The War on Women

Republicans in the House of Representatives are mounting an assault on women's health and freedom that would deny millions of women access to affordable contraception and life-saving cancer screenings and cut nutritional support for millions of newborn babies in struggling families. And this is just the beginning.

The budget bill pushed through the House last Saturday included the defunding of Planned Parenthood and myriad other cuts detrimental to women. It's not likely to pass unchanged, but the urge to compromise may take a toll on these programs. And once the current skirmishing is over, House Republicans are likely to use any legislative vehicle at hand to continue the attack.

The egregious cuts in the House resolution include the elimination of support for Title X, the federal family planning program for low-income women that provides birth control, breast and cervical cancer screenings, and testing for H.I.V. and other sexually transmitted diseases. In the absence of Title X's preventive care, some women would die. The Guttmacher Institute, a leading authority on reproductive health, says a rise in unintended pregnancies would result in some 400,000 more abortions a year.

An amendment offered by Representative Mike Pence, Republican of Indiana, would bar any financing of Planned Parenthood. A recent sting operation by an anti-abortion group uncovered an errant employee, who was promptly fired. That hardly warrants taking aim at an irreplaceable network of clinics, which uses no federal dollars in providing needed abortion care. It serves one in five American women at some point in her lifetime.

The House resolution would slash support for international family planning and reproductive health care. And it would reimpose the odious global “gag” rule, which forbids giving federal money to any group that even talks about abortions. That rule badly hampered family planning groups working abroad to prevent infant and maternal deaths before President Obama lifted it.

(Mr. Obama has tried to act responsibly. He has rescinded President George W. Bush's wildly overreaching decision to grant new protections to health providers who not only will not perform abortions, but also will not offer emergency contraception to rape victims or fill routine prescriptions for contraceptives.)

In negotiations over the health care bill last year, Democrats agreed to a scheme intended to stop insurance companies from offering plans that cover abortions. Two bills in the Republican House would go even further in denying coverage to the 30 percent or so of women who have an abortion during child-bearing years.

One of the bills, offered by Representative Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania, has a provision that would allow hospitals receiving federal funds to refuse to terminate a pregnancy even when necessary to save a woman's life.

Beyond the familiar terrain of abortion or even contraception, House Republicans would inflict harm on low-income women trying to have children or who are already mothers.

Their continuing resolution would cut by 10 percent the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, better known as WIC, which serves 9.6 million low-income women, new mothers, and infants each month, and has been linked in studies to higher birth weight and lower infant mortality.

The G.O.P. bill also slices $50 million from the block grant supporting programs providing prenatal health care to 2.5 million low-income women and health care to 31 million children annually. President Obama's budget plan for next year calls for a much more modest cut.

These are treacherous times for women's reproductive rights and access to essential health care. House Republicans mistakenly believe they have a mandate to drastically scale back both even as abortion warfare is accelerating in the states. To stop them, President Obama's firm leadership will be crucial. So will the rising voices of alarmed Americans.

How Much Democracy Can Trillions of Stolen Tax Dollars Buy?

The War On Waste

Defense Department Cannot Account For 25% Of Funds — $2.3 Trillion

January 29, 2002

LOS ANGELES, (CBS) On Sept. 10, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld declared war. Not on foreign terrorists, "the adversary's closer to home. It's the Pentagon bureaucracy," he said.

He said money wasted by the military poses a serious threat.

"In fact, it could be said it's a matter of life and death," he said.

Rumsfeld promised change but the next day – Sept. 11-- the world changed and in the rush to fund the war on terrorism, the war on waste seems to have been forgotten.

Just last week President Bush announced, "my 2003 budget calls for more than $48 billion in new defense spending."

More money for the Pentagon, CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales reports, while its own auditors admit the military cannot account for 25 percent of what it spends.

"According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions," Rumsfeld admitted.

$2.3 trillion — that's $8,000 for every man, woman and child in America. To understand how the Pentagon can lose track of trillions, consider the case of one military accountant who tried to find out what happened to a mere $300 million.

"We know it's gone. But we don't know what they spent it on," said Jim Minnery, Defense Finance and Accounting Service.

Minnery, a former Marine turned whistle-blower, is risking his job by speaking out for the first time about the millions he noticed were missing from one defense agency's balance sheets. Minnery tried to follow the money trail, even crisscrossing the country looking for records.

"The director looked at me and said 'Why do you care about this stuff?' It took me aback, you know? My supervisor asking me why I care about doing a good job," said Minnery.

He was reassigned and says officials then covered up the problem by just writing it off.

"They have to cover it up," he said. "That's where the corruption comes in. They have to cover up the fact that they can't do the job."

The Pentagon's Inspector General "partially substantiated" several of Minnery's allegations but could not prove officials tried "to manipulate the financial statements."

Twenty years ago, Department of Defense Analyst Franklin C. Spinney made headlines exposing what he calls the "accounting games." He's still there, and although he does not speak for the Pentagon, he believes the problem has gotten worse.

"Those numbers are pie in the sky. The books are cooked routinely year after year," he said.

Another critic of Pentagon waste, Retired Vice Admiral Jack Shanahan, commanded the Navy's 2nd Fleet the first time Donald Rumsfeld served as Defense Secretary, in 1976.

In his opinion, "With good financial oversight we could find $48 billion in loose change in that building, without having to hit the taxpayers."

Bush demands Mid-East democracy

President George W Bush has deplored the "freedom deficit" in the Middle East and said the United States must remain focused on the region "for decades".

November 6, 2003

BBC NEWS, "Our commitment to democracy is being tested in the Middle East," he said in a televised Washington speech in defence of US democracy.

Mr Bush said dictators in Iraq and Syria had "left a legacy of torture, oppression, misery and ruin".

Turning to Iran, he warned that "the regime in Tehran must heed the democratic demands of the Iranian people, or lose its last claim to legitimacy".

But some governments in the region were "beginning to see the need for change", he said, citing Morocco, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Yemen.

He also stressed that "Islam is consistent with democratic rule" in his speech to the National Endowment for Democracy in Washington.

He said that to say Islam and democracy were incompatible was "cultural condescension".

The BBC's Rob Watson in Washington says the speech may come to be seen as a defining moment in the Bush presidency.

Mr Bush compared his drive for global democracy with the legacy of his Republican predecessor Ronald Reagan, whose tough stance against communism helped democracy to take root in Eastern Europe in the 1980s.

Creating a free Iraq

The lack of freedom in many Middle Eastern countries today had terrible consequences for the peoples of those countries, he said, blaming it for poverty and the oppression of women.

"Iraqi democracy will succeed, and that success will send forth the news, from Damascus to Tehran, that freedom can be the future of every nation," he said.

"The establishment of a free Iraq at the heart of the Middle East will be a watershed event in the global democratic revolution."

He warned that it would be reckless to accept the status quo, so the US had adopted a new "forward" strategy in the Middle East.

"The good and capable people of the Middle East all deserve responsible leadership," he said.

"For too long, many people in that region have been victims and subjects. They deserve to be active citizens."

Democratic first steps?

Mr Bush warned that if freedom remained stifled in the Middle East the region would remain "a place of stagnation, resentment and violence ready for export".

He praised efforts by some governments in the region, but singled out others for words of warning or encouragement.

Egypt: "Has shown the way toward peace in the Middle East, and now should show the way toward democracy in the Middle East"

Iran: "The regime must heed the democratic demands of the Iranian people, or lose its last claim to legitimacy"

Iraq and Syria: Dictators "left a legacy of torture, oppression, misery, and ruin"

Jordan: "Held historic elections this summer"

Kuwait: "Has a directly elected national assembly"

Palestinians: "Palestinian leaders who block and undermine democratic reform, and feed hatred and encourage violence are not leaders at all. They're the main obstacles to peace..."

Saudi Arabia: "The government is taking first steps toward reform, including a plan for gradual introduction of elections"

Yemen: "Has a multi-party political system"

Outside the Middle East, he also said the American commitment to democracy was being tested "in countries like Cuba, Burma, North Korea and Zimbabwe".

And he said China now had just "a sliver, a fragment of liberty".

Bush Library Raises $100 Million in 100 Days

May 4, 2009

By Michael Weisskopf and Michael Duffy / Washington

George W. Bush has often said that historians will vindicate his presidency. And since he left office, he's been moving fast to give them the tools.

Longtime financial backers of the 43rd President have raised more than $100 million for a presidential library at Southern Methodist University in Dallas that will house his official papers, sources close to Bush told TIME. Much of the money was collected in the 100 days or so since Bush left the White House, a pace much faster than that of his recent predecessors. At least so far, none of it has come from overseas, the sources said.

The Bush fundraising effort, compared with that of his predecessor, is off to a brisk start. Bill Clinton's library planners had hoped to receive pledges of $100 million within a year of the end of his presidency, but a pardons scandal delayed that achievement for another year, said Skip Rutherford, who chaired the Clinton library committee.

Unburdened by campaign finance regulations, former Presidents traditionally raise money for their libraries the old-fashioned way: by meeting or calling a few dozen very wealthy benefactors and asking for large sums, often on the order of $5 million to $10 million each.

The Bush effort involves that approach, sources said, but in other ways is organized much like a modern political campaign. A national finance committee has been created with 100 co-chairs placed in every state. Some of Bush's oldest and biggest financial backers form a board of directors for the George W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation, chaired by former Bush Commerce Secretary and Texas oilman Donald L. Evans. Members include Los Angeles investment banker Brad Freeman; Dallas hotel developer and former Bush ambassador to Costa Rica Mark Langdale; and Cincinnati-based businessman and Bush ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein Mercer Reynolds.

Foundation president Langdale said names of contributors will not be released because some donors prefer anonymity. He also would not disclose the exact total raised thus far. But other sources reported commitments totaling more than a third of the $300 million projected for the George W. Bush Presidential Center, which will include a museum and research institute to be built on a 25-acre parcel of SMU.

Along with writing a memoir — something Bush has also begun in recent months — financing and building a suitable presidential library has been the initial focus of nearly every President who left the White House since Harry Truman. The historically fast pace of Bush's fundraising has been all the more remarkable for taking place during a period of economic contraction. "He's struck a very positive nerve among a lot of financial sources across the country," said J. French Hill, a Little Rock banker and major Bush campaign bundler who leads the fundraising effort in Arkansas.

Groundbreaking for the library is set for November of next year; organizers hope to dedicate and open the doors in early 2013.

Langdale said the Bush center will not be used to "defend or promote something that he did in the past" but will offer a record to help future generations learn about what happened during a presidency, so they make better decisions." "History will judge," he said.

Hang Forest by Matt Venuti

While You Were Asleep

Dear Citizens of the World,

I believe the time has come to reveal to you some of the perplexities you have faced in recent decades.

It is important to understand some of these things, so that you might know how to behave in the New Order now taking shape on this planet you call Earth. We want you to be able to become fully involved and integrated into our new society. After all, doing this is for your best interest.

First of all, it is best if you understand some of our purposes so that you may more fully cooperate. I cannot tell you the hard times you will face if you resist us.

We have ways of dealing with resisters and you are being told this now, since it is much too late to turn things around. The days of putting a stop to us have long since past.

We have full control of the earth and it's finances, along with control of major corporate media propaganda, and there is simply no way any nation or power can defeat us.

We have eyes in every level of government in every nation of the world. We know what is being planned, for our ears and eyes are ever present. State secrets are fully known to us.

U.S. corporate media are constantly accused of lying for their government by everyone; including foreign governments.

Oh, you silly people, of course we lie. In this way we can keep the people unbalanced and always facing controversy, which is very helpful to us. Have you not seen the talk show spectacles on FOX?

Some of you believe we are the liberals and the good people are the conservatives. In reality, both serve our purposes. Each camp merely serves with the stamp of our approval, but they are not allowed to present real issues.

For example, consider BP's Oil Spill. By creating controversy on all levels, no one knows what to do. So, in all of this confusion, we go ahead and accomplish what we want with no hindrance. If fact, we teach this within a fraternity in one of your nation's older universities.

Consider President George W. Bush of the United States. Even though he regularly broke every known check on his power, no one could stop him, and he went ahead, and did whatever we wanted him to do.

Congress and 'The People' had no power to stop him. He did what we wanted, since he knew, if he did not, because of his rather dark character, we could have him removed in an instant. I'd say it was, "Rather brilliant strategy on our part?"

You cannot take us to court because you can't see us and the courts are our servants as well. We run everything and you do not know who to attack. I must say this invisible hand is wonderfully devised without any known historical precedent on this scale. We rule the world and the world cannot even find out who is ruling them.

This is truly a wonderful thing. In our corporate media, we present before you exactly what it is we want you to do. Then, as if in a flash you, our little servants, obey!

We can send American or European troops to wherever we like, whenever we like, and for whatever purpose we like, and you dutifully go about our business and don't even look up to see the poisons we are spraying on you in the form of chemtrails. How much more evidence do you need?

We can make you desire to leave your homes and family and go to war merely at our command. We only need to present some nonsense to you from the president's desk, or on the evening news, and we can get you all fired up to do whatever we like. You can do nothing but what we put before you.

Your Vain Resistance

When any of you seek to resist us, we have ways of making you look ridiculous with corporate media, as we have done with all your movements to show the world how impotent any resistance is.

Look at what we did near Waco. Did the Davidian's little store of weapons help them?

We have generously taxed you and used that money to make such sophisticated weapons you can in no way compete. Your own money has served to forge the chains we bind you with; especially, since we are in control of all money.

Some of you think you may escape by buying some land in the country and growing a garden. Let me remind you that you still pay us ground rent. Oh, you may call it property taxes, but it still goes to us.

You see, you need money no matter what you do. If you fail to pay your ground rent to us, we will take your land and sell it to someone who will pay us. Do you think we cannot do this? And with your ground rent we pay for the indoctrination of your children in the public schools we have set up.

We want them to grow up well trained into the system of our thinking. Your children will learn what we want them to learn, when we want them to learn it, and you pay for it through your ground rent.

Those funds are also used for other projects we have in mind, like drilling for oil in the Gulf, and our contractors are paid handsomely for their work.

You may doubt that we own your children, or have such control, but you will find that we do. We can declare that you abuse your children, when you spank them, and have them confiscated. If they do not show up for school indoctrination, we can accuse you of neglect, thereby, giving them to us.

Your children are not yours. They are ours. You must inoculate them, you must bring them to our hospitals, if we decree, or we will take them from you. You know this and we know this.

Through our electronic commerce and iDevices we are able to see where you are, what you are buying, and how much you have to buy things with. Where do you suppose we come up with our monthly financial statistics?

Through the Internet, Telecoms, and other sources we can even know how you think and what you say. It is not especially important to us what you believe as long as you do what we say.

Your beliefs are nonsense anyway. But if you think you have a following, and we perceive that you might be somewhat dangerous to our agenda, we have ways to deal with you. Do you remember how we used Telecoms to spy for us?

We have a Pandora's box of mischief with which to snare you. We can have you in court so long, you will never get out. We can easily drain away all your assets over one pretext or another. We have an inexhaustible fund with which to draw from to pay our lawyers.

These lawyers are paid by you in the form of taxes. You do not have this vast supply of wealth. We know how to divide and conquer. Have we not brought down rulers of countries through our devices?

Do you think your tiny self will be any match for us?

Your Vain Organizations

Let us consider your religions, tea parties, and "moral majority."

The "moral majority" is neither moral nor is it in the majority. We have delighted to use this wet noodle of a movement to make ridiculous the Christian faith.

The silly men who run that organization always end up with egg on their faces. We have always put them in defense of themselves, as we have so successfully done with the NRA.

We can make it seem, by our corporate media propaganda, that the National Rifle Association is actually the new Al Qaeda.

Have we not turned the American conservative movement on its ear? If it serves our purposes we can use the conservatives to turn the liberals on their ear.

It makes no difference to us but it serves to make you believe there are two sides struggling for their particular position. This helps to make things seem fair and free, since everyone has a voice.

Actually, there is only one side now with all kinds of masks on, but you are unable to penetrate our purposes.

You see, we can do whatever we like and you can do nothing about it.

Does it not seem reasonable that you should simply obey and serve us? Otherwise, you get eaten up in the resistance you suppose that will liberate you.

You cannot be liberated ... Try to Imagine how you can.

We supply fuel for your cars and we can turn it off whenever we like, claiming there is some sort of fuel shortage. What if your car breaks down? You cannot get parts for it without us.

We supply all money you use and at any whim of our desire, we can stop the money supply, or ... cause a complete crash all together.

We can then order the president to declare all money worthless and that we will have to have new money. All of your stashes of cash will go up in smoke in an instant.

Don't you need food?

If necessary, we can cause a trucker's strike which would stop deliveries of food to your local store. We can starve you whenever we like. You only have food because we have provided it for you from our 'supermarket to the world' table.

During the great depression we controlled food and heaped mountains of it behind fences, to let it rot.

The hungry were then made to work in our labor camps, even though there was enough, and more, to feed them. Do you really think you can beat us?

You say you will hoard gold coins so you will still have money in the time of the crash. We can simply pass a law which outlaws the possession of gold as we have done in the past.

If we find gold in your possession, we would simply confiscate it, and put you in prison for breaking the law.

While in prison, or at one of our recently reconstructed FEMA camps, you would be required to work for one of our prison industries. We have so formed a picture of the labor camps in our prisons, these days, that no one seems to object to them.

We tell people that murderers should pay for their own keep.

No one seems to consider that we have the power to put tomato growers in prison.

We can pass laws that prohibit gardens, and then make up some scientific reason why you may only buy food from our sources.

If someone sees you growing tomatoes, they will report you to us, and then we will have you in our fields, working for us.

Oh, silly, stoned out of your minds, people, there is no escape for you, for since long before you were born, we were planning your capture.

Your teachers and ministers have been forming your thoughts for us, for generations now. You have been tricked into taking corporate drugs that were intended for short term usage, which have turned you into a nation of controlled mood zombies, and you have no idea how to pull out of our influence, short of suicide. Go ahead and commit suicide, it will only help us to deal with excessive population.

You cannot hurt us, find us, or even imagine what we are up to. I am throwing you these few crumbs only so that you may, if you have a little good sense, obey and follow our orders.

Your Controlled Mind

We run Hollywood. The movies such as Terminator and Armageddon, along with a great host of others, were simply created to get you thinking according to our directions.

You have been made to delight in violence, so that when we send you off to kill some bad man, we have put before you, you move without a whimper.

We have placed violent arcade games in your malls to prepare your young children's minds in the art of battle.

We have made you view our armies and police as the good forces, which cause you to submit to things that were unthinkable a few decades ago.

We totally orchestrated 9/11 and blamed it on somebody else using our corporate media and through our lobbies, Congress.

Think about it ... Congress spent about 60 million (60,000,000) of your income tax dollars, to discover if Monica swallowed (a little pre-reality show we dreamed up) and a little over 3 million dollars on the 9/11 Commission because we did not want an investigation of secret energy meetings or 9/11 to surface. See how easy it is to trick you?

Our artful programs are all designed to help you to submit and help the New World Order. Star Trek, and other such creations, have taught you to simply: obey orders from new international rulers.

Oh, silly people, you thought you were being entertained, while you were actually being educated. Dare I use the words, "brainwashed" or "mind control?" By the way, have you ever seen Star Wars?

What a masterpiece of mental manipulation. Humans confer with nondescript beasts of all shapes and sizes, and they confer in English.

I wonder where those space beasts learned English. Oh, the simple-ness of the mind of the citizen, for sh-he never considers sh-he is being taken into fairyland.

We placed advertisements for Star Wars everywhere you go. They were in WalMart, K-Mart, Taco Bell and a host of our institutions of corporate commerce.

There is something we want you to learn from Star Wars. Or, perhaps it could be said, there is something we do not want you to learn. Either way, we will have what we want in the whole affair.

Of course, to keep you off guard, we have instructed our elected officials to appear to be correcting the evil of our violence. Presidents often speak against violence in Hollywood movies.

This will not solve the problem, but it will make the people believe the problem is being worked on.

Sex and violence are the very best powers to use, to help us gain our advantage. How the people loathe to give up their sex and violence, so we place all they want before them. In this way, we keep them so occupied they do not have the integrity or brain-power to deal with the really important matters which are left entirely in our hands.

President Bush was very helpful to us. We knew of what character he was before we placed him as president. Exposing him was very helpful in adjusting the moral habits of the youth downward and this is too, our advantage.

Even more agreeable to us were the vain efforts of those who thought they could remove him against our will. He was useful to us and we control who is removed or not removed.

Excuse me if I seem to be mocking your system of beliefs, but they are rather outdated. Have you no eyes to see your vain liberties and your righteous pontifications are nothing before us? You can only do what we say you can do.

We remove presidents when we are ready and the leader we set up will be there until it serves us to have another. At that time we place our purposed politicians before you, and you vote for what we want.

In that way we give you the vain voting exercise in the belief you had something to do with placing your politicians in office.

Our Unfathomable Mysteries

Our recent war in Iraq had many purposes to it, but we do not speak of these things openly. We let the talk show hosts blather all sorts of nonsense, but none of it touches the core.

First of all, there is a wealth of natural resources on the planet we must have complete control of.

Iraq has large supplies of oil in its soil and oil is very helpful to our regime. Also, it suits us to keep this oil out of the hands of potential enemies.

For those who have not been helpful in getting these resources into our hands, we simply make things difficult until submission. Does anyone recall the word "sanction?"

We can reduce any proud nation to the level of humility we require from all people. For example if Zionist Israel does not sufficiently humble itself, we will take them to the world court, and have them charged with "war crimes." We made up that term; rather ingenious, don't you think?

How could there be such a thing as a war crime? The very nature of war is that the rules are off. It is so entertaining to watch the nations try to fight war according to the laws we have placed before them.

The only war crime there really is, involves the crime of being against us.

Anyone against us is violating our law and, as you have seen, when someone is for us, we do not care what they do. Was not Ariel Sharon a self professed murdering terrorist who tortured and horribly killed many of his enemies women and children? We made a hero of him. And what about the Bush administration? Are any of them in jail? No, they are still working for us and on your televisions, getting paid big salaries.

We observe no laws when it comes to war. We do what we want, when we want, and where we want.

We can starve nations to death, ruin civilizations, and commit other horrors for which we take our enemies to court. Look at one of our examples.

We bomb Iraq out of its wits. We can bomb rock throwing Palestinians out of their homes, poison their rivers and streams, turn off their electricity, making a grand crisis, and then we masterfully make it appear it is the fault of Islam.

It is the same way we made our inferno at Waco look like Mr. Koresh's fault. Then there was our chief villain, Saddam with all of his non existent weapons of mass destruction.

Bad men are a dime a dozen, we can conjure one up whenever it suits us, and ultimately, this is really quite funny when you think of it.

I am not one who is usually given to 'this sort' of humor, but I do catch myself laughing sometimes at the absolute absurdity of the notions we place before you, that you readily accept.

Do you wonder that the leaders of the world tremble at our presence? They know they have no power except the power we give them.

We have no fear of Russia or China, for we are already in full control of their system of things.

China knows we can freeze any number of their corporations in America and all of its capitol at the stroke of a pen. We use nations for what we want to use them for. Everyone knows that they must yield to us or die.

Fortunately, we have had a few resisters, such as Saddam, that have been helpful in showing world leaders what we will do to them if they do not submit.

There is only glory in following our purposes and doing what we say. If one does not, there will be a sad and tragic result.

I would have spared you of such an end, but, then, again, if you are not spared, it is of no consequence to us. We will use you to alleviate some of the overpopulation problem.

Your Silly Rebellions Against Us

Some of you have thought you could stop us by placing a bomb in one of our abortion clinics or in a government building.

Silly souls! How can that hurt us? All that does is give us an example to use so that we might place more controls, and heavy burdens, on the population.

We love it when you rebel and blow something up. You are our reason for making more laws against all those things, which might contribute to your freedom from us.

If someone did not blow something up on occasion, we would have no justification in placing more laws on you. Can't you see how impossible it is for you to resist us? The more you wiggle, the more we squeeze.

It is said our kingdom is the kingdom of money, but I must confess we are rulers of a kingdom of non-money.

You must see the humor in that statement. We have given you a piece of paper or some numbers on a computer screen that we have termed money.

It is backed up by nothing and proven by nothing, but what we say it is. We create it from nothing, we print it, we loan it, we give it its value, we take its value away. All things that have to do with money are in our hands.

Think of it, what is it that you can do against us without money? If you try to resist, we can cancel your credit or freeze your accounts. Your cash is easily confiscated.

We have made so many rules in the realm of living that you cannot live without money.

Camp on government land and you must move in two weeks. You cannot grow much of a garden in two weeks.

Many of our wilderness trails are entered by permit only.

We have passed laws that do not allow you to live in trailers over a certain period without moving to another location.

Have you not thought it ridiculous that we will allow a man to live in a box, full time, but we will not allow a man to live in a RV, full time, unless he is in a taxpaying campground? We want you to be in the system.

When you are buying a house, we not only receive the tax revenue to use for our purposes, but we gain large increases from the interest on the loan. You may pay for your house two or three times over from the interest alone. The interest is also taxed which is again placed for use in those sectors of influence we choose.

We do not want you to escape free and that is why we have made it as we have.

You are our property. We will not permit you to buy or sell unless you submit to our mark of authority.

If you go to court against us, we will wear you out, and in the end you will lose.

If you use violence, we will end up having you in one of our labor camps; more specifically called, prison industries.

You need our money, our entertainments, our fuel, and our utilities to function and if you don't have them, you feel deprived. By this, you are made to yield to our will.

You don't even know how to think anymore since we have thoroughly emasculated your religions and your faith in God. Now, you only have yourself ... and we have gotten 'that self' pretty well chasing its tail these days.

I hope this little note is sufficient to inform you what the new millennium is all about.

The 21st century is our century. You may stay if you do as you are told.

We have no intention of playing around with your so-called human rights or your so-called Constitution. These things were only used for our purposes, for a time. Your Constitution is a joke to us, and we can do with it what we please.

It probably never occurred to you, that years ago, your Constitution was used to refuse abortions. When we decided to have abortions legalized, we used the same Constitution to justify it.

Your human rights are what we say they are and your Constitution is what we say it is.

We have only used this phrase of "human rights" to keep things sufficiently in turmoil. The more things are unsettled, the better we like them, until we have everything in complete servitude.

This little letter may offend some of you, because it is presented so plainly, but that truly is no concern of ours. In simple terms, to quote 'our boy' Dick Cheney, "You're fucked!" ;-) Have a nice day... Permmalink

Two Drugs Are Effective Against Rare Cancer Steve Jobs Had, Studies Find

By MELLY ALAZRAK, Posted 12:40 PM 02/10/11 People, Health Care, Pfizer, Apple, Novartis

Two oral cancer drugs -- Sutent from Pfizer (PFE) and Afinitor from Novartis (NVS) -- have been found to be effective against the rare form of pancreatic cancer that Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs was diagnosed with in 2004, according to a pair of studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors arise from endocrine cells of the pancreas and are quite unusual, representing just 1.3% of pancreatic cancer cases. In the U.S., there were an estimated 43,140 cases of pancreatic cancer in 2010, according to the National Cancer Institute.

But the incidence of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors is increasing, researchers note, and the 5-year survival rate is below 43%. Meanwhile, there are limited number of effective treatment options.

Pfizer's Sutent and Novartis's Afinitor are both drugs used to treat kidney cancer. But studies conducted from 2007 to 2009 show that both more than doubled the time that patients lived without their pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors spreading.

For Afinitor, the median time patients lasted before their tumors spread was 11 months, as compared with 4.6 months for those taking a placebo. Nearly three-quarters of the patients in the placebo group crossed over and started taking Afinitor, making it hard for researchers to examine the drug's overall survival effect. Afinitor's most common side effect was stomatitis. Researchers concluded that Afinitor significantly prolonged progression-free survival.

For Sutent, the median time patients lasted before their tumors spread was 11.4 months, as compared with 5.5 months for those taking a placebo. Sutent also exhibited favorable overall survival effects and tumor response. Its most common side effects were diarrhea and nausea. Researchers concluded that taking Sutent resulted in clinically meaningful improvements in patients. The study was halted early because of ethical issues arising from more deaths and serious adverse events in the placebo group.

"These studies provide optimism regarding the treatment of malignant pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors because both drugs are effective at improving disease-free survival," authors of the accompanying NEJM editorial wrote. But there are still unanswered questions. Both drugs primarily stabilize, rather than cure, the disease, and its is unclear what the possible side effects from long-term use might be. These, they say, "make the optimism guarded."

Back in 2004, Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer. He had surgery to remove the tumor and returned to work at the helm of the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant. In 2009, Jobs took a second medical leave of absence and underwent a liver transplant: The form of cancer he had most commonly metastasizes to the liver. According to Fortune, Jobs spent part of 2009 at a hospital in Basel, Switzerland, seeking treatment for neuroendocrine cancer. He returned to his post within six months.

In January, Jobs, 55, announced he was taking his third medical leave. He didn't say why.

"I heard from news that Steve Jobs may have been suffering or may still have this particular disease, although I don't know what stage," said Dr. Eric Raymond head of the Laboratoire de Pharmacobiologie des Anticancereux at the University of Paris, France, who led the research into Sutent with colleagues. "In any case, [Sutent] may be an option for [a] patient like him and it's offering hopes for prolonging [patients'] overall and disease-free survival without much affecting quality of life and social life ... I sincerely expect this may [help him] in living longer, keeping good and active life, as he demonstrated so far."

Josh Fox responds to attacks by Gas Industry

Water on fire, from GASLAND by Josh Fox

Dear Friends

Here is my response to the recent Gas Industry attacks. I hope you can spread it around! I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!!!!

Josh

AN OPEN LETTER TO JOURNALISTS
FROM GASLAND DIRECTOR JOSH FOX
IN RESPONSE TO ATTACKS BY GAS INDUSTRY

February 7, 2011

With the recent Oscar nomination of my documentary film GASLAND, Big Gas and their PR attack machine hit a new low in its blatant disregard for the truth.

In an unprecedented move, an oil and gas industry front group sent a letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences saying that the film should be ineligible for best documentary feature.

We are honored and encouraged by the Academy’s nomination. It is terrific to be acknowledged as filmmakers by the film world’s most prestigious honor. But perhaps more than that, I believe that the nomination has provided hope, inspiration and affirmation for the thousands of families out there who are suffering because of the natural gas drilling. The Oscars are about dreams, and I know that for all of us living with the nightmare of gas drilling the nomination provides further proof that someone out there cares.

Now Big Gas wants to take that away, as they have shattered the American dream for so many.

GASLAND exposes the disaster being caused across the U.S. by the largest domestic natural gas drilling campaign history and how the contentious Halliburton-developed drilling technology called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking threatens the water supply of millions.

Fracking is a whole-scale industrialization process that pumps millions of gallons of toxic material directly into the ground. Thousands of documented contamination cases show the harmful chemicals used have been turning up in people’s water supplies in fracking areas all over the map.

We stand behind the testimonials, facts, science and investigative journalism in the film 100 percent. We have issued a point-by-point rebuttal of the group’s claims (“Affirming Gasland”), posted on our website:

www.gaslandthemovie.com.

It’s not just us they’re after. The gas industry goes after anyone who tries to punch a hole in their lie. Last week the same pro-drilling group, Energy in Depth (EID), attacked an investigative piece on drilling pollution by ProPublica, the highly credible public interest journalism organization.

And just last week, T. Boone Pickens, the most visible promoter of gas fracking, went on The Daily Show claiming that he personally has fracked over 3,000 wells and never witnessed any contamination cases, even when Jon Stewart asked him about GASLAND point blank. He simply stated over and over again the industry lie, that fracking is safe. Not a single word of acknowledgement, or responsibility for the claims of thousands and the threat posed to millions.

The gas industry believes it can create a new reality in which their nationwide onshore drilling campaign isn’t a disaster. But no amount of PR money or slick ads can keep the stories of contamination coming from thousands of Americans from being any less true.

On Monday, Congressional investigators called out frackers for pumping millions of gallons of diesel fuel directly into the ground, exposing drinking water sources to benzene and other carcinogens. This makes EID’s specious and misleading attack on the science and data in GASLAND especially ironic since Halliburton stonewalled Congressman Henry Waxman’s investigation into fracking, refusing to provide data on their use of diesel and other harmful chemicals injected in the fracking process.

There are major watershed areas providing water to millions of Americans that are at risk here, including the watershed areas for New York City and Philadelphia. The catastrophe has been widely covered not only in GASLAND, but also by hundreds of news stories, films and TV segments. This is a moment of crisis that cannot be understated.

Even before its release, the power of the film was not lost on the industry. In the March 24th edition of the Oil and Gas Journal, Skip Horvath, the president of the Natural Gas Supply Association said that GASLAND is “well done. It holds people’s attention. And it could block our industry.”

GASLAND was seen by millions and I personally toured with the film to over 100 cities. In affected areas, people came to the screenings with their contaminated water samples in tow. They came to have the truth they know shared and confirmed

As Maurice D. Hinchey, U.S. Representative (NY-22) recently said, “Thanks to GASLAND and the millions of grassroots activists across the country, we finally have a counterweight to the influence of the oil and gas industry in our nation’s capital.”

Big Gas is blocking the truth in their pursuit of hundreds of billions of dollars of profit. Their clear goal is to ensure our nation remains addicted to fossil fuels for the rest of this century. They seek to stifle the development of truly renewable energy.

They’re playing dirty in more ways than one, attacking the film and the testimonials and science in it instead of taking responsibility and addressing the contamination, destruction and harm that they are creating. I now know how the people in my documentary feel, to have the things they know to be true and the questions they are raising so blatantly discounted and smeared. It is truly unfortunate that the gas-drilling industry continues to deny what is so obvious to Americans living in gaslands across the nation.

Oscar buzz for Gasland fuelled by US energy lobby attacks

An Energy in Depth campaign has helped publicise the film and have focused public attention on its subject, natural gas drilling

Suzanne Goldenberg, US environment correspondent, guardian.co.uk, Monday 21 February 2011 11.36 GMT, Article history

A trailer for the film Gasland

There is no such thing as bad publicity. But the PR adage seems to have been overlooked by America's energy lobby, whose attacks on a documentary on natural gas drilling have dramatically raised the film's pre-Oscar buzz.

The attacks – including a demand to strike the film, Gasland, from Oscar contention – have brought a fresh burst of public attention to the documentary as well as its subject, a controversial method of natural gas extraction known as hydraulic fracturing.

In the countdown to the 27 February awards ceremony, Energy in Depth, an industry lobbying group set up by Halliburton, BP, Shell and other companies, has stepped up its attacks on Gasland.

The attention has been a bonanza for the film-maker, Josh Fox. Gasland – though it became a sensation online for scenes of flames shooting out of a kitchen tap – had only a very limited commercial release. He has noted Energy in Depth on his Facebook page and elsewhere to help publicise the film.

But the inadvertent consequences of their campaign does not appear to have given Energy in Depth much pause.

Last Thursday, the organisation – which has a whole section devoted to Gasland on its website – took a swipe at Fox and the actor, Mark Ruffalo, who is also up for an Oscar, for visiting Congress to support a bill for government regulation of hydraulic fracturing.

"It's clear that this event, scripted by a Hollywood publicist one week before the Academy Awards, is focused on achieving staged drama and inside-the-beltway chatter," Energy in Depth said in a statement.

The industry lobby had earlier written to the Motion Picture Academy arguing that the film was ineligible for an Oscar in the documentary category because it contains inaccuracies.

"The many errors, inconsistencies and outright falsehoods catalogued ... cast serious doubt on Gasland's worthiness for this most honoured award, and directly violate both the letter and spirit of the published criteria that presumably must be met by Gasland's competitors in this category," the letter said.

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, injects chemicals and huge quantities of water at high pressure up to 8,000 feet deep to crack open the rock and release natural gas. Its development has helped fuel a natural gas boom across America, but there is growing evidence that it is contaminating water and leaking into homes.

Fox called on Barack Obama to ban hydraulic fracturing until more is known about the environmental dangers.

"The point is, that he has to wake up to this now," Fox said. "It's been flying under the radar for long enough," he said. "We're seeing hundreds of incidents on a smaller scale every day spread out across the United States."

Fox set out to make his film in 2008, when he received a letter from a natural gas company offering $100,000 (£62,000) to lease his land for drilling.

In the past five years, America has turned increasingly to natural gas for electricity supply. Natural gas generated about 25% of US electricity last year, up from about 12% in 1996.

Some proponents – such as the Texas oil mogul T Boone Pickens who has invested heavily in natural gas – have argued that it could help move America towards a lower carbon economy. But there is growing evidence of environmental dangers from Colorado to Oklahoma to Pennsylvania of the costs of an industry which so far has only minimal government oversight. The Environmental Protection Agency is also reviewing the science on its potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The natural gas drilling industry has largely evaded environmental regulation thanks to the intervention of Dick Cheney. The former vice-president's 2005 energy policy freed drilling companies from reporting on chemicals used in fracturing.

Planet Hollywood: is the universe full of little green men like Paul?

We expect extraterrestrials to look the same as each other yet alien from ourselves. Where on Earth did that idea come from?

Paul alien
Greetings, Earthlings, I've been expecting you ... Paul. Photograph: Universal Pictures

Posted by David Cox, Friday 18 February 2011 12.38 GMT, guardian.co.uk

The Paul in Paul is a little green man. As an archetypal extraterrestrial, he would be, wouldn't he? But where did we get the idea that beings from outer space would most likely be dwarfish, verdant hominids?

Paul himself offers an explanation. He claims his race deliberately drenched our culture with images of themselves to ensure that when they eventually made contact, we wouldn't have "a spaz attack". On the face of it, this makes sense. Our comics, pulp books and screen fare were indeed awash with small, green, humanoid aliens from the 1890s until relatively recently.

All the same, only a fool would take at face value the word of an extraterrestrial, especially one fashioned by CGI. Paul fancies himself as a bit of a wag, and he may just be joking. Or he could be trying to impress us by exaggerating the capabilities of his own tribe's spin doctors.

Nonetheless, it has to be acknowledged that perhaps the best documented of all known alien visitations did indeed feature three-foot-high, thin-limbed humanoids. The "goblins" of the Kelly/Hopkinsville encounter in 1955 were described as looking metallic, rather than pastel-hued; perhaps, though, they were wearing protective suits. Such a precaution would have been only prudent: the visitants' earthly welcome included a fusillade from gun-toting Kentucky farmers.

Paul will doubtless have been annoyed to notice, however, that since the 50s, belief in little green men has suffered a downturn. Now, people deride anyone who expects alien visitants to take this form. Since the glory days of ET, even the movies have come to treat the humanoid extraterrestrial as either a figure of fun or a childish plaything.

It became fashionable to expect aliens to be entirely, well, alien. On the big screen, those taking human form often now do so only as a cunning means of disguising their actual fantasticality. Behind this change in attitude lies the emergence of the belief that to anthropomorphise extraterrestrial life is a foolish error.

With Time's Arrow and Evolution, published in 1951, Princeton biology professor Harold Blum persuaded many of his peers that any form of life discovered elsewhere in the cosmos would be wildly different from any to be found on Earth. After all, he argued, the second law of thermodynamics implies that the universe has been growing more and more disorganised since its inception.

Some of Blum's "divergenist" supporters suggested that evidence for his surmise can be seen all around us. If our one small planet has managed to spawn at least seven million species, ranging from bacteria to tigers, imagine the variation that would be likely to occur across an entire universe. The unpredictability of evolution, they insisted, fosters novelty, not repetition.

This all sounds like bad news for Paul. But stay. Fashions change, in thought as in so much else. Since the heyday of divergenism, a rival "convergionist" school has been gaining ground. Convergionists point out that evolution yields similarity as well as diversity. Natural selection obeys universal laws. The same tropes are bound to recur, subtly modified, as similar problems bring forth similar solutions. Fish and mammals developed eyes independently, since eyes are a good idea. Why shouldn't the same kind of process occur in other galaxies?

So far, we know of only one creature capable even of imagining intergalactic travel. It's us. A being that could realise this notion would have to be a whole lot smarter than we are. Yet it's not unreasonable to suppose that it might arrive at its exalted state along a path that's not too different from the one we've taken. Its brain might have to evolve far beyond our own. Yet why should its body? Perhaps this would just shrink a bit, as the contents of its owner's head became ever more important.

Even evolution deniers might arrive at a similar conclusion, if by a different route. A Creator practising intelligent design would hardly waste a blueprint which had worked. That wouldn't be very intelligent, would it?

So maybe Paul was indeed just having us on about that alien brainwashing programme. At some unthinking level, perhaps we worked out for ourselves what kind of visitors we should expect from outer space. And we may even have got the answer right.

Be Aware: The Nexus Approaches!

Posted on October 10, 2010 by mayasoma

"The human race is headed towards a great change, many spirits will return to the stars and something magnificent is going to happen!" - Astral Walker

Can you feel it? The race is on, the diaspora has begun and souls are scrambling to make sense of the intensifying energies on Planet Earth. If only our history books had documented the truth of the astrological cycles as the Maya, and many other indigenous tribes, have long done for their own people, then there would not be so much uncertainty and fear. Unfortunately, that is not how this part of our homo-sapien history is to be played out. At present, the 3D world is going crazy and the only way to manuever these times is to understand the facts. And so, without further ado, here is some of our history…

26,000 years ago, the galactic center of the Milky Way emitted an enormous energetic wave better known as the Nexus. It does this every 26,000 years, as they say, there is nothing new under the sun. This emissions are what have caused the tumultuous transitions from each of our previous world eras. If you are not familiar with these facts, simply research indigenous tribes and their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and soon to be 5th worlds.

What was released all that time ago will soon reach our earth in full strength. The Nexus has its own personal rhythm and does take some time to cross the galaxies and skies. I believe its arrival correlates to the Mayan Long Count End Date of December 2012. Afterall, the center of the Milky Way is where the Maya believe their Creator Hunab Ku resides. Our Creator has sent out an energy impulse, this Supreme Being is blowing us/creation a kiss. Unfortunately, our consciousness resides too far away from our original empowered selves to simply receive that kiss in bliss.

That incoming energy is meant to completely change our world, in other words, to wake us all up to who we are: infinite Gods and Goddesses with incredible abilities and powers. This incoming beam of bluish-white light will alter and restore our DNA from its current state which only uses 3% of its capacities to a renewed state of 100% remembrance. Translated: 97% of what scientist call junk DNA will be reactivated. WoW…a jolt of electricity that courses through our veins, awakening our souls and minds. No one is going to escape this phenomena. Thank you Hunab Ku!

Our main problem lies then with the Dark Lords who currently control the 3D world. They are also fully aware of the approaching Nexus and have set out a program to depopulate the Earth as much as possible. Why would they do that? Who are these Dark Lords? It’s an old story, again, much of our missing history, but the short and long version of it is there is an inter-galalctic battle on right now, a war that is being waged for souls. If the Dark Lords, negative Et’s, have their way, the coming earth catastrophes will take people into fear and fear is a place where they can trap one’s soul, one’s consciousness, forevermore. On a distant planet, in a distant place, maybe somewhere that looks exactly like our Earth, a new slave race can be created with the trapped souls. The Dark Lords know, full well, that their “time” on Planet Earth is over. A new era has cometh… the age of peace and enlightenment…and they must flee. They intend to flee with as many captives as possible. Sound like a bad sci-fi movie? I wish it were, but these are our current events and the facts are unknown to almost everyone. How frightening! Wake up, please, before you are whisked away to another dimension without personal agreement to do so.

“Right now the realm of darkness is not interested in this (peace). They are organized to block it. They seek to unbalance the Earth and its environment so we will be unready for the alignment in 2012.” - Carlos Barrios, Mayan Datekeeper

Take a look around…. ecological disasters leading to worldwide famines and extinction, environmental catastrophes that destroy the lives of millions, economical collapses that create a fearful, dependent race and threats of terrorism and world wars loom over our existence. Is this the four horsemen spoken of in the Book of Revelations? It clearly is the workings of the Dark Lords and its about to get more intense, after all, these are their death throes.

“From that 1987 date until now, Mr. Barrios says, we have been in a time when the right arm of the materialistic world is disappearing, slowly but inexorably. We are at the cusp of the era when peace begins, and people live in harmony with Mother Earth. We are no longer in the World of the Fourth Sun, but we are not yet in the World of the Fifth Sun. This is the time in-between, the time of transition.

As we pass through transition there is a colossal, global convergence of environmental destruction, social chaos, war, and ongoing Earth changes. All this, Mr. Barrios says, was foreseen via the simple, spiral mathematics of the Mayan calendars. It will change, Mr. Barrios observes. Everything will change. He said Mayan Daykeepers view the Dec. 21, 2012 date as a rebirth, the start of the World of the Fifth Sun. It will be the start of a new era resulting from — and signified by — the solar meridian crossing the galactic equator, and the earth aligning itself with the center of the galaxy.” - Carlos Barrios, Mayan Datekeeper

Meanwhile, the Family of Light is exerting every effort for a mass awakening, for gathering, for consciously uniting as we know on some level that everything is dependent on us to do so. We are supposed to be creating an astral force field around the planet and ourselves in the shape of the Flower of Life (see Drunvalo Melchizedek’s work on this matter for more information). This symbol can and will prepare us for the enormity of the approaching Nexus. We are supposed to be clearing our fields as much as possible of debris, creating no new karma, so that we are a crystal clear channel for receiving the Nexus energy. We must give praise and thanks as we have received, and will continue to receive, so much help from the Galactic Federation of positive Et’s.

I ask myself though, have enough souls awoken to make this transition happen with ease? Can geological earth disasters be diminished? The Dark Lords are earnestly working hard to create as many earth catastrophes as possible in these last days in order to capture their slave race of unaware humans. Many will succumb to this fate due to fear, many will go to the stars as their earth contracts are complete, and a handful of ascended beings will remain on the New Earth.

If you happened to be a person who was to die in shock and fear, your consciousness would be lost and confused on the astral plane for a moment. It is in those crucial moments that the negative Et’s can and will capture your essence in a containment vehicle if you are not aware. As quickly as you come into consciousness, get to the benevolent blue light. I have been warned not to be drawn down any tunnels or caves, nor gravitate to any bright yellow-red lights and by no means go with any beckoning ET’s.

The benevolent ET’s, the light ones, are calling us home and their bioluminescent blue-white light is the signal. You can feel this with your heart. They have said Operation Victory is at hand. They have stated that the Dark Lords cannot succeed and all disasters will be minimized (let’s hope so as some seriously dangerous threats are presenting themselves on the earth right now). They have also said the Dark Lords are at their most dangerous as they face defeat, so it is crucial to be fully present! Be aware! Vaccines? Genetically modified foods? Chemical spraying? Understand, these are some of their tools for mind control and keeping the masses asleep. Whatever cometh, wherever you find yourself in these last days where we count days, simply remember, you have only one thing to do: get to the bluish-white light, reach out for the Nexus. If you do, your full consciousness will be re-instated and you will be safe and empowered.

Let us recall the last sign in the Hopi prophecy which states that a blue planet from the Heavens will crash into Earth causing earth destruction, this last sign is what all elders are awaiting as our entry into the 5th world. Possibly, it is not a planet, but an energy wave: the Nexus?

Lightwalkers, we are going home now. We have felt the Nexus approaching for years, even if we could or could not put words to it. Our Creator desires our remembrance and this collective shift to magnificence is welcome. Stay in your heart and the Dark Lords will lose power. It is promised and all is well!

Colin Powell demands answers over Curveball's WMD lies

Former US secretary of state asks why CIA failed to warn him over Iraqi defector who has admitted fabricating WMD evidence

Colin Powell, the US secretary of state at the time of the Iraq invasion, has called on the CIA and Pentagon to explain why they failed to alert him to the unreliability of a key source behind claims of Saddam Hussein's bio-weapons capability.

Responding to the Guardian's revelation that the source, Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi or "Curveball" as his US and German handlers called him, admitted fabricating evidence of Iraq's secret biological weapons programme, Powell said that questions should be put to the US agencies involved in compiling the case for war.

In particular he singled out the CIA and the Defence Intelligence Agency – the Pentagon's military intelligence arm. Janabi, an Iraqi defector, was used as the primary source by the Bush administration to justify invading Iraq in March 2003. Doubts about his credibility circulated before the war and have been confirmed by his admission this week that he lied.

Powell said that the CIA and DIA should face questions about why they failed to sound the alarm about Janabi. He demanded to know why it had not been made clear to him that Curveball was totally unreliable before false information was put into the key intelligence assessment, or NIE, put before Congress, into the president's state of the union address two months before the war and into his own speech to the UN.

"It has been known for several years that the source called Curveball was totally unreliable," he told the Guardian . "The question should be put to the CIA and the DIA as to why this wasn't known before the false information was put into the NIE sent to Congress, the president's state of the union address and my 5 February presentation to the UN."

On 5 February 2003, a month before the invasion, Powell went before the UN security council to make the case for war. In his speech he referred to "firsthand descriptions of biological weapons factories on wheels and on rails … The source was an eyewitness who supervised one of these facilities". It is now known that the source, Janabi, made up the story.

Curveball told the Guardian he welcomed Powell's demand. "It's great," he said tonight. "The BND [German intelligence] knew in 2000 that I was lying after they talked to my former boss, Dr Bassil Latif, who told them there were no mobile bioweapons factories. For 18 months after that they left me alone because they knew I was telling lies even though I never admitted it. Believe me, back then, I thought the whole thing was over for me.

"Then all of a sudden [in the run up to the 2003 invasion] they came back to me and started asking for more details about what I had told them. I still don't know why the BND then passed on my information to the CIA and it ended up in Powell's speech.

"I want there to be an inquiry so that people will know the truth. So many lies have been told about me over the years. I finally want the truth to come out."

Powell has previously expressed regret about the role he unwittingly played in passing on false information to the UN, saying it had put a blot on his career. But his latest comments increase pressure on the intelligence agencies and their former chiefs to divulge what they knew at the time and why they failed to filter out such a bad source.

George Tenet, then head of the CIA, is particularly in the firing line. He failed to pass on warnings from German intelligence about Curveball's reliability.

Tenet put out a statement on his website in response to Curveball's admission. He said: "The handling of this matter is certainly a textbook case of how not to deal with defector provided material. But the latest reporting of the subject repeats and amplifies a great deal of misinformation."

Tenet refers to his own 2007 memoir on the war, At the Centre of the Storm, in which he insists that the first he heard about Curveball's unreliability was two years after the invasion – "too late to do a damn thing about it".

Tenet has disputed Drumheller's version of events, insisting that the official made no formal warning to CIA headquarters.

In the light of Curveball's confession, politicians in Iraq called for his permanent exile and scorned his claim to want to return to his motherland and build a political party. "He is a liar, he will not serve his country," said one Iraqi MP. In his adopted home of Germany, MPs are demanding to know why the BND, paid Curveball £2,500 a month for at least five years after they knew he had lied.

Hans-Christian Ströbele, a Green MP, said Janabi had arguably violated a German law which makes warmongering illegal. Under the law, it is a criminal offence to do anything "with the intent to disturb the peaceful relations between nations, especially anything that leads to an aggressive war", he said. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment, he added, though he did not expect it would ever come to that.

Curveball told the Guardian he was pleased to have finally told the truth. He said he had given the Guardian's phone number to his wife and brother in Sweden "just in case something happens to me".

Further pressure on the CIA came from Lawrence Wilkerson, Powell's chief of staff at the time of the invasion. He said Curveball's lies raised questions about how the CIA had briefed Powell ahead of his fateful UN speech.Tyler Drumheller, head of the CIA's Europe division in the run-up to the invasion, said he welcomed Curveball's confession because he had always warned Tenet that he may have been a fabricator.

Arkansas cities feel unexplained surge in earthquakes

By SARAH EDDINGTON, ASSOCIATED PRESS

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Jim Sutterfield was briefly puzzled by a thumping sound that seemed to slam the back of his office chair. But when the small-town Arkansas fire chief turned and saw no one was around, he quickly realized it was just an earthquake - again.

"That was only my second time to feel one, but others here have felt them for three or four months now," Greenbrier chief Jim Sutterfield said after feeling the latest tremor on Wednesday. "Now when it happens, people say, 'Well, there's another one.'"

Several small earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 1.8 to 3.8 have rattled the north-central Arkansas cities of Greenbrier and Guy this week, and the cause is unknown.

The U.S. Geological Survey has reported more than 30 earthquakes in the area since Sunday, including a magnitude 3.8 quake Thursday morning and at least 16 others occurring Wednesday, two of which were magnitude 3.2 and 3.5. More than 700 quakes have occurred in the region over the past six months.

Scott Ausbrooks, geohazards supervisor for the Arkansas Geological Survey, said the quakes are part of what is now called the Guy earthquake swarm - a series of mild earthquakes that have been occurring periodically since 2009. A similar swarm occurred in the early 1980s when a series of quakes hit Enola, Ark.

Ausbrooks said geologists are still trying to discover the exact cause of the recent seismic activity but have identified two possibilities.

"It could just be a naturally occurring swarm like the Enola swarm, or it could be related to ongoing natural gas exploration in the area," he said.

A major source of natural gas in Arkansas is the Fayetteville Shale, an organically-rich rock formation in north-central Arkansas. Drillers free up the gas by using hydraulic fracturing or "fracking" - injecting pressurized water to create fractures deep in the ground.

Ausbrooks said geologists don't believe the production wells are the problem, but rather the injection wells that are used to dispose of "frack" water when it can no longer be re-used. The wastewater is pressurized and injected into the ground.

"We see no correlation between natural gas production wells and earthquakes, but we haven't ruled out injection wells," he said, adding that if production wells were the cause, the earthquakes would be scattered all over the region underlain by the Fayetteville Shale formation and not in just one area.

Ausbrooks said the earthquakes are occurring in the vicinity of several injection wells.

Guy Police Chief Dave Martini said the locals continue to blame the gas companies for the quakes.

"We have a disposal well here just outside of the city," Martini said. "People are suspecting that to be causing it, even though there isn't any proof of that."

Martini said the earthquakes started increasing in frequency over the past week and that the disposal well has seen an increase in use recently.

Lawrence Bengal, director of the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission, said a six-month moratorium was established in January on new injection wells in the area. He said four companies are operating already-drilled injection wells: SEECO Inc., Chesapeake Operating Inc., Clarita Operating LLC and Deep-Six Water Disposal Services LLC.

The moratorium, which is expected to end in July, is intended to allow time to study the relationship - if any - between the injection wells and earthquakes in the area.

The largest quake of the Guy Earthquake Swarm was a magnitude 4.0, which occurred in October, Ausbrooks said. The region could possibly see quakes reaching as high as 5.0, but he said anything above 6.0 is unlikely.

The magnitude scale for earthquakes is logarithmic, meaning a magnitude 3 earthquake would produce waves with amplitudes 10 times greater than a magnitude 2 and 100 times greater than a magnitude 1. Geologists say quakes of magnitude 2.5 to 3.0 are generally the smallest felt by humans.

"These periods of high activity are not uncommon. I don't think it's anything to be overly concerned about," Ausbrooks said. "We always encourage people to keep tuned in to what's going on and to always have an all-hazards disaster preparedness kit."

For Pacific Gas & Electric Co., 2010 was a horrendous year.

One of its big gas lines exploded, killing eight people and destroying a neighborhood in San Bruno. Investigators soon discovered that the company lacks even basic information about its gas lines and runs a safety and inspection regime that could generously be described as inadequate.

The company spent $46 million on a cynically self-serving voter initiative to block potential competitors — and lost.

Its initiative to install SmartMeters in millions of homes, to manage electricity distribution more efficiently is facing a backlash from consumers who fear inaccurate meter readings and possible health effects. Many utilities have had trouble with these meters, and PG&E’s program was earlier and more ambitious than most, but an investigation ordered by the state found that the company’s poor customer service exacerbated its problems.

What consequences have PG&E and its executives faced for these blunders? None. The stock is doing just fine. The California Public Utilities Commission has awarded the company nearly $30 million in bonuses for energy-saving targets that weren’t achieved. The company plans to hire a new gas operations executive, but no one has lost his job — except a hapless manager who thought it would be smart to spy on the online discussions of SmartMeter opponents.

When it comes to accountability, PG&E is making Wall Street bankers look good.

The company’s incompetence, arguably, has been matched only by the performance of its regulator. The explosion in San Bruno revealed systemic flaws in the way the Public Utilities Commission oversees gas pipeline operators and exposed the revolving door between it and the companies it is supposed to police.

Close relationships between regulators and the regulated are common in the utility business. The commission has many functions, and even critics say it performs many of them well. But it has been slow to open a comprehensive public investigation into the San Bruno explosion and recently disclosed that it has — of all things — started a foundation to cover some of its expenses with donations from the companies it regulates.

PG&E customers, meanwhile, pay some of the highest electricity rates in the nation. And have you ever tried to get the company to provide routine customer service?

In many ways, utilities such as PG&E are throwbacks, vestiges of an industry that enjoyed guaranteed profits for the better part of a century.

Even after deregulation and Enron’s fraud forced PG&E into bankruptcy in 2001, it emerged remarkably intact, still enjoying a near-monopoly on the distribution of gas and electricity in its markets and an all-but-guaranteed return on capital.

Its chairman and chief executive, Peter Darbee, has a background in finance, having signed on as chief financial officer in 1999 before being named chief executive in 2005. He has no track record in engineering, public policy, public relations or customer service — and it shows.

“By definition, if the board and the highly placed executives come from a financial background, their focus is going to be on the bottom line and not on operations and safety,” said state Sen. Mark Leno, who represents parts of San Francisco, Marin and Sonoma counties.

Meanwhile, the Public Utilities Commission is being infused with new blood. Gov. Jerry Brown has appointed two consumer advocates, including the longtime lawyer for the state’s leading utility watchdog, to the five-member panel and will soon appoint a third. The current president, Michael Peevey, a former utility executive, might be ousted from that post.

Utility regulation is critical in a state trying to lead the way in green energy, a fact not lost on Brown. PG&E — and the PUC for that matter —- would argue that they’ve done a good job on renewable-energy mandates and other aspects of the state’s ambitious, expensive energy and environmental policies.

But a regulated monopoly like PG&E, which touches almost everyone in Northern California, has to do more than a couple of things right. For some people here — notably Bruce Brugmann, publisher of the San Francisco Bay Guardian, who has run a decades-long campaign against the company — PG&E is irretrievably cursed by the dubious dealings of its founders and deep ties to the state’s moneyed elite.

For me, it’s simpler: The company screwed up, and someone — the government or the marketplace — ought to hold it accountable.

Army records destroyed, hampering veterans' quest for health care

An investigation shows the Army had soldiers destroy their records in the Persian Gulf. Now many veterans who are seeking help can't get it, because they can't prove they were hurt in service. (Feb. 10, 2011 // WTSP-TV)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A letter from the Army Department telling units to destroy their records after the end of Operation Desert Storm has made it more difficult for injured veterans to get the medical benefits they need.

The letter, never made public before now, says units were told to destroy their records because officials had no room to ship the paperwork back to the United States. The letter goes on to say it was in direct contradiction to existing Army regulations.

“This could have been one, five, six, a couple of hundred or this could be thousands [of soldiers],” says Andrew Marshall, a Florida regional officer with the nonprofit Disabled American Veterans group. “You don’t know.”

One solider trying to get help from the Veterans Administration for combat-related injuries says he has been turned down because his records are missing. He did not want to be identified.

He says he has all the medical records for the time he was in the states, but the records for everything that happened outside of the country are gone.

Marshall says the Army should have backups to the records destroyed in the Persian Gulf.

But the Army’s letter says several years after soldiers began putting in medical claims, it was discovered all records below the brigade level no longer existed.

Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm pushed Iraqi troops out of Kuwait; it lasted from Aug. 2, 1990, to the cease-fire on April 11, 1991. In the conflict, 383 service members died; as of last year, 467 were reported injured. About 2.225 million troops served in the war, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Not just the after-action reports have been destroyed or are missing. According to some files, when some veterans come to the Veterans Administration to get help for service-related disabilities, records show they served, but medical records are missing.

That means when the vets make claims, they are turned down.

Another Gulf War vet who also didn’t want to be identified said what disturbs him most is the lack of recourse.

The veteran served 20 years in the Army. The Veterans Administration has documentation that he served in the 82nd Airborne Division as an Army Ranger and made 125 parachute jumps. All of his claims, including hearing loss, ankle and back injury, have been denied because efforts to obtain his service medical records were unsuccessful.

The Defense Department did send a letter telling the same soldier that he and others in his unit were in an area where exposure to nerve agents saran and cycolosarin was possible, but they should not worry about any side effects.

“So we all got exposed to nerve agent as well, and according to the military, that is never going to affect us,” he said. “They just wanted to advise us that we’ve been exposed.”

Rep. C.W. Young, R-Fla., says he did not know of the Army’s letter until now. His office asking the Defense Department to look into the matter.

VA and HUD issue first-ever report on homeless veterans

Written by Lake County News reports, Saturday, 12 February 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – For the first time, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have published the most authoritative analysis of the extent and nature of homelessness among Veterans.

According to HUD and VA's assessment, nearly 76,000 veterans were homeless on a given night in 2009 while roughly 136,000 veterans spent at least one night in a shelter during that year.

This unprecedented assessment is based on an annual report HUD provides to Congress and explores in greater depth the demographics of veterans who are homeless, how the number of veterans compare to others who are homeless, and how veterans access and use the nation's homeless response system.

HUD's report, “Veteran Homelessness: A Supplement to the 2009 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress,” www.hudhre.info/documents/2009AHARVeteransReport.pdf, examines the data in the department's annual report to Congress in-depth.

“With our federal, state and community partners working together, more veterans are moving into safe housing,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “But we're not done yet. Providing assistance in mental health, substance abuse treatment, education and employment goes hand-in-hand with preventive steps and permanent supportive housing. We continue to work towards our goal of finding every Veteran safe housing and access to needed services.”

Last June, President Obama announced the nation's first comprehensive strategy to prevent and end homelessness, including a focus on homeless Veterans.

The report, “Opening Doors: Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness,” puts the country on a path to end Veterans and chronic homelessness by 2015; and to ending homelessness among children, family, and youth by 2020.

Read more at www.usich.gov/PDF/OpeningDoorsOverview.pdf.

Key findings of the study

More than 3,000 cities and counties reported 75,609 homeless veterans on a single night in January of 2009; 57 percent were staying in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program while the remaining 43 percent were unsheltered.

Veterans represent approximately 12 percent of all homeless persons counted nationwide during the 2009 “point-in-time snapshot.”

During a 12-month period in 2009, an estimated 136,000 veterans-or about 1 in every 168 veterans-spent at least one night in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program.

The vast majority of sheltered homeless veterans (96 percent) experienced homelessness alone while a much smaller share (four percent) was part of a family.

Sheltered homeless veterans are most often individual white men between the ages of 31 and 50 and living with a disability.

Low-income veterans are twice as likely to become homeless compared to all low-income adults. HUD and VA also examined the likelihood of becoming homeless among American veterans with particular demographic characteristics.

In 2009, twice as many poor Hispanic veterans used a shelter at some point during the year compared with poor non-Hispanic veterans. African American veterans in poverty had similar rates of homelessness.

Most veterans who used emergency shelter stayed for only brief periods. One-third stayed in shelter for less than one week; 61 percent used a shelter for less than one month; and 84 percent stayed for less than three months.

The report also concluded that veterans remained in shelters longer than did non-veterans.

In 2009, the median length of stay for veterans who were alone was 21 days in an emergency shelter and 117 days in transitional housing.

By contrast, non-veteran individuals stayed in an emergency shelter for 17 days and 106 days in transitional housing.

Nearly half of homeless veterans were located in California, Texas, New York and Florida while only 28 percent of all veterans were located in those same four states.

The report studied the path homeless veterans take into the shelter system and found most veterans come from another homeless location and few entered the shelter system from their own housing or from housing provided by family or friends.

Sheltered homeless veterans are far more likely to be alone rather than part of a family household; 96 percent of veterans are individuals compared to 63 percent in the overall homeless population.

I thought that it was necessary to let you know that I am not sure what you are talking about. I have seen my name come up in reference to you several times, although I do not know you, or even care what you do. What seems to be the problem? I have never "bumped" you off any sys. that I can remember, nor would I have a reason too. There is something that you might consider, and that is the old ploy of divide and conquer. If you take the time to look at history in general, you will find that "we" have been controlled by 5% of the population throughout history and if you look deeper you will find that the moment people start working together to break up this 5% that the 5% will initiate some kind of tactic to separate everyone.....cause how this 5% has maintained control is thru ignorance.....and the moment that the people start to get smart and learn they get divided and conquered. I hope that this does not happen with the information that is being shared about this state of the art reality called telecommunications. Ignorance and Divide & Conquer have been around too long and I am open for change. I am sorry that you feel the way you do, but I can't think of anything that I have done that would upset you I do know that since I use my real name and no handles that someone has used my name in several areas of the country. If you feel that I am "out to get you" forget it, cause I have made a special effort to get along with people rather than kick up s--t with them. There is another thing.....if you know the sysop of 8BBS ask him how many times I check in on this system .... I think that it amounts to maybe 4 or 5 times a month. I am not on your case, please don't put me there. As John Lennon said "IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT GET INTO THE SHADE." cas

Here is some related material ... and let's start with what upset me:

PG&E says Lake County's SmartMeter rollout to begin this month

Written by Elizabeth Larson, Lake County News, Monday, 07 February 2011

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Pacific Gas & Electric Co. says it will begin upgrading electric meters across Lake County to the new SmartMeter technology beginning this month.

In announcing its plans PG&E said the technology will provide customers with more information about their electric and gas usage and options to save money, while also helping utilities make better use of renewable power.

[THE ABOVE PARAGRAPH IS A LIE; STUDIES ARE INCOMPLETE,
PG&E wants to get rid of Meter Readers so their Executives Get More Money,
SMART METER TECHNOLOGY IS NOT SAFE and THERE IS NO PROOF IT IS]

PG&E said it will host SmartMeter Education Centers from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, at its Clearlake customer service office, 14730 Olympic Drive, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at the company's Lakeport office, 325 N Forbes St.

A SmartMeter expert will be available for customers to speak with individually. Customers can drop in anytime during the educational center hours to ask questions one-on-one.

PG&E spokesman Jeff Smith said the local rollout should take a few weeks, and all PG&E customers eventually will have them.

So far, PG&E has installed 7.5 million of the devices, and plans to reach 10 million installations by 2012, Smith said.

The technology's future benefits will include better power outage detection and the ability for customers to get real-time energy usage information, according to PG&E.

However, PG&E's use of the SmartMeters has led to controversy and concern in communities around the state, including here in Lake County.

Last month the Board of Supervisors hosted a lengthy meeting during which citizens spoke against the technology.

The outcome was that the board agreed to draft a letter to the the state Legislature to ask that options be included in current legislation for opting out of the technology.

While it's been reported that studies have found the amount of radio frequency used by SmartMeters is low compared to cell phones, citizens groups across the state are nonetheless opposing the meters for a variety of reasons, including worries over potential impacts on health. They also have raised issues of inaccuracy.

The group Stop Smart Meters! reported that 26 local governments in California – including the county of Mendocino and the Sonoma County communities of Sebastopol and Cotati – have called for a moratorium, a ban or have voiced opposition to SmartMeters.

Citizen concerns about the devices run the gamut from privacy breaches and billing inaccuracy to health problems ranging from sleeplessness, tinnitus, headaches and nausea, the group said.

According to a report last week, the group alleged that a former employee of a company under contract by PG&E said the company is risking public safety, stating that the meters pose a fire risk – producing an arc that could ignite any gas leaks that may be present – and that installing technicians weren't adequately trained.

While the California Public Utilities Commission conducted an investigation into SmartMeters, consumer advocacy group The Utilities Reform Network has criticized the CPUC for not going far enough in its inquiry.

The group reported that it “skeptical that Smart Meters are a smart investment for consumers. The meters have failed to provide customer benefits commensurate with their costs, which are $2.2 billion for P&GE customers alone.”

On her blog The Smart Grid Library (www.smartgridlibrary.com/), consultant Christine Hertzog has emphasized the need for security and privacy in dealing with the energy and consumer data the devices produce.

Smith said PG&E has been focusing more on communicating with its customers.

“It's been really important that we do outreach to our customers” to let them know the changes are coming, he said.

PG&E said that utilities around the nation and the world “are utilizing SmartMeter technology with great success and there is a nationwide push to modernize the power grid to make it more efficient, reliable and sustainable.”

[If Smart Meters Are Safe why are large communities protesting their installation?]

SmartMeters are intended to provide customers with information such as their hourly energy usage and daily natural gas usage, the company reported.

[Reports to BIG BROTHER: Anybody Remember TIPS, Initiated by Republicans?]

The meters also are supposed to assist with new programs like Energy Alerts, which let consumers know by phone call, text or e-mail when they're moving into higher-priced electric tiers so they can manage energy use and save money.

Smith said the company is working to communicate the devices' benefit to customers, who he said have been receptive to the information.

Initially, as the SmartMeters were rolled out, “We did not do an adequate job” of outreach, Smith said.

He said analyses conducted by outside firms found that PG&E could have done a better job of discussing the use of the devices. That was also the finding of the CPUC-commissioned study.

“It's really our responsibility to make sure we're responsive to our customers,” he said.

The customer education centers – such as the two planned this week in Lake County – have been beneficial in getting out the word, Smith said.

A previous “answer center” for consumers was held in Lakeport on Dec. 17, as Lake County News has reported.

PG&E said it will notify customers by letter about two weeks in advance of the meter upgrades. The letter includes information about the upgraded meters as well as the phone number customers can call if they have any questions or need to make special arrangements.

Regarding the installation process, prior to upgrading the meters, a PG&E employee or a PG&E contractor will knock on the door to check with the homeowner or business before installing the new meters, the company said. If no one is home the meters will be changed out as long as the installers can get access to the meters.

A brief power outage will occur during the electric meter upgrade, but there is no interruption in gas service for a gas meter upgrade, according to PG&E's statement.

After installing the meters, the company said a door hanger will be left behind with information about the upgrade.

While the regional network of SmartMeter devices is established, the new meters will continue to be manually read for about three months before PG&E transitions to billing by remote reads, PG&E reported.

PG&E has established a 24-hour SmartMeter hotline for customers who have questions about the program, 1-866-743-0263.

Republican-led House fails to pass short-term extension of Patriot Act

Evil Republican Patriot Act supported by Democrats shot down by Tea Party

[Violent Leftist Radicals Joining Tea Party To Help Topple Government?]

By Lisa Mascaro, Tribune Washington Bureau, February 8, 2011, 5:21 p.m.

WASHINGTON — The Republican-led House on Tuesday failed to pass a short-term extension of the USA Patriot Act favored by GOP leaders, an unexpected political setback that shows the difficulty the party faces in keeping control of their new majority, with its legion of tea party-inspired members.

Key provisions of the terrorist surveillance law expire at the end of the month, and a coalition of veteran Republican lawmakers and conservative new members blocked passage of a measure that many tea party activists see as federal government over-reach into private affairs.

The unexpected turn of events will require the White House, which is seeking to extend the Sept. 11-era bill through 2013, to work with congressional leaders to devise a new strategy for passage.

"I am disappointed in the outcome of tonight's vote," said Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), the author of the original act. "We are now under a time crunch."

The House voted 277-148 under a process that required a two-thirds vote, ending up seven votes short. Twenty-six Republicans voted against the bill. Democrats were divided, with 67 voting in favor and 122 against.

[Nobody says, "Vote out traitors who voted in favor of this bill."]

GOP leaders chose the ill-fated process to avoid amendments that could have ended up restructuring the measure.

The measure would have renewed three key provisions of the Patriot Act. Civil libertarians have long opposed the provisions as unwarranted federal surveillance power, a view shared by top congressional Democrats.

Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, called the act Tuesday "one of the worst laws this body has ever passed."

But with the dozens of new Republicans in Congress, opponents also are coming from the political right as tea party activists object to the law's reach into private affairs.

"There has been much discussion and debate in the organization and most believe that Congress needs to do the same: open debate and discussion before renewing," said Mark Meckler, a co-founder of Tea Party Patriots, whose group has not taken a position on the issue.

The House GOP sought an eight month extension to give leaders time to prepare to for an attempt later this year to make the law permanent, potentially inserting the national security debate into the unfolding presidential campaign season.

The Senate is considering a Democratic-backed bill that would extend the expiring provisions to 2013.

"We should not extend this debate into an election year and risk that some will play politics with our national security," said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Among the three provisions expiring Feb. 28, one allows federal investigators access to a suspect's personal materials — including library records — with a judge's approval.

Another enables the government, with a court order, to conduct roving wiretaps of suspected terrorists as they change phones or locations.

A third is known as the "lone-wolf" provision that enables authorities to conduct surveillance on foreign terrorism suspects who do not appear to be affiliated with known groups.

Critics say a permanent extension of the act, as is being sought by Republican leaders in the House and Senate, would make it less likely the law would be routinely reviewed by Congress.

Mubarak Mobs and Street Vendors: Welcome to Egypt

Posted by Medea - Fri, Feb 4, 2011

I was in the middle of buying some mints from a street vendor on Cairo’s Talat Harb Street—right off Tahrir Square–when the rocks started flying. I had given a 20-cent coin to the vendor. He gave me one pack of mints, and all hell broke loose.

“Run, run,” people yelled at me. I saw a group of men running down the street, carrying a man whose face was streaming with blood. Then I saw the pro-Mubarak thugs, armed with rocks, metal pipes, whips. “Run, Run,” the Egyptians on the street told me. I ran for shelter as fast as I could.

This has become a pattern the past few days. Thugs hired by the regime, many of them plain-clothes police, try to create chaos on the streets just outside the entrances to Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the Egyptian Revolution. They randomly attack people, including us foreigners. Many of us have been beaten, our cameras smashed. My CODEPINK colleague Tighe Barry had been picked up on this very street two days ago, thrown into a car, roughed up, and later dumped out with a warning to stay way.

Tighe refused to stay away, and so did a million Egyptians who, despite the threats of violence, teemed into Tahrir Square today in what was termed the “Day of Departure.” Young, old, rich, poor, religious, secular—they defied the desperate acts of a dying regime.

Ever since this uprising began on January 25, the determination and bravery of the Egyptians has been overwhelming to witness. The democracy forces in Tahrir Square have braved tear gas, water cannons, rocks, sniper fire and mobs storming in on horses and camels. All the while, they have stood their ground and continued to hold on to this sacred square.

Today they were determined to liberate the outside streets as well. While I was running away from the Mubarak mob on Talat Harb Street, a huge crowd came rushing out of the square, running towards the thugs. Just the sight of this oncoming sea of people was enough to frighten the thugs. The Mubarak mob disappeared as quickly as it had formed. Talat Harb Street, the site of street battles the last few days, was once again liberated. People cheered “Horreyah, horreyah”—freedom, freedom.

Out of breath from running so fast, I turned around and saw the street vendor who had sold me the mints. He had run after me. It turns out that the 20-cent coin I had given him was enough to buy two packs of mints, not one. He had come me to give me the second pack.

“Welcome to Egypt,” he said, smiling.

Donald Rumsfeld memoirs reveal no regrets over Iraq

Defense secretary at time of Iraq invasion says human, financial and political toll has been worth it to remove Saddam Hussein

The former US defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld believes the war in Iraq has been worth the cost and remains largely unapologetic about his handling of the conflict, according to his new autobiography.

Had the government of Saddam Hussein remained in power the Middle East would be "far more perilous than it is today", Rumsfeld wrote in his 800-page memoir, scheduled for release on Tuesday but reported in today's Washington Post.

Rumsfeld and other US officials cited the threat posed by Iraqi weapons of mass destruction as justification for the 2003 US-led invasion. No such weapons were found.

The former defense chief was a leading architect of the Iraq war. He was fired by President George Bush in 2006, with US troops bogged down after three and half years of fighting.

Rumsfeld's book, Known and Unknown, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post, covers his entire life, but more than half of it deals with his six years as Bush's defense secretary.

Speaking out for the first time since leaving office, Rumsfeld offers a vigorous explanation of his thoughts and actions about the war and is making available on his website many previously classified or private documents, the Post reported.

Much of Rumsfeld's explanation of what went wrong in the crucial first year of the occupation of Iraq stems from a pre-war failure to manage the postwar political transition, when the state department and Pentagon held vastly different views, the newspaper said.

Rumsfeld depicts Bush as presiding over a national security process that was marked by incoherent decision-making and policy drift, and a detriment to the war effort, the Post said.

Rumsfeld suggests Bush was at fault for not doing more to resolve disagreements among senior advisers. The president "did not always receive, and may not have insisted on, a timely consideration of his options before he made a decision, nor did he always receive effective implementation of the decisions he made", Rumsfeld wrote.

Addressing charges that he failed to provide enough troops for the Iraq war, he wrote: "In retrospect, there may have been times when more troops could have helped." But Rumsfeld insists that if senior military officers had reservations about the size of the invading force, they never informed him, the Post said.

In a lengthy section on the administration's treatment of wartime detainees, Rumsfeld regrets not leaving office in May 2004, after the Abu Ghraib prison scandal erupted, the newspaper said. "Looking back, I see there are things the administration could have done differently and better with respect to wartime detention," he acknowledged.

False flag

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

False flag operations are covert operations designed to deceive the public in such a way that the operations appear as though they are being carried out by other entities. The name is derived from the military concept of flying false colors; that is, flying the flag of a country other than one's own. False flag operations are not limited to war and counter-insurgency operations, and can be used in peace-time.

Political or religious ideologies will sometimes use false flag tactics. This can be done to discredit or implicate rival groups, create the appearance of enemies when none exist, or create the illusion of organized and directed opposition when in truth, the ideology is simply unpopular with society.

The man whispered, "God, speak to me" and a meadowlark sang. But the man did not hear. So the man yelled "God, speak to me" and the thunder rolled across the sky. But the man did not listen. The man looked around and said, "God let me see you" and a star shined brightly. But the man did not notice. And the man shouted, "God show me a miracle" and a life was born. But the man did not know. So the man cried out in despair, "Touch me God, and let me know you are there" Whereupon God reached down and touched the man. But the man brushed the butterfly away and walked on.
