Psychedelic Trips For The Mind

Psychedelic Trips For The Mind

Chapter 3, The Grateful Dead, Page 82:

Group Hallucination
by Curtis

San Francisco, 1967, the Human Be-In.

Something odd happened at this Gathering of the Tribes that still permeates my mind. I have confirmed that I was not the only one who experienced this.

Right before the Grateful Dead played, there was a "gentle person" from India who offered blessings from the stage. While this was occurring, a group of folks in the back of the crowd started screaming, "Fuck you, bring on the band," and other derogatory comments.

The person on stage stopped for a moment, kind of gazed in the general direction of the comments, bowed, and something that looked like a lightening bolt left him, and struck in that general area, illuminating it with light. This in turn seemed to swell the energy to even greater heights, and I heard the words, "Don't freak with a freak" come from the Cosmic Kitchen.

It was only a matter of moments before the Dead were (chuckle) tuned up and playing. This is when the oddity took place. I think the band was playing a song called "Alligator." The audience energy was swirling in what appeared to be a circle and gave the impression of being on a gigantic carousel. This swirling re-formed into this incredible egg-like shape of light that appeared above the stage, and everyone's body seemed to dissolve.

What happened next is hard to describe. It was like the light had joined everyone there together, and the realm of individuality was gone. There was a mutual chill of excitement that filled the air, and I began to hear comments like: "I think we made it." "Are we here?" "This is it!" And "God, isn't it beautiful?" For a moment there was absolute silence. We were all stuck in this "egg of light," and it was beyond any beauty that I could describe in words.

It was at this point I heard the words "Where do we go from here?" come from the Cosmic Kitchen. Almost instantaneously, I heard hundreds of responses come from the crowd, and very few were identical. The light began to fade, and in a flash we were back to the stage and crowd. I did hear folks asking one another, "Did you experience that?" among other questions, and the answer was yes.

When everything came back together, something new was present. It no longer seemed that we were one big family. It appeared that we somehow had resettled into smaller groups that were perhaps now driven by ego. Coincidently, this sort of shows up in successive events pertaining to the history of Haight/Ashbury and that culture.

This experience at the Be-In kept running through my mind. In the early '70s, Ram Dass and I discussed this at length, while sitting on the roof of the Palace Heights Hotel in Delhi, India. We came to the conclusion that this incident, which occurred in Golden Gate Park, was the beginning of what we termed the "Social Karma Ego Dharma Games," or a point where people started growing apart, rather than growing together.

From the heart of the United States, we extend a profound apology to the rest of the world for the serious failure of our political system.

While not receiving a majority of the popular vote and selected by the Supreme Court rather than elected, we nevertheless have ended up with a sociopath as President surrounded by religious fanatics who actively seek war and others who seek to destroy our democracy and impose authoritarian values.

Part Seven: Your enemy is not surrounding your country your enemy is ruling your country
by Balz

Year after year, George W. Bush has gone to elaborate lengths, spent enormous sums of money, taken great risks to build and keep weapons of mass destruction. But why? The only possible explanation, the only possible use he could have for those weapons, is to dominate, intimidate, or attack.

With nuclear arms or a full arsenal of chemical and biological weapons, George W. Bush could resume his ambitions of conquest in the Middle East and create deadly havoc in that region. And this Congress and the America people must recognize another threat. Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications, and statements by Scooter Libby and others facing indictment reveal that George W. Bush aids and protects terrorists, including Neocons Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Scott McClellan, et. al. Secretly, and without fingerprints, he could create another 9/11, provide one of his hidden weapons to terrorists, or help them develop their own.

Before September the 11th, many in the world believed that George W. Bush could be contained. But chemical agents, lethal viruses and shadowy terrorist networks are not easily contained. Imagine those Neocon hijackers with other weapons and other plans -- this time armed by George W. Bush. It would take one vial, one canister, one crate slipped into this country to bring a day of horror like none we have ever known. We will do everything in our power to make sure that that day never comes. (Applause.)

Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike? If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words, and all recriminations would come too late. Trusting in the sanity and restraint of George W. Bush is not a strategy, and it is not an option. (Applause.)

The dictator who is assembling the world's most dangerous weapons has already used them on whole villages (Shock, Awe, and MK77) -- leaving thousands of Iraqi citizens dead, blind, or disfigured. Iraqi refugees tell us how forced confessions are obtained -- by torturing children while their parents are made to watch. International human rights groups have catalogued other methods used in the torture chambers of Iraq: electric shock, burning with hot irons, dripping acid on the skin, mutilation with electric drills, cutting out tongues, and rape. If this is not evil, then evil has no meaning. (Applause.)

And tonight I have a message for the brave and oppressed people of the United States: Your enemy is not surrounding your country -- your enemy is ruling your country. (Applause.) And the day he and his regime are removed from power will be the day of your liberation. (Applause.)

US Justice Department opposes equal Internet access for all

The Bush administration has come out against the idea of equal access to Internet communications. The US Justice Department has declared that ISPs should be allowed to charge a fee for “priority web traffic” – a notion which critics say opens the door to a two-tier system divided between "information rich information poor".

As part of a review of high-speed Internet practices, the agency told the Federal Communications Commission that it is opposed to "net neutrality," the principle that all sites should be equally accessible to any web user.

A number of American telephone and cable companies, such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon have in the past indicated said they want to be able to charge some users more money for loading certain content or websites faster than others.

The Justice Department said imposing a Net neutrality regulation could hamper development of the net, something that other web experts hotly contend. They say it is a stitch up between government and corporate interests.

The agency claimed that “providing different levels of service is common, efficient and could satisfy consumers.”

In their report, they declare: “Whether or not the same type of differentiated products and services will develop on the Internet should be determined by market forces”.

Some ten weeks ago the Federal Trade Commission’s chair Deborah Platt Majoras cautioned policy makers to enact net neutrality regulation.

Supporters of a regulatory network say that it is necessary to keep the web open, discrimination against certain web sites and services (particularly ones critical or corporate interests) and guard against anti-competitive practices by effective monopolies.

US troops who criticised Iraq war strategy killed in Baghdad

· Article claimed Bush's policy was total failure
· Deaths reported on eve of presidential address

Suzanne Goldenberg in Washington
Thursday September 13, 2007
The Guardian

Two US soldiers who helped write a critique from the front saying America had "failed on every promise" in the war have been killed in Iraq, it was reported yesterday.

Staff Sergeant Yance Gray, 26, and Sergeant Omar Mora, 28, were among a group of seven soldiers serving in Iraq who wrote a piece excoriating America's conduct of the war. The piece was published in the New York Times last month.

The men were killed in Baghdad when the cargo truck in which they were riding rolled over, the Associated Press and local news outlets reported yesterday. The Pentagon had yet to confirm their deaths early yesterday.

The criticism caused a flurry of public debate because of the candour with which the men, all serving in the 82nd Airborne, described the situation in Iraq.

There was also speculation they could face severe penalties for being so openly critical of the war. Another US soldier, Private Scott Beauchamp, who wrote a shocking account in New Republic magazine about a soldier treating a piece of a child's skull as a souvenir, had his mobile phone and laptop confiscated.

"Four years into our occupation, we have failed on every promise," the seven wrote. "When the primary preoccupation of average Iraqis is when and how they are likely to be killed, we can hardly feel smug as we hand out care packages."

The peril of service in Iraq was underlined during the course of writing the article: one of the co-authors, a Ranger, was shot in the head and flown to the US for treatment.

The men directly challenged official claims of progress in the war, calling the debate in Washington "surreal".

They also skewered the military's only real success story from the war - much discussed this week in congressional hearings on the war - the decision by Sunni groups in Anbar province, west of Baghdad, to join the fight against al-Qaida. "Armed Sunni tribes have indeed become effective surrogates, but the enduring question is where their loyalties would lie in our absence," the men wrote.

"We operate in a bewildering context of determined enemies and questionable allies." [Continue Reading at]:

iPhone SimFree FREE tool (iUnlock) released...

IMPORTANT
Read this first before asking questions:

What we know:
- You can pretend to activate your iPhone and use it like an iPod touch with extra features.
- You can (after a normal or pretend activation) unlock your iPhone and use it with apparently a good deal of non-ATT GSM carriers.
- There is a GUI unlock program.
- After a successful unlock, you cannot use visual voicemail on any network other than ATT.
- After a successful unlock, you can make and receive calls, use the internet, and use the other programs on the iPhone.
- After a successful unlock, you need to change some preferences to use the T-Mobile EDGE network, but at least one user has claimed success.
- It has been tested to be working on the following carriers with no problems:

BASE / EPLUS (Germany)
Cellcom Israel (Israel)
CellONE (USA)
DiGi (Malaysia)
Hong Kong PCCW (China)
M-Budget Pre Paid (Switzerland)
Movistar (Spain)
O2 (Germany)
O2 (UK)
Oi (Brazil)
Rogers (Canada)
Si.mobil/Vodafone (Slovenia)
Starhub (Singapore)
Swisscom (Switzerland)
T-Mobile (USA)
Telcel (Mexico)
Telenor (Sweden)
Union Wireless Wyoming (USA)
Vodaphone (UK)

What we are not necessarily sure of:
- Will this functionality become disabled with a future software update? Possibly, given Apple's recent comments (read:today).
- What happens for users who do not currently have a data plan? Will the phone avoid getting online other than through hotspots if you don't change the preferences?
- If this unlock works on absolutely every GSM carrier.
- Which data plan you should add to your current service.

President Bush, You hid from the Vietnam War We Served. How dare you ask our children to fight, COWARD

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State." Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels

Vehicle may be Transporting Political Promises!

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." Hermann Goering, President of the Reichstag, Nazi Party, Luftwaffe Commander in Chief

Fraud in Uniform
If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier,
just so long as I'm the dictator.
- December 18, 2000 - George W. Bush

Modern dictators have usually come to power in times of emergency. Frequently they have seized power by coup, but some, most notably Benito Mussolini in Italy and Adolf Hitler in Germany achieved office as head of government by legal means (election or appointment), and once in office gained additional extraordinary powers.

Dressing up in Military garb is not unusual for Dynamic Leaders

The association between the dictator and the military is a very common one; many dictators take great pains to emphasize their connections with the military and often wear military uniforms.

IS CONGRESS A "GANG" UNDER S. 155?

Friday, June 23, 2006

[Note: This article is from June 2006 and may be indicative of, "Be careful what you wish/vote for."]

Sigmund Freud famously asked, "What does woman want?" He also famously asserted that "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

Downsize DC not-so-famously asks, "Is Congress a gang, and does it need to be abated?"

And we not-so-assertively assert that "Sometimes Congress could be a gang, depending on the future use and misuse made of Senate bill 155 -- the Gang Abatement and Prevention Act." And so could your motorcycle club, your chess club, your rose growing league, and potentially any association under the sun, including Downsize DC.

It all depends on what the meaning of is, is. Sigmund Freud's use of the word "sometimes" would seem to suggest that sometimes he thought a cigar was not just a cigar (Bill Clinton probably agrees), and Congress's historical relationship to the Constitutional words "Congress shall make no law," would seem to suggest that sometimes a club, or association, could also be a gang.

The definition of "gang" could depend on the answer to the question, "What does Congress want?" Congress clearly wants to have a "living Constitution" that can have any meaning at any time, with no actual words ever being changed. And they may also want a "living S. 155" so that any group could be labeled a gang, if the Feds felt a need to abate or prevent that group.

S. 155 is the brainchild of Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein of California. This bill has many different versions, under many different names. It seems to mutate faster than the HIV virus. It also, like most Congressional bills, shows a tendency toward promiscuity. It could be joined with another bill, with a different subject, at any time. And a major disease could result.

Dianne Feinstein, symbol of the worthless Beltway Democrat

by Glenn Greenwald

* Voted in FAVOR of funding the Iraq War without conditions;

* Voted in FAVOR of the Bush White House's FISA bill to drastically expand warrantless eavesdropping powers;

* Voted in FAVOR of condemning MoveOn.org;

* Cast the deciding vote in August on the Senate Judiciary Committee in FAVOR of the nomination of far right Bush nominee Leslie Southwick to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

In 2006, Feinstein not only voted in favor of extending the Patriot Act without any of the critical safeguards sought by Sen. Feingold, among others, but she was one of the most outspoken Democratic proponents arguing for its extension ("I have never been in favor of allowing any provisions of the Patriot Act to expire."). Also in 2006, she not only voted in favor of amending the Constitution to outlaw flag burning, but was, as she proudly described herself, "the main Democratic sponsor of this amendment." [;-) ATTENTION HOG MEMBERS (-;] S. 155 would make it a crime to belong to a group, or to recruit members to that group, as long as that group is called a gang. S. 155 would also do all sorts of other things, many of which are unknown to us because the bill is long, and we haven't had time to read it yet. WE ONLY JUST LEARNED ABOUT THIS BILL FROM SECRET INFORMERS LAST NIGHT! But remember, Congress won't read S. 155 either, before they attach it to "The Sweetness and Light and Everything Good Act" in the dead of night, and rush it to a vote.

Indeed, the gang known as the Senate Judiciary Committee is having a secret conspiratorial meeting (otherwise known as an executive session) right now, to consider S. 155. And rumor has it that they may join S. 155 to some kind of "we hate sex offenders" bill that no one will dare to vote against. There are so many things wrong with all of this ...

But there's more. S. 155 has all the makings of another RICO Act. RICO is the law that, among other things, allows the government to charge your property with a crime, and seize it under a civil procedure with lax standards of evidence. Do we really need another RICO Act?

In the movie "Little Caesar," the gang leader Rico, played by Edward G. Robinson, is shot down. As he lays dying he asks the great existential question, "Is this the end of Rico?" The answer is yes. Rico dies. The RICO Act, and all its clones, like S. 155, should suffer the same fate. Congress should not deal with lawless gangs by becoming a lawless gang. But that's exactly what they're doing. And the time is short to thwart this criminal conspiracy ...

We don't have time to mount one of our standard Electronic Advocacy campaigns. Phone calls are needed. Make the Senate Judiciary Gang nervous. If you see one of your Senators on the Gang Roster below, call them and tell them to oppose S. 155 and all its variants. If your Senator is not on this list then call the Senate Judiciary Gang Leader, Arlen Specter, and tell him to stop S. 155.

  • Make a note of what you want to say before you call.
  • Be polite yet firm.
  • When you're done, please email feedback at DownsizeDC.org and let us know how your call went.

Please do so now. It will be fun, and it will only take a minute. Here's the list of gang members ...

Box of Rain

Grateful Dead - Words by Robert Hunter, Music by Phil Lesh

Look out of any window, any morning, any evening, any day. Maybe the sun is shining, birds are winging, or rain is falling from a heavy sky.

What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? This is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago.

Walk out of any doorway, feel your way, feel your way like the day before. Maybe you'll find direction around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you.

What do you want me to do, to watch for you while you're sleeping? Well please don't be surprised when you find me dreaming too

Look into any eyes you find by you, you can see clear through to another day. I know it's been seen before through other eyes, on other days, while going home.

What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? It's all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago.

Walk into splintered sunlight, inch your way through dead dreams to another land. Maybe you're tired and broken, your tongue is twisted with words half spoken, and thoughts unclear.

What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through. A a box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through

Just a box of rain, wind, and water. Believe it if you need it, if you don't just pass it on. Sun and shower, wind and rain, in and out the window, like a moth before a flame

It's just a box of rain. I don't know who put it there. Believe it if you need it or leave it if you dare. But it's just a box of rain, or a ribbon for your hair. Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there.

Orozco: Man of Fire - PBS
Wednesday, September 19, 10 PM

Hello all,

Last year I edited a film portrait of the Mexican muralist, Jose Clemente Orozco. Orozco was one of the "Big Three" muralists who revived the art of fresco painting and re-introduced the concept of public art into the Americas. While most of his murals grace the walls of colonial-era buildings in Mexico, four of his pieces live in the US.

The film was produced by Laurie Coyle and Rick Tejada-Flores, and will screen on American Masters, PBS' showcase for American artists. PBS' screening of this film is noteworthy, as their coverage of Latino artists is woeful. The only other Latino artist to be profiled on this series was Diego Rivera. The Rivera film will be broadcast at 9 PM and immediately after the Orozco film at 10 PM.

I hope you enjoy the film.

Families cannot sue firm for Israel deaths

Ed Pilkington in New York
Wednesday September 19, 2007
The Guardian

The parents of Rachel Corrie, the US peace activist who was crushed to death four years ago in the then Israeli-occupied Gaza as she was protesting against the demolition of Palestinian homes, have been refused permission to sue the company which made the bulldozer that killed her.

On Monday a federal appeals court ruled that Caterpillar Inc, the Illinois-based company that has supplied several bulldozers used by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) in house demolitions in the occupied territories, could not be sued as to do so would bring the judiciary into conflict with the executive branch of the US government. If we don't have a clear vision of the military, if we don't stop extending our troops all around the world and nation building missions, then we're going to have a serious problem coming down the road, and I'm going to prevent that. Mr. Charlie Told You So

Fly_On_The_Wall wrote an article titled, Do Not Believe A Word of This, where the following was stated, in the section Spying on United States Citizens:

The first group of people who were spied on were politicians, their staff and associations. The second group were reporters and media personalities, in both talent and executive levels, their staff, and associations.

Associations include individuals outside of work and usually obtained from home phones or personal cell phones and based on a "ten tier" (Ten people most called outside work, followed by ten people of each of the original ten or a 'circle of 100'.).

With accumulated profiles (on 'all' these individuals) control was easy (We know who you buy your coke from, we know the porn sites you visit, we know which massage parlors you visit, we have pictures of what you did or did not do in the bedroom.) and reflects how this information can be abused. [If you are not quite sure what is being suggested, ask yourself why would reporters, so easily, roll over for Rove; et. al., and run false and/or misleading stories having the ability to control public thought and opinion; (Remembering: At one time, 82-87% of the United States people thought missiles could hit U.S. from Iraq; along with other W.M.D.)?] [Continue Reading At]:

If we don't have a clear vision of the military, if we don't stop extending our troops all around the world and nation building missions, then we're going to have a serious problem coming down the road, and I'm going to prevent that. - George W. Bush - Oct. 3, 2000

Let me tell you what else I'm worried about: I'm worried about an opponent who uses nation building and the military in the same sentence. See, our view of the military is for our military to be properly prepared to fight and win war and, therefore, prevent war from happening in the first place. George W. Bush Nov. 7, 2000

To the veteran, we owe gratitude — shown not just in words of tribute, but in acts of care and attention. As president, I will work with Congress to raise the standard of service — not just for veterans, but for our military retirees. All of them must be treated with the care they have been promised and the dignity they have earned. - George W. Bush 9/6/2000

America's veterans ask only that government honor its commitments as they honored theirs. They ask that their interests be protected, as they protected their country's interest in foreign lands. In all matters of concern to veterans — from health care to program funding — you have my pledge that those commitments will be kept. My administration will do all it can to assist our veterans and to correct oversights of the past. - George W. Bush May 28, 2001

My administration understands America's obligations not only to those who wear the uniform today, but to those who wore the uniform in the past — our veterans. - George W. Bush

Unfortunately, the deficit hawks in Mr. Bush's Office of Management and Budget are now ignoring this "obligation" (his word, not mine) because fixing the problem is too expensive. The Congressional Budget Office estimates it would cost approximately $2 billion in fiscal 2003. Of course, bloated deficits haven't stopped Congress from padding its own payrolls or stuffing 8,341 pork barrel projects, estimated by Citizens Against Government Waste at $20 billion, in this year's 13 appropriations bills.

What's worse, the Rumsfeld Pentagon doesn't seem to grasp that this punitive policy has an unquantifiable adverse effect on retention and combat effectiveness. Do we really want a military force led by risk- averse, desk-bound officers and NCOs who avoid the possibility of getting wounded because they don't want to financially punish their families?

President Bush has said, "Veterans are a priority for this administration." He had better make those in his administration believe it, because veterans also believe that old axiom: "You can't just talk the talk— You have to walk the walk."
- Col. Oliver North 7/28/2002

We've found the weapons of mass destruction. You know, we found biological laboratories...And we'll find more weapons as time goes on. But for those who say we haven't found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they're wrong. We found them. - George W. Bush

Donald Rumsfeld Calls Vietnam Veterans STUPID

Donald Rumsfeld blithely called Vietnam veterans "what was left" after the best and brightest found a way to dodge military service.

Statement by Veterans for America on Secretary Rumsfeld's Comments about Vietnam War Conscription

January 9, 2003

"As an organization founded by Vietnam War veterans seeking justice and fairness for all - whether military personnel or civilians - we are outraged by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's comments made at a January 7th DOD press conference when asked about the possibility of resurrecting the draft. Secretary Rumsfeld said troops from Vietnam War conscription, "added 'no value, no advantage, really, to the United States armed services…'"

As Vietnam veterans who served with conscripted soldiers, we find Secretary Rumsfeld's egregious slur a grave insult to the memory, sacrifice and valor of those who lost their lives, and, further, dismissive of the hundreds and thousands of lives, both in the U.S. and in Vietnam, who were devastatingly shattered by the Vietnam War.

We suggest that the Secretary choose his words much more carefully in the future, and be sensitive as to how they affect those who put their lives on the line for this country, whether drafted or enlisted. This is all the more critical as our country is on the eve of war with Iraq, and thousands of U.S. troops are again mobilized to potentially engage in battle."

Bobby Muller, President of Veterans for America

September 24, 1947: MJ-12 - We Are Not Alone ... Or Are We?

By Tony Long

1947: If the secret committee known as the Majestic 12 ever really existed, this is the day that the group was allegedly created by a memorandum from President Harry Truman.

If real, this shadowy coven of scientists, military brass and government officials came together in response to the Army's recovery of an alien spacecraft that crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947. Their purpose: to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Roswell incident and to maintain vigilance against further alien incursions. [Continue Reading At]:

Eyewitnesses said the number of monks and civilians demonstrating was more than 30,000, with some activists saying 100,000 were involved.

Some monks carried placards calling for better living conditions and national reconciliation, witnesses said.

The military government has so far showed restraint against the protests.

Monks are highly revered in Burma and any action against them would spark an outcry.

But there are fears of a repeat of 1988, when the last democracy uprising was crushed by the military and some 3,000 people were killed, correspondents say. [Continue Reading At]:

Blogs Team Up to Help Environment — for One Day

By Adrienne So

If a march on Washington is an effective form of political protest, how about a rally that takes place online? And what if the rally is organized by professionals instead of grassroots activists -- does that undercut its legitimacy as a form of political action? We'll find out on Oct. 15.

That is Blog Action Day, organized by Sydney-based blogger Collis Ta'eed, a day during which more than 5,000 bloggers worldwide have agreed to blog about a single topic: the environment. Signers-on to the Blog Action Day plan include such high-profile sites as Lifehacker and GigaOM.

" We chose the environment because it's pretty adaptable," said Ta'eed. "Next year we'll try tackling something a little more pressing, maybe not so popular." [Continue Reading At]:

'Chain of errors' led to 36-hour US nuclear blunder

By Stephen Foley

Nuclear warheads capable of unleashing the equivalent of 10 Hiroshima bombs were mistakenly flown across the United States by a bomber crew who thought they were dummies, and the terrifying security lapse was not discovered for almost 36 hours, it has been revealed.

The Pentagon is examining how so many vital checks and balances, painstakingly set out during the Cold War era, broke down to cause an incident that military personnel are calling one of the biggest mistakes in US Air Force history.

The flight last month was the first time in 40 years that nuclear bombs have been flown over US territory without specific authorisation from the top of the air force. Critics have argued that safety procedures have been disregarded as funds and expertise are diverted to new wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This Is Wrong: President Bush is a Terrorist

On November 21, 2001, George W. Bush said, If you harbor terrorists, you are terrorists. If you train or arm a terrorist, you are a terrorist. If you feed a terrorist or fund a terrorist, you're a terrorist, and you will be held accountable by the United States and our friends.

This article says, "Blackwater USA illegally smuggled into Iraq weapons that may have been sold on the black market and ended up in the hands of a U.S. designated terrorist organization" and if that is too many words, Blackwater USA is arming terrorists and Republican president, George W. Bush is funding them.

If the above article is true, George W. Bush, according to his own words, is a terrorist, should be impeached, and placed in jail !

US nuclear dump plan in danger after seismic shock

Fred Attewill
Tuesday September 25, 2007
Guardian Unlimited

The most expensive public works project in the US was today in disarray after it emerged that a planned giant nuclear dump would be located on a faultline.

Rock samples from deep within Yucca Mountain, in Nevada, showed that the fault runs directly beneath the site where the US federal government planned to store 70,000 tonnes of highly radioactive waste.

More than $8bn (£4bn) has already been spent on the $58bn project, which had been due to open in 2017, but the proposals - approved by George Bush in 2002 - may now have to be redrawn. [Continue Reading At]:

Warning Sign

Steve Bell cartoon
Steve Bell

The forced recall of 3,500 Marines is a clarion call warning to all Americans, and along with other distortions of deployment practices, is now, in effect, a form of reviving the draft.

Listening to the President, Vice President Cheney, the various neoconservative policy pushers, their vision appears to be a vision of endless and permanent world war, with expanding and ever more dangerous fields of combat, when we do not even have the troops strength to meet our commitments today.

Having been involved in intelligence and military matters for more than two decades, this much is clear: we cannot sustain our commitments today; with any additional wars to fight, we will be left with only two choices: either inadequate forces creating more Iraqs, or adequate forces that can only be maintained through a revival of the draft, no matter what it is called. That is the fact.

When these neoconservative voices rush to the airwaves to proclaim the wars they would like (others) to fight, Democrats, Republicans and all in the media should ask:

If you want war with Iran, where will you get the troops, and will you bring back the draft?

If you want war with Syria, where will you get the troops, and will you bring back the draft?

If you want war with North Korea, where will you get the troops, and will you bring back the draft?

It is high time and long overdue that the United States resumes its role of world diplomatic and political leadership and brings in people of world-wide credibility and stature to at least test the waters for game-changing diplomacy.

For those who prefer the course of war, we must all ask, on every occasion: for the wars you would like to fight, where will you get the troops, and are you prepared to bring back the draft?

On the Liberation of Iraq
Passover 2003 for Albert Nieman
Allen Cohen April 18, 2003

Ali, the boy with no hands,
collateral damage
in a barrage from hell,
wants to commit suicide
if Americans can't replace
the hands they burned into oblivion.

In the birthplace of Abraham
in the Garden of Eden
where writing began
where the first laws
were inscribed into stone
America has sacrificed
libraries and museums of antiquities
while protecting the oil ministry
for its records of oil fields
and the Ministry of the Interior
where the secret police dwelled
with their juicy information on every one.

The barbarians have invaded
and it is called liberation
killing mercilessly
but never counting the bodies.

History recalls the Romans slaughtering
500,000 Carthaginians to dominate
trade routes in the Mediterranean.
But the Pentagon won't count
the dead and wounded in the Iraq carnage.

It might frighten the free people
of America and upset Arabs and Europeans.
It might make some patriots
embarrassed, remorseful or shocked
by the horror of war - the burnt bodies
severed limbs, and decapitations,
the children wounded and orphaned,
the mothers bereft of their children and husbands
even the soldiers shoveled in heaps into mass graves.

Then there might be a call
beginning as a whisper and rising
to a shout and then a prayer
for the end of war
for the healing of wounds
for truces and treaties
for nuclear disarmament
for the beating of guns
into food and shelter and medicine.

Then we will awake
from the nightmare of history
and overthrow the yolk of oil and empire.

But there I go again
dreaming of a new paradigm,
an alternative universe
expecting miracles
like Moses and Aaron in Egypt
and Tom Paine in America
and Gandhi in India,
like the creation itself
and the consciousness
that imagines these visions.

Next Year - in a new transfigured world.

The Right-Wing Crackdown on Dissent

by Joshua Katz

[snip]

The right-wing crackdown on dissent in the universities has destroyed the American university as a place where ideas may be freely discussed. We cannot fight to save the university – it is already gone. We must reclaim it, and we must do so in an entirely non-violent way. We must fight only through the power of ideas, so that if we win, our victory will be moral, and pure. A tainted victory here is truly a defeat – one cannot forge a place for ideas in a violent manner, in a way that denies the power of ideas. However, we cannot take our places in the battle of ideas as defenders of a status quo against those who challenge it – we must realize that we lost once, that the university is gone and that we are trying to rebuild it. Let me emphasize that, on our side, we cannot raise one fist in anger, let alone spill any blood for our cause. This is not the type of battle we face – we need to proceed on the assumption that the most important thing in the world is the power of an idea. We must proceed on this assumption because it is true. [Continue Reading At]:

You don't vote? Then shut up.

If you choose not to vote, then you endorse everything that's going on. Maybe that's OK with you.

by bbstucco

Lysander wrote a post describing his experiences with a girlfriend who couldn't understand why he didn't vote.

It's a well-written post, and worth your time if you missed it. The comments were, for me, incredibly disheartening, because so many people piled on the "Yeah, I don't vote either. Who cares?" blather and it made my ears hurt. And not the good hurt you get from listening to AC/DC too loud or drinking too much red wine, but the bad hurt that means someone, somewhere has struck a nerve.

I started to write a comment. Then saw that it was really, friggin' long. And decided it should be a post in and of itself.

This is important.

Voting is a sore subject with me. I work the polls. I'm one of those guys sitting there with the big smile on his face and excited as all get-out that you've shown up to vote and doing all I can to help you vote. Bending over friggin' backwards if I have to. A lot of the comments on Lysander's post make me incredibly sad. Is politics broken? Sure. You know why? Because they don't want you to vote. That's it. They really don't want you to vote. They want you to accept the status quo, and far too many of you do just that.

Our Founding Fathers gave us, the people, a way to fix government when it is broken. The vote. They never expected people wouldn't vote. For them, running away from a monarchy, the idea of a citizen's right to choose their own destiny was paramount. [Continue Reading At]:

Diplomats accuse Bush of attempting to derail UN climate conference

· President goes ahead with own environment meeting
· Fear that US will again reject limit on emissions

by Ewen MacAskill in Washington
The Guardian
Thursday September 27 2007

President George Bush was yesterday criticised by diplomats for attempting to derail a UN initiative on climate change by pressing ahead with his own conference, which starts in Washington today.

One European diplomat described the US meeting as a spoiler for a UN conference planned for Bali in December. Another, who spoke to the Guardian on condition of anonymity, claimed that the US conference was merely a way of deflecting pressure from other world leaders who had asked at the G8 summit this year for the US to make concessions on global warming.

They predicted that Mr Bush, who is to address the meeting tomorrow, will stress the need to make technological advances that can help combat climate change but will reject mandatory caps on emissions. [Continue Reading At]:

Blues Festival featured local favorites

Written by Thurman Watts
Wednesday, 25 July 2007

Summer Of Love Legend Mike Wilhelm and Lake Blues All-Stars featuring Jim Williams and Jon Hopkins were an early crowd favorite on Thursday night. Their set included Robert Johnson's "Love In Vain" and B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby."

Hopkins, the "Barrister of Bass," did a fine rendition of Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man," playing bass and harmonica simultaneously.

A female vocalist named Neon guested on "The Thrill is Gone" and "I'm Tore Down." When not singing she worked the crowd admirably and did great percussion work.

Jim Williams put the great Mike Wilhelm's career in perspective by mentioning that Wilhelm was Jerry Garcia's favorite guitar player. Wilhelm interjected that he was playing though an amp that he bought from Garcia. (On a side note, both Mike Wilhelm and Betty Mae Fikes were pictured in recent issues of Rolling Stone Magazine.)

Wilhelm displayed great virtuosity and chops in his note selection during his solos. The band closed with "Red House' and "Further On Up The Road" to a great ovation by the crowd. Great set!

John Sinclair - Now John Sinclair - 1969

Detroit, Michigan, United States
Monday, Aug 13, 2007 14:16

(Detroit, Monday, August 13, 2007)—Detroit has been an extremely depressed community since the early 1970s when the price of gasoline suddenly doubled and then kept on increasing, and the Japanese and European auto companies started making the small, economical cars that the American automakers refused to manufacture. Now, in the first decade of the 21st century, things have gotten even worse, as evidenced by the following analysis recently offered by the Detroit News:

MICHIGAN MANUFACTURING JOB LOSSES PUT AT 170,000

As the state continues to bleed manufacturing jobs, spurred by a decline in sales by domestic carmakers, Census data released today puts a number to the loss: an estimated 170,000 jobs from 2000 to 2006.

Most of the decline is directly tied to the decline in Big Three auto sales, experts say. The loss of factory jobs has been a big part of the reason Michigan incomes have steadily dropped for the past few years.

Adjusted for inflation, the state median income is down 12 percent since 1999, as well-paid factory workers are forced to take lower-paying jobs.

— Detroit News, September 12, 2007

It’s hard to tell that there’s a depression going on at Tiger Stadium, however. (They want you to call it Comerica Park, after the bank, but I haven’t been offered anything to advertise for the fucking bank and it’ll always be Tiger Stadium to me). Like they say in the 6th Ward, a lotta people don’t know that I’m a big Tigers fan, but I’ve been with them ever since my grandma taught me how to keep score while watching the games on her little 9” TV set around 1952, and I’m following their struggle to repeat as American League champions pretty closely.

Tonight I’ve got a night off in Detroit and Adam Brook has hooked me up with our pal Matt Abel so I can take in a game with the Oakland A’s at the current shrine of truth and beauty on Woodward Avenue Downtown. It’s great to be back at the ballpark even as the Tigers drop another game under the lights.

After the game I walk over to Greektown to join the Milton Hale Monday night jam session at the Jazz Loft and have a great time, as usual.

Mugabe accuses Bush of duplicity

THE President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has accused the US President, George Bush, of "rank hypocrisy" for lecturing him on human rights and likened the Guantanamo Bay prison to a concentration camp.

"His hands drip with innocent blood of many nationalities," Mr Mugabe said in a fiery speech to the United Nations General Assembly. "He kills in Iraq. He kills in Afghanistan. And this is supposed to be our master on human rights?" [Continue Reading At]:

Web Censorship

“Introduced on Thursday, the bill--titled the Communications Legislation Amendment (Crime or Terrorism Related Internet Content) Bill 2007--would empower the federal police to alter the "blacklist" of sites that are currently prohibited by the Communications and Media Authority.

The list currently includes pornography and "offensive material." However, under the amendment, federal police would be able to add other sites to the list, including content that the AFP Commissioner "has reason to believe...is crime- or terrorism-related content."

The definition of material that may be liable for censorship includes Internet content that "encourages, incites or induces," "facilitate(s)" or "has, or is likely to have, the effect of facilitating" a crime” [Continue Reading At]:

The Unconstitutional Patriot Act

by: liberaljournal
Fri Sep 28, 2007 at 01:11:23 AM EDT

Provisions of the Patriot Act were held unconstitutional by the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon. Here's my summary of the case (all other claims regarding the plaintiff's detention were settled to):

Findings of Fact:

Fingerprints taken in connection from the 2004 Madrid bombings were sent to the U.S., who compared them against their existing FBI database. No match was found. Higher resolution pictures of the fingerprints were then sent. A new search was conducted and turned up 20 potential matches to one of the fingerprints. A score was assigned based on how closely it matched the original. [Continue Reading At]:
