson. Allen Ginsberg was Howling, Paul Krassner was realizing, Abbie Hoffman was freeloading, and Scoop Nisker on KSAN in San Francisco was telling everyone, "If you don't like the news, then go out and make some of your own!"

We took the show on the road ($65 per week, a 1300% raise) and traveled across the country performing in theaters and colleges. It seemed every time we got to a college Dow Chemical had just been there, was coming there or, in the case of the University of Wisconsin, they were there. Dow was going to colleges across the country to recruit students to assist them in the crucial task of fabricating napalm to be used in Vietnam.

Next morning we went to the demonstration at the Commerce building, and at one point someone picked up a bugle and blew the signal to charge. The students immediately surrounded the building, and a group of them went in to conduct a peaceful sit-in. The campus police were unable to convince the protesters to leave, so the Chancellor called in the city police who took it upon themselves to beat the students with their nightsticks and spray them with tear gas, sending 30 of them to the hospital. It was officially the first violent protest against the peaceful protesting of the Vietnam War and Dow Chemical.

The irony was that according to the public relations director of Dow, they "could not have gotten better advertising" than student protests. They even started a company publication called the Napalm News. Not only that, but more students signed up to be interviewed, and on many campuses it became a "badge of honor" to be interviewed. Dow was justifiably infamous for their production of napalm, but their product that did more damage to people and the environment was Agent Orange. It was an equal opportunity weapon since it poisoned American servicemen as well as Vietnamese peasants. Better death through chemistry.

Little did I know how crucial it was for America to stop the Vietnamese from invading America. But thank God, in the end we won and now the Vietnamese are busy making our running shoes and sewing our T-shirts. You have to admit that killing over two million people to get them to make our running shoes was a bit extreme, but such are the pitfalls of the global economy.

Ken Babbs--Merry Prankster:

Where were Ken Kesey and the Pranksters? They had already gone, as Peter Coyote put it, "under the asphalt." The previous year, after two busts for marijuana, Kesey had faked a suicide and disappeared into Mexico, leaving me in charge of the bus and ramrodding the Acid Tests in LA which came to a screaming halt the day before LSD became illegal when the bus and the Pranksters slunk out of town and hied off to Mexico to join up with Kesey, everyone to return to the Hoo Ess Ay when Kesey gave hisself up to the FBI and was sentenced to six months in jail.

Kesey and Paige took the fall so the Pranksters could go free, reason being to keep Neal Cassady from going to trial. He'd already been busted twice and had done two years in the Big House for two joints, and with one more conviction he'd be up for a life sentence. In the high days of the Summer of Love, the whole fershlugglnger crew cranked up the bus and drove down to the sheriff's honor camp to visit Kesey and Paige. They parked in the lot next to the camp, speakers playing James Brown, Pranksters in their Day-Glo regalia, lined up at the gate to be checked in.

At the end of the day the bus pulled out, "Hit the Road, Jack" blaring, up the Bayshore into San Francisco to the Haight and a stop at 711 Ashbury to visit the Dead before they, too, got busted, the only appearance of the Pranksters in the Summer of Love carnival, and then it was back to Oregon, to gardening, building, kids in school, digging under the asphalt, deeper, joined by Kesey and Paige in the leaf-changing days of fall.

Before the moon-shot, before Watergate, one summer a long long time ago, there was The Hippies. They came to our Fair City, from every town, every place in the country, from near and far, looking for the Haight-Ashbury. They were young, gripped with restlessness and seeking a higher way of life. They filled the sidewalks of the old neighborhood--looking, seeking, clutching old suitcases, barefoot and hungry, with no particular place to be. Girls with raccoon eyes wept in the arms of boys just out of the Scouts, as hope faded for hot food and a safe place to sleep. Exhaustion and grime settled over them, and as weeks passed, more and more came.

The local shopkeepers tried to cope, and the young stole and carried off whatever they could. Puppies on strings and kittens stuffed in pockets accompanied the march. The good folk were moved to give food, some helped the mob find sleeping space, but crime soared and frightened them. The mayor of Fair City awoke in a foul mood and ordered sweeps, and the police raided freely. Tear gas rolled over the crowded street as thousands of lives touched and found each other and eventually themselves Music and songs from sidewalk songwriters filled the smokey air as joy spilled over and changed Fair City into Hippie Heaven.

And even today, Haight Street is filled with signs, clues, artifacts, reminders of the glory days for sale in a hundred shops. Go there and see for yourself.

The current government of the United States ignores the wishes, safety, and happiness of WE THE PEOPLE.

The Christian, Muslim, Jewish GOD said, "thou shall not kill" and (for true Christians) JESUS extended this concept when he said,

The Antichrist is variously understood as being a consummately evil system of government or leader.

The Antichrist will be a leader who deceives many people.

The Antichrist will divide the world and create war without end.

The Antichrist will declare that things which are evil to be good.

The Antichrist will refer to war as peace, death as a solution for justice, and serving the wealthy as a means of helping the poor.

Many nations will recognize that he is evil, but his own people will be inclined to believe his deceptions.

"Dry Drunk" Syndrome

Dry drunk is a term used, often disparagingly, by members of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and by substance abuse counselors who subscribe to the AA theory of alcoholism to describe the recovering alcoholic who is no longer drinking but whose thought processes are considered to continue to be distorted by the thought patterns of addiction.

George Bush says he talks with GOD and personally, I wish everyone would Google "Dry Drunk Syndrome" and at least look at a greater possibility.

At the end of the interview, the news reporter stated that Mr. Barak joined him an hour before it was broadcasted, meaning Barak was there even an hour earlier. In real time of events this means he was there within minutes of the blast, with a pre-written interview. He knew beforehand that the attacks would take place. It was not difficult to see that Barak came with a pre written speech as he is quick to point out all of Israel's enemies which he calls "rogue states". The answers to the interview were carefully prepared to use public sentiments created by the blast, against enemies of Israel. These could not have been developed between the time of attacks and Barak appearing on BBC. Barak's presence in UK could also not have been co-incidental at that crucial time. - 11 September 2001

'Rein in insurgents or we'll be voted out'

ALEXANDER DOWNER has a dire warning for the Iraqi Government: rein in the insurgents or there could be a change of government in Australia.

Unless the Iraqis improved security, the governments in Australia and the US could be thrown out, the Foreign Affairs Minister said yesterday. Public patience on Iraq was "wearing pretty thin".

"You will get people electing governments that do want just to walk away from Iraq," Mr Downer said.

Federal ministers have been directing blame for the continued insurgency on to the Iraqi Government and away from the presence of coalition troops. The Prime Minister, John Howard, pointedly expressed his frustration with his Iraqi counterpart, Nouri al-Maliki, in an interview with the Herald in June. And last week he wrote to him, urging him to take advantage of an increase in US troop numbers to improve security.

The Opposition's foreign affairs spokesman, Robert McClelland, said the Government was preparing the ground for a pre-election about-turn on Iraq to neutralise it as an election issue.

Mr Downer defended Mr Howard's incursion into Iraqi domestic politics, saying the situation there threatened to undermine the war against terrorism. Iraq was a "hard sell" when the process of reconciliation was not working as fast as it should, he told the Nine network.

"You will end up with politicians like the US Congress simply not funding any further security in Iraq," he said.

US anti-war group ordered to take down Iraq demo posters

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A US anti-war group has been warned it will be fined 10,000 dollars if it does not remove posters in Washington announcing a march in the capital next month against US involvement in Iraq, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.

"The ANSWER Coalition has received citations from the authorities in Washington threatening to fine us 10,000 dollars unless several hundred posters announcing the September 15 march on Washington DC are removed," Sarah Sloan, the staff coordinator for the anti-war group, told AFP.

"We have until Thursday to take down the posters," she said.

Several hundred yellow posters have been put up around Washington announcing the protest, which is timed to coincide with the release of a report by the US military commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, on progress in the US "surge" strategy of raising troop levels.

Washington city authorities said the posters have to come down because they were stuck on with adhesive that did not meet city regulations.

"The charge about adhesives is false," Sloan said.

"This is a definitely a calculated political move aimed at disrupting the demonstration, which has been organised on a day when the world's eyes will be on Washington for the Petraeus report," she said.

Demonstrators from at least 90 cities around the United States and Canada have already pledged to come to Washington for the march, which will be part of a week of anti-war protests led by veterans of the Iraq war, according to Sloan.

A petition calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush, allegedly carrying one million signatures and endorsed by former US attorney general Ramsey Clark, will also be submitted to officials during the week's activities.

I grew up in a democratic system of government. This is what was taught all through Kindergarten through College. Freedom of thought and expression were hallmarks of my early education. These concepts and theories integrated my belief in an American system of democracy. Consequently, I became a musician because of these inalienable rights. Make no mistake I am an artist and a capitalist because of this system that I believe in and our country. I don't however believe that a capitalist corporation such as AT&T has the right to subvert the first amendment of the constitution to which we all are accountable. This happened on the night we played Lollapalooza. I was dismayed to hear that the act of censoring free speech was used to edit our song Daughter for a webcast. Surely the American listening public can discern for themselves what they deem acceptable to hear. This is a hallmark of our American way!! The freedom to listen to what you want or don't want to. The American public was duped as was I in believing that I can speak freely without censorship.

I can only look to historical figures who are above reproach in my mind, such as Thomas Jefferson "I hope we shall crush...in it's birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country." I feel that corporations can still exist without worry of a few words at a rock concert and need not trample upon our constitution for the sake of profit.

Another example that I believe is relevant is a George Orwell quote from Animal Farm. "If liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." Some people don't want to hear our political beliefs in a song but that too is the beauty of America. WE CAN DISAGREE and still function as a democracy. When one person or company decides what others can hear, that is totalitarian thinking! This runs contrary to America and threatens the core of our freedom. We can think for ourselves, AT&T. I had the great pleasure of seeing the Space Shuttle launch live in Florida today. This gave me a feeling of excitement and patriotism in my country today.It showed me a future of ingenuity and promise for a better America.

With that I will leave you with a last quote from the quintessential American "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." This is an example of my belief in what Ed was saying the night we were censored during Daughter. You can't get more American than Mark Twain!!! Say no to censorship, it leads to dictatorship!

I think there's a certain level of frustration with the leadership in general, inability to work - come together to get, for example, lower gas prices or honest elections.

People at the grass roots are sick and tired of the violence, sick and tired of the radicalism. They want a better life and they're beginning to reject the Neocon Republican extremists.

The fundamental question is, Will the government respond to the demands of the people? And, if the government doesn't demand - or respond to the demands of the people, they will replace the government? That's up to the United States citizens to make that decision, not Neocon Republican puppets and the Democraps that serve them.

Summer Of Love Legend Mike Wilhelm and Lake Blues All-Stars featuring Jim Williams and Jon Hopkins were an early crowd favorite on Friday night. Their set included Robert Johnson's "Love In Vain" and B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby."

Hopkins, the "Barrister of Bass," did a fine rendition of Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man," playing bass and harmonica simultaneously.

A female vocalist named Neon guested on "The Thrill is Gone" and "I'm Tore Down." When not singing she worked the crowd admirably and did great percussion work.

Jim Williams put the great Mike Wilhelm's career in perspective by mentioning that Wilhelm was Jerry Garcia's favorite guitar player. Wilhelm interjected that he was playing though an amp that he bought from Garcia. (On a side note, both Mike Wilhelm and Betty Mae Fikes were pictured in recent issues of Rolling Stone Magazine.)

Wilhelm displayed great virtuosity and chops in his note selection during his solos. The band closed with "Red House' and "Further On Up The Road" to a great ovation by the crowd. Great set!

Ordinarily I would not use this term. But when I came across the article "Dry Drunk" - - Is Bush Making a Cry for Help? in American Politics Journal by Alan Bisbort, I was ready to concede, in the case of George W. Bush, the phrase may be quite apt.

Dry drunk is a slang term used by members and supporters of Alcoholics Anonymous and substance abuse counselors to describe the recovering alcoholic who is no longer drinking, one who is dry, but whose thinking is clouded. Such an individual is said to be dry but not truly sober. Such an individual tends to go to extremes.

It was when I started noticing the extreme language that colored President Bush's speeches that I began to wonder. First there were the terms-- "crusade" and "infinite justice" that were later withdrawn. Next came "evil doers," "axis of evil," and "regime change", terms that have almost become clichés in the mass media. Something about the polarized thinking and the obsessive repetition reminded me of many of the recovering alcoholics/addicts I had treated. (A point worth noting is that because of the connection between addiction and "stinking thinking," relapse prevention usually consists of work in the cognitive area). Having worked with recovering alcoholics for years, I flinched at the single-mindedness and ego- and ethnocentricity in the President's speeches. (My husband likened his phraseology to the gardener character played by Peter Sellers in the movie, Being There). Since words are the tools, the representations, of thought, I wondered what Bush's choice of words said about where he was coming from. Or where we would be going.

First, in this essay, we will look at the characteristics of the so-called "dry drunk;" then we will see if they apply to this individual, our president; and then we will review his drinking history for the record. What is the dry drunk syndrome? "Dry drunk" traits consist of:

* Exaggerated self-importance and pomposity
* Grandiose behavior
* A rigid, judgmental outlook
* Impatience
* Childish behavior
* Irresponsible behavior
* Irrational rationalization
* Projection
* Overreaction

Clearly, George W. Bush has all these traits except exaggerated self importance. He may be pompous, especially with regard to international dealings, but his actual importance hardly can be exaggerated. His power, in fact, is such that if he collapses into paranoia, a large part of the world will collapse with him. Unfortunately, there are some indications of paranoia in statements such as the following: "We must be prepared to stop rogue states and their terrorist clients before they are able to threaten or use weapons of mass destruction against the United States and our allies and friends." The trait of projection is evidenced here as well, projection of the fact that we are ready to attack onto another nation which may not be so inclined.

Bush's rigid, judgmental outlook comes across in virtually all his speeches. To fight evil, Bush is ready to take on the world, in almost a Biblical sense. Consider his statement with reference to Israel: "Look my job isn't to try to nuance. I think moral clarity is important... this is evil versus good."

Bush's tendency to dichotomize reality is not on the Internet list above, but it should be, as this tendency to polarize is symptomatic of the classic addictive thinking pattern. I describe this thinking distortion in Addiction Treatment: A Strengths Perspective as either/or reasoning-- "either you are with us or against us." Oddly, Bush used those very words in his dealings with other nations. All-or-nothing thinking is a related mode of thinking commonly found in newly recovering alcoholics/addicts. Such a worldview traps people in a pattern of destructive behavior.

Obsessive thought patterns are also pronounced in persons prone to addiction. There are organic reasons for this due to brain chemistry irregularities; messages in one part of the brain become stuck there. This leads to maddening repetition of thoughts. President Bush seems unduly focused on getting revenge on Saddam Hussein ("he tried to kill my Dad") leading the country and the world into war, accordingly.

Grandiosity enters the picture as well. What Bush is proposing to Congress is not the right to attack on one country but a total shift in military policy: America would now have the right to take military action before the adversary even has the capacity to attack. This is in violation, of course, of international law as well as national precedent. How to explain this grandiose request? Jane Bryant Quinn provides the most commonly offered explanation in a recent Newsweek editorial, "Iraq: It's the Oil, Stupid." Many other opponents of the Bush doctrine similarly seek a rational motive behind the obsession over first, the war on terror and now, Iraq. I believe the explanation goes deeper than oil, that Bush's logic is being given too much credit; I believe his obsession is far more visceral.

On this very day, a peace protestor in Portland held up the sign, "Drunk on Power." This, I believe, is closer to the truth. The drive for power can be an unquenchable thirst, addictive in itself. Senator William Fulbright, in his popular bestseller of the 1960s, The Arrogance of Power, masterfully described the essence of power-hungry politics as the pursuit of power; this he conceived as an end in itself. "The causes and consequences of war may have more to do with pathology than with politics," he wrote, "more to do with irrational pressures of pride and pain than with rational calculation of advantage and profit."

Another "dry drunk" trait is impatience. Bush is far from a patient man: "If we wait for threats to fully materialize," he said in a speech he gave at West Point, "we will have waited too long." Significantly, Bush only waited for the United Nations and for Congress to take up the matter of Iraq's disarmament with extreme reluctance.

Alan Bisbort argues that Bush possesses the characteristics of the "dry drunk" in terms of: his incoherence while speaking away from the script; his irritability with anyone (for example, Germany's Schröder) who dares disagree with him; and his dangerous obsessing about only one thing (Iraq) to the exclusion of all other things.

In short, George W. Bush seems to possess the traits characteristic of addictive persons who still have the thought patterns that accompany substance abuse. If we consult the latest scientific findings, we will discover that scientists can now observe changes that occur in the brain as a result of heavy alcohol and other drug abuse. Some of these changes may be permanent. Except in extreme cases, however, these cognitive impairments would not be obvious to most observers.

To reach any conclusions we need of course to know Bush's personal history relevant to drinking/drug use. To this end I consulted several biographies. Yes, there was much drunkenness, years of binge drinking starting in college, at least one conviction for DUI in 1976 in Maine, and one arrest before that for a drunken episode involving theft of a Christmas wreath. According to J.D. Hatfield's book, Fortunate Son, Bush later explained:

"[A]lcohol began to compete with my energies....I'd lose focus." Although he once said he couldn't remember a day he hadn't had a drink, he added that he didn't believe he was "clinically alcoholic." Even his father, who had known for years that his son had a serious drinking problem, publicly proclaimed: "He was never an alcoholic. It's just he knows he can't hold his liquor."

Bush drank heavily for over 20 years until he made the decision to abstain at age 40. About this time he became a "born again Christian," going as usual from one extreme to the other. During an Oprah interview, Bush acknowledged that his wife had told him he needed to think about what he was doing. When asked in another interview about his reported drug use, he answered honestly, "I'm not going to talk about what I did 20 to 30 years ago."

That there might be a tendency toward addiction in Bush's family is indicated in the recent arrests or criticism of his daughters for underage drinking and his niece for cocaine possession. Bush, of course, deserves credit for his realization that he can't drink moderately, and his decision today to abstain. The fact that he doesn't drink moderately, may be suggestive of an inability to handle alcohol. In any case, Bush has clearly gotten his life in order and is in good physical condition, careful to exercise and rest when he needs to do so. The fact that some residual effects from his earlier substance abuse, however slight, might cloud the U.S. President's thinking and judgment is frightening, however, in the context of the current global crisis.

One final consideration that might come into play in the foreign policy realm relates to Bush's history relevant to his father. The Bush biography reveals the story of a boy named for his father, sent to the exclusive private school in the East where his father's reputation as star athlete and later war hero were still remembered. The younger George's achievements were dwarfed in the school's memory of his father. Athletically he could not achieve his father's laurels, being smaller and perhaps less strong. His drinking bouts and lack of intellectual gifts held him back as well. He was popular and well liked, however. His military record was mediocre as compared to his father's as well. Bush entered the Texas National Guard. What he did there remains largely a mystery. There are reports of a lot of barhopping during this period. It would be only natural that Bush would want to prove himself today, that he would feel somewhat uncomfortable following, as before, in his father's footsteps. I mention these things because when you follow his speeches, Bush seems bent on a personal crusade. One motive is to avenge his father. Another seems to be to prove himself to his father. In fact, Bush seems to be trying somehow to achieve what his father failed to do - - to finish the job of the Gulf War, to get the "evildoer" Saddam.

To summarize, George W. Bush manifests all the classic patterns of what alcoholics in recovery call "the dry drunk." His behavior is consistent with barely noticeable but meaningful brain damage brought on by years of heavy drinking and possible cocaine use. All the classic patterns of addictive thinking that are spelled out in my book are here:

the tendency to go to extremes (leading America into a massive 100 billion dollar strike-first war);

* a "kill or be killed mentality;" the tunnel vision;
* "I" as opposed to "we" thinking;
* the black and white polarized thought processes (good versus evil, all or nothing thinking).
* His drive to finish his father's battles is of no small significance, psychologically.

If the public (and politicians) could only see what Fulbright noted as the pathology in the politics. One day, sadly, they will.

O'Neill's Revelations and the Mind of Bush

Paul O'Neill's revelations, the primary source for Ron Suskind's book The Price of Loyalty concerning the timing of George W Bush's plans to overthrow Saddam in Iraq should have come as no surprise. The ostensible reasons for going to war -- the claimed link between Iraq and al-Queda and the claimed possession of weapons of mass destruction -- have been shown to be without substance. The typical explanation offered by the mainstream press and political pundits was that September 11 was a turning point.

What September 11 did was provide the justification. "From the start," said Paul O'Neill in his book interview, "we were building the case against Hussein and looking at how we could take him out and change Iraq into a new country…It was about finding a way to do it that was the tone of it…the president saying, ‘Fine. Go find me a way to do this.' And how would O'Neill know? O'Neill, as Secretary of the Treasury also sat on the National Security Council.

Even though, under pressure, while O'Neill has tried to tone down his statements, the mass media have continued to highlight the revelations. Missing from all the recent analyses and editorials, however, is any attention to the reason why: Why did Bush have this thing about Saddam? Why the "detour into an unnecessary war in Iraq?" as the U.S.Army War College recently put it.

"He tried to kill my Dad," the President once explained. But I believe there was more to this unnecessary war than that. I believe there was a method in Bush's madness, a method that most likely had as little to do with oil as it did to terrorism. For the answer we need to look deeply in the psyche of the man (inferred from his biography). Earlier several other writers and I likened Bush's personality characteristics to those of a person who, in AA parlance, is "dry" but whose thinking is not really sober. Grandiosity, rigidity, and intolerance of ambiguity, and a tendency to obsess about things are among the traits associated with the dry drunk. The dry drunk quits drinking, but his or her obsession with the bottle is often replaced with other obsessions. Twelve Step programs help their members modify their all-or-nothing thought patterns which associated with the disease alcoholism. "Easy does it" and "One day at a time" are among the slogans; the serenity prayer, similarly, helps persons with addictive tendencies to curb the tendency to excess.

In Bush's irrational patterns of thought lie the clues to his single-minded obsession with Iraq. For the explanation for Bush's vendetta against this one country, we have to look to his biography and to the meaning that Iraq held for his father.

The father-son relationship can be problematic in any family. When the father is considered a big hero, the first-born son, especially one bearing the father's name, identity issues are common. As any chronology of George W Bush's childhood will show, the son was set up to follow in the exact footsteps of his father. Sent away to the very New England prep school where his father's accomplishments were still remembered, the younger Bush became better known for his pranks than athletic or academic achievements. His drinking bouts caused problems during his military service as well. (Remember that his father had been a war hero.) In college there was heavy drinking and other drug misuse, one arrest for a wild college prank and one conviction for drunken driving. A much later religious conversion turned his life around.

George W. Bush's father set him up in business, and his father's presidency helped him get his start in politics. His father, for all his success, experienced failure on three occasions. He was widely criticized for not finishing the job in Iraq-- for not moving the troops in to "take out" Saddam following the Gulf War victory--and he failed to get his bill to fund a NASA flight to Mars, and finally, he lost his bid for re-election.

What a unique opportunity has fallen George W Bush's way. The prodigal son can not only prove himself to his father but he can show up his father at his own game. Remember that for his cabinet and key advisers, he chose some of the same men from his father's regime. He chose people, furthermore, who would be favorable to a return campaign, "a crusade" against Iraq. Given his past history and tendency toward obsessiveness, the temptation to achieve heroism through a re-enactment of his father's war clearly would have been too much for George Bush Jr. to resist. To accomplish his mission he would have to throw caution and international diplomacy to the winds, lie convincingly to the American people, threaten allies, bully members of the United Nations, but in the end he would be able to dress in full military regalia and declare "mission accomplished."

The fact that the targeting of Iraq had become one man's personal crusade even seemed somewhat extreme to the father who was indirectly responsible. Yes, the man who knows George W. best, the person most familiar with his rashness of thought, indirectly sent him a message. In a speech at Tufts University, George Bush Sr. emphasized the need for the U.S. to maintain close ties with Europe and the UN. "You've got to reach out to the other person," he advised. More recently, Bush has raised an unprecedented amount of money for his re-election campaign. And his grandiose (and much ridiculed) plans to launch rockets to Mars (and the moon) could have been predicted. The method in his madness is clear once you understand the pattern. Whether the majority of the American people will ever see the light remains to be seen. The starting point may be Paul O'Neill's revelations, because one is then to prone to ask the question, Why?
