How "Autumn Fenders" came to be: Many years ago, I was in the Navy, stationed at Okinawa, Japan. Near the end of my enlistment I had been out drinking and got to the barracks very late. I did not have to be on duty that morning and was sleeping in. Somehow, somewhere, in my drowsy alcohol-induced state of confusion, I heard the words "autumn fenders" That may not be what any one person said, but it was what I heard, and it stuck with me. "Autumn fenders" does not make any sense, it does not have any meaning, but it has been my standby phrase for nonsense, gibberish and confusion ever since. |
