Balzac ~ Heaven or Hell?
Donald Trump passes.
His soul arrives in heaven and he is met by St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.
"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem: We seldom see a Republican around these parts, so we're not sure what to do with you."
"No problem, just let me in; I'm a believer," says Trump, "did you see that picture of me holding a bible?"
"I'd like to let you in, but have orders from the Man Himself: He says you have to spend one day in hell and one day in heaven. Then you must choose where you'll live for eternity."
"But, I've already made up my mind; I want to be in heaven."
"I'm sorry, but we have our rules." And with that, St. Peter escorts him to an elevator and he goes down, down, down, all the way to hell.
The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a lush golf course; the sun is shining in a cloudless sky, the temperature a perfect 72 degrees.
In the distance is a beautiful clubhouse. Standing in front of it his dad and thousands of other Republicans who had helped him out over the years: along with Michael Cohen, Michael Flynn, Rick Gates, Paul Manafort, George Papadopoullos, Roger Stone, Mike "Fake Christian" Pence, Richard "I am not a crook" Nixon, Ronald "I created the homeless" Reagan, and the entire "Jr. talks with God" Bush family.
The whole of the "Right" is here, everyone laughing, happy; casually, but expensively dressed.
They run to greet him, hug him, and reminisce about the good times they had getting rich at expense of the "suckers and peasants." They play a friendly game of golf, then dine on lobster and caviar.
The devil himself comes up to Donald with a beautiful golden scepter and says, “Relax Donnie, ...this scepter belonged to Julius Caesar and I want you to have it!"
"This is Hell, son: you can drink, eat all you want, do whatever / whomever you like and not have to worry, plus, it just gets better from here!" says the devil.
Trump takes the scepter and finds himself liking the devil, who is a very friendly guy that tells funny jokes and pulls hilarious nasty pranks, kind of like the relationship he had with his own family, except for having real horns.
They are having such a great time that, before he realizes it, it's time to go. Everyone gives him a big hug and waves as Trump steps on the elevator and heads upward.
When the elevator door reopens, he is in heaven again and St. Peter is waiting for him. "Now it's time to visit heaven," the old man says, opening the gate.
So for 24 hours Trump is made to hang out with a bunch of honest, good-natured people who enjoy each other's company, talk about things other than money, and treat each other decently.
Not a nasty prank or billionaire’s joke among them; no fancy country clubs and while the food tastes great, it's not caviar or lobster. These people are all poor; he doesn't see anybody he knows, and he isn't treated like someone special!
Worst of all, to Trump, Jesus turns out to be some kind of Jewish hippie with his endless 'peace' and 'do unto others' jive.
"Whoa," he says uncomfortably to himself, "Jerry Falwell, Jr. never prepared me for this! Guess he was too preoccupied watching the pool boy bang his wife?”
The day done, St. Peter returns and says, "Well, then, you've spent a day in Hell and a day in Heaven. Now choose where you want to live for eternity."
With the 'Jeopardy' TV theme playing softly in the background, Trump reflects for a minute, then answers, "Well, I would never have thought I'd say this -- I mean, heaven has been delightful and all -- but I really think I belong in hell with my friends."
So Saint Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down, all the way to hell.
The doors of the elevator open, and he finds himself in the middle of barren, scorched earth covered with garbage and toxic industrial waste …kind of like Houston?
He is horrified to see all of his friends dressed in rags and chained together, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags.
They are groaning and moaning in pain, faces and hands black with grime. The Devil comes over to Trump and puts an arm around his shoulder.
"I don't understand," stammers a shocked Trump. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and a clubhouse and we ate lobster and caviar and drank booze. We screwed around and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and everybody looks miserable!"
The Devil looks at him, smiles slyly, and purrs,
"Yesterday we were campaigning; today you voted for us."

I remember 2036 very clearly. It is difficult to describe 2036 in detail without spending a great deal of time explaining why things are so different.
In 2036, I live in central Florida with my family and I'm currently stationed at an Army base in Tampa. A world war in 2015 killed nearly three billion people. The people that survived grew closer together. Life is centered on the family and then the community. I cannot imagine living even a few hundred miles away from my parents.
There is no large industrial complex creating masses of useless food and recreational items. Food and livestock is grown and sold locally. People spend much more time reading and talking together face to face. Religion is taken seriously and everyone can multiply and divide in their heads.
Life has changed so much over my lifetime that it's hard to pin down a "normal" day. When I was 13, I was a soldier. As a teenager, I helped my dad haul cargo. I went to college when I was 31 and I was recruited to "time travel" shortly after that. Again, I suppose an average day in 2036 is like an average day on the farm.
There is a civil war in the United States that starts in 2005. That conflict flares up and down for 10 years. In 2015, Russia launches a nuclear strike against the major cities in the United States (which is the "other side" of the civil war from my perspective), China and Europe. The United States counter attacks. The US cities are destroyed along with the AFE (American Federal Empire)...thus we (in the country) won. The European Union and China were also destroyed. Russia is now our largest trading partner and the Capitol of the US was moved to Omaha Nebraska.
One of the biggest reasons why food production is localized is because the environment is affected with disease and radiation. We are making huge strides in getting it cleaned up. Water is produced on a community level and we do eat meat that we raise ourselves.
After the war, early new communities gathered around the current Universities. That's where the libraries were. I went to school at Fort UF, which is now called the University of Florida. Not too much is different except the military is large part of people's life and we spend a great deal of time in the fields and farms at the "University" or Fort.
The Constitution was changed after the war. We have 5 presidents that are voted in and out on different term periods. Tarring and feathering is a form of public humiliation and punishment used to enforce unofficial justice or revenge. It was used in feudal Europe and its colonies in the early modern period, as well as the early American frontier, mostly as a type of mob vengeance.

At 9am (EDT) we go way back before there was a Clifford’s Corner to a program co-hosted with Wilmington jazz raconteur Maurice Sims with our guest Bob Cordrey. Bob was a local jazz musician who had a combo in Wilmington in the late 1940s consisting of himself, Ralph Morris, and Preston Johnson. Not only will we talk about and play a couple of his old recordings, but we'll hear an eyewitness account of the jazz scene and many of the jazz performers during Wilmington’s post war jazz heyday. ~ Steve

The Sacred Clowns ~ Heyókȟa
The Heyókȟa symbolize and portray many aspects of the sacred, the Wakȟáŋ. Their satire presents important questions by fooling around. They ask difficult questions, and say things others are too afraid to say. By reading between the lines, the audience is able to think about things not usually thought about, or to look at things in a different way.
Principally, the Heyókȟa functions both as a mirror and a teacher, using extreme behaviors to mirror others, thereby forcing them to examine their own doubts, fears, hatreds, and weaknesses. Heyókȟas also have the power to heal emotional pain; such power comes from the experience of shame--they sing of shameful events in their lives, beg for food, and live as clowns. They provoke laughter in distressing situations of despair and provoke fear and chaos when people feel complacent and overly secure, to keep them from taking themselves too seriously or believing they are more powerful than they are.
In addition, sacred clowns serve an important role in shaping tribal codes. Heyókȟa's don't seem to care about taboos, rules, regulations, social norms, or boundaries. Paradoxically, however, it is by violating these norms and taboos that they help to define the accepted boundaries, rules, and societal guidelines for ethical and moral behavior. This is because they are the only ones who can ask "Why?" about sensitive topics and employ satire to question the specialists and carriers of sacred knowledge or those in positions of power and authority. In doing so, they demonstrate concretely the theories of balance and imbalance. Their role is to penetrate deception, turn over rocks, and create a deeper awareness.
